The rec.puzzles archive
This is the index of the rec.puzzles archive, taken from archive-request@questrel.com. You can browse through the puzzles, and click on the Solution link to see the solution of the puzzle. If you're e-mailing about a particular puzzle or solution, please mention at least the puzzle's name as it appears in the page. If the puzzle is not too long, please copy and paste the question and the solution, this makes it a lot easier for me to know what you're talking about. E-mail without a subject that says: "I think your solution is wrong, the man must be born on a wednesday" will usually be ignored. Also, please send your e-mail as plain text, not HTML or proprietary formats.

Note to "james": We already have a contestant named "james" with a different
password. Come back under a different name! - Remi On this page you will find a collection of problems in math and logic. You can solve these problems and compete with other visitors to The Truth Tree. Each problem has a point value. Your score will be the sum of all the point values of the problems you have solved correctly less a penalty for wrong answers. You may try repeatedly to get the right answer, but each time you miss a problem a point is deducted from your score. The first thing to do to participate on this Board is to sign in. You don't have to use your real name, but if you want your score to build up you will have to use the same name and password every time you log in. You must also enter a password so that your answers will be credited only to your name. Without the password, some practical joker could enter a lot of wrong answers under your name, thus decreasing your score. There are two scoreboards. The first one lists the contestants in order of their scores with the top scoring contestants listed first. This one can be found at

Math Magic is a web site devoted to original mathematical recreations. If you have a math puzzle, discovery, or observation, please e-mail me about it. You can also send answers to the problem of the month.
Problem of the Month Archive
Problem of the Month (June 2004)
This month we investigate the question "What is the smallest rectangle with aspect ratio r that contains n congruent rectangles with aspect ratio r?" In other words, for positive integers n, and r 1, we define m n (r) to be the minimum value of m so that an m x mr rectangle contains n non-overlapping non-tilted 1 x r rectangles. Clearly if n is a perfect square, then m n (r) = n with no wasted space. What are the values of m n (r) for non-square values of n? For example, there are 3 cases for m (r): r r r m (r) = 2 m (r) = r m (r) = 2 / r A much harder question is to find M n (r) , the smallest value of m so that so that an m x mr rectangle contains n non-overlapping 1 x r rectangles that might be tilted. For example, when r > 1.9762, M (r) < m (r): What are the values of M n (r) for small values of n?

Two Trains
Trains travel from Foodletown to Myerville all day, always on the same track, always going nonstop and at the same speed. The noon train took 80 minutes to complete the trip, but the 4 PM train took an hour and 20 minutes. Why?
Answer
There is a cask of wine, and a larger barrel of water. I take a dipper of wine and add it to the water. Then I take a dipper of the water/wine mixture and pour it back into the wine barrel. Is there now more wine in the water, or more water in the wine? Answer Flags The great square fortress Fua stands on the level Dal Mahir plain where the straight east-west and north-south roads meet. Along the tops of the outer fortress walls there are flags on short flagpoles, such that a traveler approaching the fortress from any direction sees 3 flags. (It is not possible to see a flag which is not on a wall that you are facing directly.) How many flags are there altogether? You should give the smallest number possible.
