Wit and Wisdom of A K Snyder
In early summer 1981, Professor A K Snyder http://www.lehigh.edu/~math/rogues.html and his assistant Deb Frantz ran a Junior Research Seminar in Mathematics sponsored by the National Science Foundation at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, for local high school students who would be seniors in September. On Math A Mathematician is a machine for turning coffee into theorems.
- Paul Erdos I mean the word proof not in the sense of the lawyers, who set two half proofs equal to a whole one, but in the sense of a mathematician, where half proof = 0, and it is demanded for proof that every doubt becomes impossible.
- Karl Friedrich Gauss Mathematics is a language.
- Josiah Willard Gibbs God not only plays dice. He also sometimes throws the dice where they cannot be seen.
Stephen Hawking Perhaps the greatest paradox of all is that there are paradoxes in mathematics.
E. Kasner and J. Newman The chief aim of all investigations of the external world should be to discover the rational order and harmony which has been imposed on it by God and which He revealed to us in the language of mathematics.
- Johannes Kepler In my opinion, a mathematician, in so far as he is a mathematician, need not preoccupy himself with philosophy an opinion, moreover, which has been expressed by many philosophers.
- Henri Lebesgue There is no branch of mathematics, however abstract, which may not some day be applied to the phenomena of the real world.

    Past Featured Quotes
From Douglas Carnine, professor of education at the University of Oregon before the California Mathematics Subject Matter Committee, April 28, 1998: "Whenever two children talk to each other, they are engaging in cooperative learning." From a column in The San Francisco Chronicle by Debra J. Saunders , November 25, 1997: Modern Americans have elevated achieving personal comfort to an art form. Life is so easy that standing up for an ideal is something only quacks do. In an age when eating in all week is considered a hardship, I sometimes think such giants could not be found today. But then I think of Marion Joseph, Mike McKeown, Bill Evers, Leah Vukmir and Monica Brown. From an editorial in The Stars and Stripes by Denise McArthur, July 31, 1997: Two years ago DoDDS [Department of Defense Dependents Schools] implemented the new-new math programs, MathLand in elementary school, and Interactive Mathematics in Jr. high. The first year of implementation was a complete disaster for most students, as evidenced by the dismal performance on the CTBS tests. Computation scores dropped significantly, (e.g., -23%, -19%, -15%) and gains in Concepts and Applications appear negligible (e.g., +2%, +3%) particularly when there were areas of significant decline (e.g., -10%, -11%, -8%). .... According to the 1994 Public Agenda poll, 96% of Americans want tougher and more challenging courses in the basics. And what did we get? MathLand.

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly as necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.

Philosophy [the universe] is written in that great book which ever lies before our eyes. We cannot understand it if we do not first learn the language and grasp the symbols in which it is written. The book is written in the mathematical language ... without whose help it is humanly impossible to comprehend a single word of it, and without which one wanders in vain through a dark labyrinth. ~ Galileo Galilei ~ The laws of Nature are written in the language of mathematics, the symbols are triangles, circles and other geometrical figures, without whose help it is impossible to comprehend a single word. ~ Michael Kline, Mathematical thought from ancient to modern times The shape of things to come, is written in the geometry of creation. It is staring you right in the face. ~ Thoth ~ Click Numbers Mathematics is the queen of the sciences and number theory is the queen of mathematics. I am coming more and more to the conviction that the necessity of our geometry cannot be demonstrated, at least neither by, nor for, the human intellect. Geometry should be ranked, not with arithmetic, which is purely aprioristic, but with mechanics. ~ Carl Friedrich Gauss ~ Clouds are not spheres

    Stock Market Math
U.S. stock markets soared Monday, April 17, 2000, as investors jumped into the bargain bin to snap up technology stocks, which were cheapened after a major sell-off the previous week. The Nasdaq jumped 217.87 points to 3,539.16. That's up more than 6 percent, but still more than 29 percent below its March 10 highs, sitting deeply in what is known on Wall Street as bear territory. While investors go to work capitalizing on recovering prices — many trying to recoup big losses — you will be putting your math skills to work as you try to make sense out of all the charts and numbers.
    Fractions and Decimals
Stock quotes are dollar amounts for a single share of the stock. If a stock is currently trading for 19, you can buy one share of the stock for $19 plus the commission on the transaction. Simple math tells you that 100 shares equals $1,900. But stock quotes are often expressed in fractions of a dollar — as small as 1/16 (sometimes called one teenie). How much is 1/16 of one dollar? How much is 5/16? To find the decimal value of 1/16, divide $1.00 by 16. Multiply by 5 to find the decimal value of 5/16. This presents a bit of a problem for securities brokers and investors. Dollar amounts are usually rounded to the nearest hundredth (cents). To accurately figure sixteenths of a dollar, they need to extend the decimal two more places to a quarter of a cent or 0.0025. That's not much of a difference for one share, but it really adds up when you're buying 100,000 shares.
