Power in Math and Science: Advice for Parents
If you shy away from math and science activities with your children because you're afraid you don't know much about them, read on. There's lots you can do to encourage your children's interest in these areas, and you don't have to be a statistician or microbiologist to do it! In fact, it's better if you don't give them knowledge by telling them answers; instead, nurture their love for these subjects by watching and learning right along with them. Some home learning tools that teach about math and science:
  • building blocks and construction sets magnets ant farms scales magnifying glasses flower and vegetable seeds calculators flower press bird feeders microscopes and telescopes Bake a cake together and observe/talk about how the mixtures change from powders to liquid to solid.

At some point when I have time, I'll probably rewrite this whole page using latex2html, since that seems to be the only format that presently works with all major browsers. Tools for Creating the Life YOU Want! Math that Really Matters by Marc Eisenson Say you want to buy a brand new $18,000 car, and you've done battle to "win" a 10% price reduction, which would bring it down to $16,200. You decide it pays to pocket a $1,000 rebate from the manufacturer. So that $18,000 buggy would cost you $15,200. Right? Wrong! Let's assume you finance 90% ($13,680) at 7.5% for 3 years. That'll add $1,639 in interest to the $15,200, for a total cost of $16,839. Right? Wrong! Even if you disregard your new car's sales tax, registration, and insurance (which will add up to way more than pocket change) there's still income tax to factor in. If you're in the 28% tax bracket, you'd need to gross over $23,000 to pay for this horseless carriage. That's over 50% higher than the $15,200 rock bottom price you negotiated, and the equivalent of almost 9 months of hard labor for someone earning $30,000 a year. And that's without adding in the cost of state and local taxes, to say nothing of Social Security. Do you really want to spend the better part of a year working, not for food, clothing, or shelter, but just to pay for the privilege of parking that car in your driveway?

Many majors and pre-professional curricula require calculus. Several Mathematics courses fulfill the School of Arts and Sciences Formal Reasoning and Analysis Requirement. Thus, most Penn undergraduates take some Mathematics courses.
First-year courses:
There are a number of available alternatives among the first-year courses. Math 104, Calculus, Part I , the first calculus course, assumes that students have had the equivalent of AB Calculus in high school, and are familiar with calculus concepts through applications of differentiation and basic integration techniques. Students who have not had AB Calculus or if they have had insufficient experience with them should take Math 103, Introduction to Calculus , which provides an introduction to Calculus. (A placement examination will be given in all Math 103 and 104 classes at the beginning of the semester to assist students with course selection.) A non-credit course Math 101, Algebra and Trigonometry, can be used as a preparation to Math 103. Math 101 is only offered through College of General Study. There are two second-semester Calculus courses. Students are advised to check their major department or their program for the specific requirement. In general

Calculus at Penn
Learning calculus has become a central skill in many scientific and professional careers, perhaps the most important skill. Whether calculus proves to be a barrier or a gateway for you depends on how well you learn it. We want you to do as well as you possibly can. It is for this reason that so much structure is provided: There is also the Penn Learning Resources Center offered by Academic Support Programs , which provides tutoring and reviews. The purpose of this document is to explain what is available.
Lectures and Recitations:
Three of your four class hours each week are spent in lecture, where the professor explains the concepts and methods of calculus. At lecture, you should try to get a sense of what is the most important for you to fully understand so that you can study efficiently. Your recitation hour will have a Teaching Assistant (TA) and a smaller group of students. In recitation, attention will focus on the solution of specific calculus problems and kinds of problems. To get the most out of recitation, it is crucial that you have seriously attempted the assigned homework in advance. The TA will try to focus on the areas where students are having difficulty; this is clearly impossible if you do not attempt the assignment ahead of time. click here to return to the Calculus at Penn menu
Office Hours
Your professor and TA have office hours which you can attend for additional, more individualized help. If you need such assistance, it is wise not to wait until the week before an exam to go to office hours for the first time, since that is when the professor and TA will be swamped with students.

Our Mission
The performance of American students in mathematics is mediocre at best. In many cases, mathematics instruction is not serving our children's best interests. In order to help all students achieve success in school mathematics courses, have access to adequate preparation for the broadest options in high school math and science courses, and the opportunity to advance into mathematics based college courses and careers, it is important to examine the direction of recent attempts at mathematics education reform. NYC HOLD (Honest Open Logical Debate on Mathematics Education Reform) was formed in order to address mathematics education in the New York City schools. We are a nonpartisan advocacy organization that provides parents, educators, mathematicians and other concerned citizens information, resources and networking opportunities to support systemic improvements in the quality of mathematics education in the New York City schools.

i'm failing math

i like this guy in my class
My parents think grades are everything. I'm getting A's in all my classes except I think I'm failing math and I'm too afraid to tell them... I think you should definitely talk to your parents about it. But before you do, you could get a tutor and then your parents would know that you want to raise your grade and that it is important to you, too. Good luck! Posted by irissiri 10:31AM EST 03/30/04 The same scenario happened to me. Ask the teacher if you can do some extra credit work to bring up your grade. It never hurts to ask. Posted by oranj_kat 10:31AM EST 03/30/04 Don't worry the exact same thing is happening to me. Just calmly sit your parents down on a non-busy night. Tell them (it'll be hard) CALMLY that you have been having trouble with math. Just tell them directly what you need help with and don't be scared. Parents understand most when you are honest and respectful. Posted by vicsdq2 10:31AM EST 03/30/04 Well girl my advice to you is do your best to try and pull it up but don't tell your parents! I told my parents that I had a "D" in one of my classes and they went crazy and put me on punishment. Don't tell them just yet unless it is already on your report card.

If you have not already done so, you might want to take a look at the free GRE Test Preparation Materials put out by gre.org) A concise overview of the Mathematics GRE Subject Test and the material it covers can be found on the ETS subject test descriptions page (Note: PhysicsGRE.com is NOT affiliated with the Educational Testing Service or the Graduate Record Examinations.) I believe that working large amounts of practice multiple-choice problems is an important part of preparing for the Physics GRE. This same mode of thinking translates directly to the Math GRE Subject Test. Below I list some sources of multiple-choice problems to help you prepare for the GRE subject test in math.
