Java
Finding the area under a curve
The applet below computes the area of a figure made of rectangles which approximates the region under the given curve. This curve is the graph of a polynomial of degree three or less. The coefficients are listed in the boxes just above the graph. In the start-up exampel they are 0, 1, 0, 0, correspoding to the graph y = x a parabola. Sorry, your browser needs Java to display this applet.
Notes
Use the button "+" to increase the number of rectangles in the approximating figure, hence to increase its accuracy. As the number of rectangles increases, the' area of the figure gets closer and closer to the area under the curve. Thus the area under the curve is limit value of these approximations: limit( A n ) = A where A n is the are of the approximating figure and A is the area of the given figure. Question: What is the area under the parabola?

    Welcome!
The goal of this project is to provide free, high quality, interactive, web-based resources for students and teachers of probability and statistics. Basically, our project consists of an integrated set of components that includes expository text, applets, data sets, biographical sketches, an object library, and other elements. Please read the introduction for more information about the content, structure, mathematical prerequisites. and organization of the project. Please bookmark this site ; we hope you will visit frequently. Please also let us hear from you. Use the feedback form to send suggestions, bug reports, or other comments. Thank you!
    Technologies and Browser Requirements
This site uses a number of advanced technologies, including the Mathematics Markup Language (MathML), for portable and notationally correct mathematical expressions, and the Java 2 Runtime Environment for the applets. To use this site, you will need one of the following browser configurations (the first one is best):

    Interactive Math Programs
These programs are designed to be used with Multivariable Mathematics by R.E. Williamson and H.F. Trotter, and Introduction to Differential Equation s by Richard E. Williamson, but are quite generally useful for illustrating concepts in the areas covered by the texts. So have fun, experiment with different values, and let us know if you have any trouble. These programs were originally written in True Basic for the Macintosh by Richard Williamson. The translation into Java and the writing of a recursive descent equation parser was done by Scott Rankin and Susan Schwarz.
To run one of the programs in the list below, just click on its name. Each program displays a brief explanation of how to use it. If you run into difficulties, here are more detailed instructions on running the applets. The first time you try any of the programs you may want to look at the link anyway. If you do not see the buttons that are used to run the program, you may need to scroll down in the browser window until the buttons are visible.

Using the enclosed Java applet, explore graphically the effect of transforming the given graph with translations, vertical and horizontal stretchings and reflections. Visualization: This exploration is about using one of five transformations to construct new functions from a given function. We start with the blue graph which is the graph of some function ( Why? ) and which is contained in the other window which was created when you pressed the View Java Applet button. You can manipulate this graph in the five ways which are listed in the box beneath the graph. For more information on these manipulations, click on one of the following items:

A Simulation of the Java Virtual Machine
The Eternal Math applet, included below, simulates a Java virtual machine executing a few bytecode instructions. This applet accompanies Chapter 5, "The Java Virtual Machine, " of Inside the Java 2 Virtual Machine For some reason, your browser won't let you view this way cool Java applet. The instructions in the simulation were generated by the javac compiler given the following code: Here are the bytecodes generated by javac for class Act The instructions in the simulation represent the body of the method of class Act , shown above. This simulation shows the local variables and operand stack of the current frame, the pc register, and the bytecodes in the method area. It also shows an optop register, which you can think of as part of the frame data of this particular implementation of the Java virtual machine. The optop register always points to one word beyond the top of the operand stack. The applet has four buttons: Step, Reset, Run, and Stop. Each time you press the Step button, the Java virtual machine simulator will execute the instruction pointed to by the pc register. Initially, the pc register points to an instruction. The first time you press the Step button, therefore, the virtual machine will execute
