or: I keep doing work, why do they keep yelling at me?
Lots of techies give really lousy progress reports, and are basically hell on their managers for no good reason. This is particularly bad for sysadmin types, systems programmers, and other people who love math too much. I spent several hours with a coworker last week discussing "how not to be an employee of doom," and these are my notes from that conversation. First an aside - these notes offer advice both for techies in general, who often have a pretty sucky model for the pressures on, and motivations of, their management, and advice for systems and math people in particular. Math people have two classes of problems: trivial problems, which merely need typing at, or the identification of the existing solution; and unsolved problems, which require thinking, hypothesis, and potentially experimentation. This leads them to often front-load their work, going through the list of their tasks and performing the "hard" tasks first because the others are "just work." Systems people have a strong tendency to be moderately ADD as well, because its a really useful trait in a high-interrupt environment where you need to context-switch pretty completely.

AMS e-Math Server
The American Mathematical Society has an extensive set of resources to help you looking for academic positions and is the premier source for information on careers in mathematics. This includes a list of job postings organized by country and state. In addition, you can sign up for an email service whereby you are automatically emailed all new job postings. Finally, you can submit an electronic c.v. which employers can access, and you can register for the job fairs at the annual AMS meetings. Most of these services can be found at the e-Math Employment Information and Services or can be reached indirectly from the AMS's e-Math home page
Other Online Mathematics Jobs Listings
  • SIAM News includes academic job advertisements (follow the "Professional Oppotunities" link). These tend to be more applied than the jobs listed by the AMS.
  • Chronicle of Higher Education has academic and non-academic job ads. Use the searchable index to find mathematics jobs. You do not need to subscribe to the Chronicle to search their job listings.

  • feel NERVOUS before a math test? PANIC and freeze while taking math tests? feel HELPLESS doing your homework? think that it's HOPELESS - you just don't get math, never will, so there's no sense even trying?
I read everything, now what? Nervous Nights Stomach-churning head-spinning sleepless nights can be a sign of math anxiety. Try these simple ideas to help you relax and wake up feeling in charge.
1. Study - OK, that sounds dumb. Of course you should study. Check out these study tips . But look at #2... 2. Don't study too much! Spending too much time going over and over the same stuff won't help and will just overwhelm you. 3. Calm those fears by treating yourself with calmness. Try to have a set routine - knowing that you ALWAYS eat oatmeal on test days might just help. Go to bed on time. In the morning, eat breakfast, put on your lucky sweater (really! it works!), and pack yourself a treat for lunch. Back to top Test... Brain... Freeze... Panic

The Classic "Two Trains and a Fly" problem document.write('URL: ' + document.URL + ''); Changed on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at 5:36:13 PM For another presentation, visit Dr. Math's Two Trains and a Fly Two trains, 20 miles apart, approach each other going 10 mph. A fly travels between them at 15 mph, zig-zagging just before getting smooshed by an oncoming train. Question: How far does the fly fly before meeting his ultimate demise? Here's a famous story about the physicist and mathematician John von Neumann : Another mathematician knew the quick solution to the Fly problem and wanted to see von Neumann struggle with it. He posed the question and von Neumann responded with the right answer in a few seconds. "Interesting," said the first mathematician. "Most people try to sum the infinite series." "What do you mean?" von Neumann replied. "That's how I did it." Approach #1 (the "von Neumann" way) (1) Let Df = the distance the fly travels on the first leg = 15*t where t = some time.
(2) Let Dt = the distance each train travels on the first leg = 10*t where t = the same time. Since

This is a page at the University of South Florida . This site is supported by the Department of Mathematics , which is part of the College of Arts and Sciences Taking College Courses These pages were composed and are maintained by Gregory McColm . The opinions expressed on these pages are those of Mr. McColm. Each semester I teach two courses. I have discovered that many students coming into college - or even worse, already in college - do not know how to deal with courses. I have posted a few articles about how courses work and what they are good for and all that sort of thing. They are part `how-to-get-through-college' advice and part editorial opinion. I will be posting more of this kind of stuff in the future, and also revising the postings here, so I am interested in any comments, advice, criticism, etc.: you may mail to me main page . This will simply give concise advice. Then there will be a longer explanatory essay. The newer sections - at the moment, just the homework section - there is a single introductory page (printable in less than two pages) leading to some additional pages. The postings are:

Singapore or Saxon Math? Advice...
Follow Ups Post Followup WTM Parents' Forum: Special Needs FAQ Posted by Helen in OH on February 19, 1904 at 14:35:55: I have an eight year old son who hates math. He has a short attention span. J. is easily distracted unless the topic is really interesting. J. has been reading since he is 4 years old. He is above grade level for reading but average for math. I am having him tested for ADD at the end of the month. I am trying to decide on the math program for next year. He understands the concepts of math but forgets the simplest calculations. J. cannot stay focased while doing his math. Today he finished a simple multiplication page by adding the problems instead of multiplying. I dread division problems. I am afraid that he will get lost in the middle of the page. I am trying to decide which approach would be best for a child that gets lost in Math. Saxon: no color, little stimulation, lots of review. Can order the workbook version. Singapore: Colorful, stresses understanding of a concept. The numbers just seem to spin in his head. He can't focas to write down the accurate answer. What is the best approach?
