The main reason why people read these materials is for fun. However, there are many "applied" uses for these pages:
  • learn why you need to memorize only 13 multiplication facts (or less) in order to know the whole table learn a lot of useful tricks and patterns that will help in fast mental arithmetic and will develop your number sense follow suggested investigations to discover a lot of algebraic patterns (it is worth at least as much as taking the standard pre-algebra and algebra 1 courses) find getaways to advanced topics such as matrices or arithmetic progression
Each page in the unit consists of dialogs between a Student and a Mentor, as well as illustrations, summaries and suggestions for further explorations and activities. Users can skip dialogs if they wish, going directly for the summaries and activities.

Multiply Up to 20X20 In Your Head
In just FIVE minutes you should learn to quickly multiply up to 20x20 in your head.
With this trick, you will be able to multiply any two numbers from 11 to 19 in your head quickly, without the use of a calculator. I will assume that you know your multiplication table reasonably well up to 10x10. Try this:
  • Take 15 x 13 for an example.
  • Always place the larger number of the two on top in your mind.
  • Then draw the shape of Africa mentally so it covers the 15 and the 3 from the 13 below. Those covered numbers are all you need.
  • First add 15 + 3 = 18
  • Add a zero behind it (multiply by 10) to get 180.
  • Multiply the covered lower 3 x the single digit above it the "5" (3x5= 15)
  • Add 180 + 15 = 195.
That is It! Wasn't that easy? Practice it on paper first!

explore the
multiplication table! (Look below for more multiplication activities at Math Cats!) Click a number on the left, then a number on the top, then the = sign. You will see the problem as a rectangle. You'll also see numbers appear along the right side and the bottom.
Click the C in the bottom left corner to change the color. (This applet was created by Edward Kluk of Dickinson State U. , reposted with permission.) More multiplication activities at Math Cats: Multiplication Fact Family Cards Each card has three numbers on it. The number at the bottom is the product of the two numbers above it. These three numbers are a fact family. This card shows four related facts: 3 x 5 = 15
5 x 3 = 15
After you print and cut out the cards, be sure to try the suggested games and activities! Multiply It Watch the grid change size and shape as you drag the sliders to make new multiplication facts. The product slider always shows the total. (This project requires the free MW Web Player plug-in. Click the picture for more info and a link to the plug-in.) Multiplication Rods This project uses online "Cuisenaire rods" to illustrate multiplication problems. Click the blue triangles to change the numbers, then click "Multiply!" and watch as the problem is set up in the form of a rectangle.
