Maryland Delmar United Kingdom Australia ... Botswana My fourth graders have written some word (math) puzzles for you and hope you will compute the answers and then send us some. Take a look at the word puzzles that are here. Be sure to write a number sentence for each puzzle like this: My number is the days in a week minus the eyes on my face times the months in a year. 7 - 2 x 12 = 60 It would be very interesting if we added a cultural dimension to our project like this: The number of letters in the word "computer" times the points on David's Star minus the number of pennies in a dime equals what number? This sends us to some research on David's Star as well as doing a little math. You might have to search to find out how many pennies there are in a US dime. This is just one example. I am sure there are other things in your culture that have numbers. This can be a fun project. Here are some starter puzzles for you: From Ms. Everhart's class in Maryland 1. There are reptiles in the Woodside Wetlands. Edwin, Alan, and James want to know how to divide the reptiles evenly so each one gets an equal number. They had counted 462 reptiles. How many reptiles will each boy get?

Raymond Smullyan, a Mathematician, Philosopher and author of several outstanding books of logical puzzles, tells, in one of his books, a revealing story. A friend invited him for dinner. He told Smullyan that his teenage son was crazy about Smullyan's books and could not wait to meet him. The friend warned Smullyan not to mention that he is a Mathematician and that Logic is a part of Mathematics because the young fellow hated Mathematics.
Having told this story, would it be wise to announce up front what this site is about? Perhaps against a better judgement, I've put together a manifesto that aims to explain the purpose of this site.

Fun and Challenging Math Problems for the Young, and Young At Heart
These problems are aimed at junior high and high school students with a flare for mathematics and logic. These are "real world" problems, rather than abstract riddles about sets or trigonometry etc. The questions should be accessible to a wide audience, even if the answers are not. When you find a question that interests you, it's tempting to just read the answer at the end of this web page, but please don't - that would spoil the fun. Instead, think about the problem in your spare time for a few days. Talk about it with your friends. Then, if you're really not getting anywhere, or you think you've got the answer, come back and read the answer. Educators might want to present the problem on Monday and talk about it on Friday.
  • A school has 1,000 students and 1,000 lockers, all in a row. They all start out closed. The first student walks down the line and opens each one. The second student closes the even numbered lockers. The third student approaches every third locker and changes its state. If it was open he closes it; if it was closed he opens it. The fourth student does the same to every fourth locker, and so on through 1,000 students. To illustrate, the tenth locker is opened by the first student, closed by the second, reopened by the fifth, and then closed by the tenth. All the other students pass by the tenth locker, so it winds up being closed. How many lockers are open?
  • A checkerboard is missing two of its squares. The lower left square and the upper right square are gone. That leaves 62 squares on the board. You are given 31 dominoes. Each domino is a rectangle that can cover exactly two squares on the checkerboard. Can you place all 31 dominoes on the checkerboard, so that all 62 squares are covered?

Daryl Cooper South Hall 6522 UCSB
The puzzles below vary in difficulty, generally later ones are harder. Almost all of them I have heard from other people. They are purely for amusement. I do not give out answers. I am always on the lookout for new puzzles. They should be unusual. Most routine puzzles are of no interest to me. [1] An ant starts at one end of a rubber band and walks along it at a speed of 1 inch per second. The rubber band is 10 inches long, and is being stretched uniformly at a rate of 20 inches per second. Does the ant ever reach the other end of the rubber band?. Give reasons. [2] Can you subdivide a cube into finitely many smaller cubes no two of which have the same size? [3] What is the maximum number of knights that you can place on a chess board so that no knight threatens (ie can jump onto) any other knight? Can you show your answer is the best possible? [4] Suppose I take a chess board, and remove two squares from opposite corners (ie the corners are on the same DIAGONAL) Is it possible to cover the remaining squares using dominoes, where each domino covers two adjacent squares? [5] There are 12 balls, identical in appearance. One of the balls is either heavier or lighter than the others. If I give you a balance and allow you to make 3 weighings, how could you arrange to discover which ball is the odd one out, and whether it is heavier or lighter than the others? [using a balance, you can weigh balls on one side against balls on the other side]

Puzzles provide a fun way for students to acquire and practice math skills such as problem solving, logic, recognizing patterns, and number sense. Here are a few ideas in celebration of puzzles:
    • Bring in a variety of puzzles, including math puzzles, puzzles that ask players to call on their knowledge of history or science or another area, and word puzzles. With the class, analyze the math and critical thinking skills needed to solve them, and discuss how these skills are applied in daily life.
    • Ask students to choose a favorite puzzle and write a description of the puzzle and a strategy for solving it.
