42. Elmer Solver
After all equation solvers have been called, the outer iteration for the nonlinear problem within one time step or the steadystate problem is repeated.
http://www.csc.fi/elmer/elmersolve/fem.html
Finite element techniques of Elmer Solver
The base FEM code of Elmer Solver is a general purpose partial differential equation (PDE) solver. Elmer Solver provides the element level discretizations of the linearized PDEs. The heat equation, Navier-Stokes equations, and the advection-reaction-diffusion equation, are solved by stabilized finite element methods. The default stabilization technique is the method of Franca, Frey and Hughes [1], in which case Elmer Solver adds locally weighted squares of the governing PDEs to the energy formulation. The user can alternatively activate the so called two-level finite element stabilization, which is an approximation of the method of residual free bubbles (RFB) [2,3]. All the material parameters can be provided to the solution routines at element nodes. The parameters can depend on place, time, or on the solution it self. For anisotropic materials, the parameters may also be given as tensors instead of scalar values. Elmer Solver provides e.g. the following FEM utilities to the programmer:
  • Gauss integration points for different element types and desired integration accuracy
  • Computation of the value of a function in the nodes of a given element
  • Basis functions and their first and second derivatives with respect to global coordinate system
  • Metric tensor of the element coordinate system, and the square root of the determinant of the Jacobian of the element's coordinate mapping

Numerical Differential Equation Solvers
Tampere University of Technology After you've formed a model of a physical system, you'll want to compute the solution. Usually, the model is so large and complex that you'll want to use numerical solvers rather than attempt an ``exact'' solution. You can use the numerical solvers available in your simulation software or use algorithms available in general-purpose mathematical software packages. In either case, you will be faced with a range of choices: which method to use and what solution parameters to give it. This lesson provides some guidance to help you make the right choices. A model of the dynamics of a physical system can have many different kinds of mathematical object, including ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, algebraic equations, and difference equations (``discrete-time'' models). In this lesson, attention is restricted to models that are ordinary differential equation initial value problems. We start by giving a precise description of this mathematical problem. We then look at the general ideas behind numerical solution algorithms. We explain the difference between algorithms that are constant or variable time step, one-step or multistep, explicit or implicit, low-order or high-order.

Visualizing Magnetic Fields: Numerical Equation Solvers in Action (With CD-ROM) > Customer Review #1: Electromagnetism CAN be fun!

This book is a delight! If only it had been available during those less than interesting lectures on electromagnetic theory.......... Here, the reader can simulate almost any combination of magnets, conductors and external fields and visualize the result in a number of different ways. So this book and its accompanying software will find use in grade school, universities and industry. The visual impact of the approach used by John Beeteson should prove inspirational to younger students. I would recommend that any teacher involved in this subject should buy this book and try it out. I have used the software on a W98 notebook computer and on a powerful dual processor NT machine. It works just fine in both cases.

Plane Wave Time Domain Accelerated Integral Equation Solvers
Dr. Eric Michielssen
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Abstract: The plane wave time-domain (PWTD) algorithm permits the efficient evaluation of linear (scalar and vector) wave fields due to bandlimited transient sources. In essence, PWTD schemes constitute extensions of the frequency domain fast multipole method (Helmholtz equation) to the time domain (wave equation). PWTD algorithms already have been proven useful in the construction of fast time domain integral equation solvers and fast boundary kernels for finite difference/element grid truncation. This presentation will review the state of the art in the field, with a special focus on the development of PWTD kernels for low-frequency and lossy medium applications, the construction of hybrid accelerated time domain integral equation solvers capable of analyzing electromagnetic wave interactions with nonlinearly loaded structures, and the application of the resulting codes in the assessment of electromagnetic compatibility and interference problems.

"Fast High-Order Integral Equation Solvers for Computational Electromagnetics"
Aiming Zhu
ABSTRACT:
In my presentation, the new fast high-order integral equation solvers for computational electromagnetics will be presented. Firstly, the high-order Moment Method with point based discretization for computational electromagnetics will be introduced. The high accuracy and high-order convergence of this new high-order integral equation solver in solving thin wire problems, surface scattering, and volume scattering will be shown. The fast algorithms will be stated and combined with high-order integral equation solver to develop the new fast high-order integral equation solvers.
