Academic competitions provide an opportunity for students to compete in fields other than athletics. However, unlike athletic competitions, information about these competitions can be difficult to find. Just like sports, participating in these competitions can result in experience, accolades, and sometimes scholarships. This site was created in an attempt to make this information more readily available and provide resources that have been restricted, hard to find, or just too time intensive to produce. You will find tips, tricks, and various resources on this site, along with a fairly comprehensive list of competitions. I am also planning on adding practice sheets to the site that can be printed.

2002 Results
Last year's William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition was held on Saturday, December 7, 2002. This is the premier national mathematical competition for undergraduate students, a very challenging written examination given on campus in two 3-hour sessions. This year 3349 students from 476 colleges in Canada and the United States competed. The UMCP team finished 28th overall, our 5th straight year in the top 30. Individually, Marshall Williams achieved Honorable Mention, finishing among the top 70 competitors. Congratulations also to Andrew Snowden and Michael Hall, who finished in the top 200, and to Mikey Thompson, who finished in the top 500 for the 3rd year in a row. For more information on the competition (history, past examinations, etc.), see the links below.

The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 80 countries from 5 continents. The IMO Advisory Board ensures that the competition takes place each year and that each host country observes the regulations and traditions of the IMO. The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge
sponsored by the CMS in collaboration with the CENTRE for EDUCATION in MATHEMATICS and COMPUTING (CEMC) It is with pleasure that we announce the annual Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge and extend to you an invitation to enter the students in your school. The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge is designed for two reasons:
  • To provide an extracurricular mathematics activity during the fall term. It will be attractive to senior level students, and to motivated younger students who have done some enrichment study beyond their school year, and particularly to those enrolled in fall semester courses who are looking for a mathematics enrichment challenge.
  • To act as a qualifying paper for the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad. Invitations to write the The Canadian Mathematical Olympiad are based on the performance in the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge. It should be stressed that while the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge is a required step in qualifying to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad, it is not designed with this as its only goal. Many of the problems posed are well within the reach of any good student.

SUMMING UP ACHIEVEMENT: Teens plus a math competition equal a fascinating story
March 28, 2004 BY MARTA SALIJ
FREE PRESS BOOKS WRITER If six teenagers have each spent 10 years studying mathematics at a level some math profs can only dream of, and they then try to solve six fiendishly clever math problems over two days, and two of them earn perfect scores, what percentage of them can be considered to be winners? 'Count Down' FOUR STARS
out of 4 stars By Steve Olson Houghton-Mifflin, 256 pages Why, 100 percent, of course, as science writer Steve Olson proves in his highly readable and thought-provoking account of the 2001 International Mathematical Olympiad, "Count Down: Six Kids Vie for Glory at the World's Toughest Math Competition." A math competition? That makes for a good book? Oh math-phobe, trust me, it does, because "Count Down" is only partly about math. It's mostly about motivation, talent and creativity and how they come together to make six unusual kids tick. You could learn something. Even a little math.

    Math competition a field day
Although it is not scored as a team competition, Fruitvale Junior High distinguished itself with nine category finalists and Murray Middle School of Ridgecrest was a close second with eight among approximately 800 students from 33 schools who competed at the 34th annual Kern County Middle School Mathematics Field Day held at Ridgeview High School in Bakersfield on May 15. The competition, sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, Westchester Kiwanis Club, Bakersfield Math Council, California Math Council, Kern County Science Foundation and Ridgeview High, is a fun day of problem solving games and competitions. Some have playful names such as “leap frog” and “mad hatter.” Still others offer the flavor of athletic competition with names such as “power relay,” “circuit training,” “individual medley” and “triathlon games.” Sixth, seventh, eighth-graders or those in an algebra class for which they will receive high school credit compete in the series of written events testing their math skills individually and in teams of two, three, four and five by grade level.

    About the Competition
    Description of the Competition
High school mathematics competitions are sponsored by the Math Department at Anne Arundel Community College. Students have the opportunity to work on math problems individually and with a team from their high school. During the individual competition, the student works on six problems which encourages him/her to use a wide variety of math skills and knowledge. During the team competition, teams comprised of up to five students, all from the same high school, work on six problems which challenge them to use their extensive math knowledge. Students who earn a perfect score on the individual competition receive certificates. The top scoring team receives a certificate and traveling plaque and second and third place receive certificates. At the end of the year, the top three schools receive trophies.

Well, you are not the onely one out there. I, too, spend my evenings around math problems. You may say that it is geeky, but think of it twice. It may sound geeky now, but later in life you will need it a lot. So, never concider math to sound geeky. Well, wish you the best of luck in your competitions. :) Title Name Url Comments
