LEGO Puzzles
My set of LEGO Pentominoes was just the beginning. This page exhibits more brain-teasing mechanical puzzles all built out of LEGO bricks. Most of the puzzles were inspired by classic puzzles that have been available in the past, but I had never seen them built out of LEGO pieces. So, if you are intrigued by such things, read on (and if you would like me to build a particular puzzle for you, rest assured that while they are not cheap, they are considerably less expensive than, say, a White Rabbit Mosaic . I will add more puzzles to this page as I create them.
Checkered Pentominoes
Another version of the basic Pentominoes, this set is checkered; the pieces are built of alternating cubes of black and white. Since there are 12 pentominoes each consisting of 5 squares, a total of 60 squares are occupied. I constructed a blue edged tray of dimension 8-by-8 squares (not 8x8 LEGO studs - each 'square' is a 2x2 LEGO stud size), and in the middle of the tray I built a 2x2 square to fill in the remaining 4 squares (since an 8x8 tray is 64 squares, four more than the pentominoes will fill). The task, of course, is to place all of the pentominoes into the tray. Furthermore, when completed, a perfect checkboard pattern should result.

Developing Geometry Understandings and Spatial Skills through Puzzlelike Problems with Tangrams: Tangram Puzzles
Tangram Puzzles
Tangram Challenges

Describing figures and visualizing what they look like when they are transformed through rotations or flips or are put together or taken apart in different ways are important aspects of geometry in the lower grades. This two-part tangram example demonstrates the potential for high-quality experiences provided by computer "shape" environments for students as they learn concepts described in the Geometry Standard Problem-solving tasks that involve physical manipulatives as well as virtual manipulatives afford many students an entry into mathematics that they might not otherwise experience. In this part, Tangram Puzzles, students can choose a picture and use all seven pieces to fill in the outline. In the second part, Tangram Challenges, students can use tangram pieces to form given polygons.
Task
Choose a picture and use all seven pieces to fill in the outline. Use the "Hint" button if you need help.
