Pros and Cons of Math Competitions
by Richard Rusczyk Mathematics competitions such as MATHCOUNTS and the American Mathematics Competitions Beyond encouraging an interest in mathematics, contests help prepare students for competition. For better or worse, much of life is competition , be it for jobs or resources or whatever. Competition of any sort trains students to deal with success and failure, and teaches them that effective performance requires practice. Moreover, nearly every interesting and worthwhile venture in life comes with some element of pressure; competition teaches students how to handle it. Despite all the benefits of math contests, they are not an unmitigated good. First of all, not all contests are designed well calculus the ability to think about and solve complex problems A third potential pitfall, burnout, often comes on the heels of the first two.

I was the coach of the Good Counsel H.S. Math Team in 1998-99, and gathered a little information on math competitions for high school students that might be of general interest to math coaches. Nationwide High School Math Competitions: In 2000, the contest formerly known as the American High School Math Exam (AHSME), sponsored by American Math Competitions The Math League sponsors a math contest for high school students. Registration is required by the end of September. I haven’t dealt with it, but my information says it consists of “a set of six 30-minute, 6 question short-answer contests.” There is a fee of $65 for 6 contests. I learned about the Colorado Math Olympiad after leaving Good Counsel and so haven’t dealt with it. From the webpage it looks like an interesting contest, and is open to students from all over. It’s held at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in April, so there is the transportation issue. Illinois and Chicago High School Math Competitions: The Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) The Math Teachers Association (MTA) sponsors a math competition for Chicago-area Catholic high schools. The school becomes eligible by joining the MTA; dues are about $30. The competition is held at Loyola University in Rogers Park. The contest takes place in February.

Count Down: Six Kids Vie for Glory at the World's Toughest Math Competition Olson, who lives in Bethesda, writes about what math talent really looks like in The book, out next month, follows the US team competing in the 42nd International Mathematical Olympiad. Besides being gifted problem-solvers, these teenagers are athletes, musicians, writers. They have fun, and they have friends. The book is more about personality and human nature than about numbers and formulas. Olson uses each of the six Americans as a window into one of the attributes he deems necessary for success: insight, competitiveness, talent, creativity, breadth, and a sense of wonder. 6th Annual Mental Math Competition
Every Child Can Learn
Featured in the Author Spotlight this month, is Willie Walker, President of Project Motivational Math. Twenty three years ago when walker left the banking industry to begin a career in education, he had no idea of the challenges he would face — and conquer — in the classrooms of Miami-Dade County, Florida. That first year it became apparent that the traditional way of teaching wasn't getting his students excited about learning math. In response, Willie began incorporating memorization and number crunches from a business standpoint into his lesson plans. The result? Walker's students blossomed; his students developed a positive attitude about a subject that ordinarily intimidates, and once past that hurdle, they began to think critically in ways
that spilled over into all other areas of study.
