Abstract
ACRONEM is an automatic finite element mesh generator that works on a general assortment of geometries. This software produces meshes with the optimum least-number of highly orthogonal hexahedron elements. The algorithm is based on a decomposition approach, where geometry is processed from a standard format of outer shell surface facets. Beginning with these facets, the element grids are generated with nodes that are coincident to external surfaces. This patented approach demonstrates that transforming the meshing operation from the Cartesian domain of space into a system of generic decompositions based on external surface connectivity can be very practical. Reducing external complex shape characteristics to a level compatible with generic geometry is interfaced with various shape recognition conditions for identifying local configurations such as: reentrant edges, multiple surface solid geometry in compacted transition regions, and various hybrid solids, such as the filletted trailing edge of a turbine blade. Due to the linearity of smooth low-order edge cross sections of medial surface boundaries, commercial feasibility of programming this algorithm is enhanced. Processing a variety of geometries with varying characteristics is dependant on the creation of peripheral shape recognition steps for reducing the complexity of external surface connectivity.

Make cylinders and cubes for seating * Here's a new twist on the old beanbag chair idea: the stuffed stool. You can use it as a seat on its own or as an ottoman to accompany an easy chair or a sofa. Our cubes and cylinders have muslin liners that make them sturdy and prevent the stuffing pellets from spilling should the fabric rip or tear. Made from cotton sateen, the bright outer covers can be removed for easy cleaning. Other materials suitable for seat covers are poplin, twill, denim, and any washable upholstery fabric. TIME: About three hours per cube COST: About $32 each, depending on fabric

Dr Neil Dodgson University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory
Constructive solid geometry (CSG) essentially consists of Boolean set operations on closed primitives in 3D space. The three CSG operations are union intersection and difference CSG is covered in FvDFH sections 12.7 and 15.10.3. The following example illustrates the three CSG operations in use on simple three dimensional primitives. The two primitives: a sphere and a box.
The union of the two primitives.
The intersection of the two primitives.
The difference of the two primitives: box minus sphere.
The following example, based on FvDFH Plate III.2, shows an object for which CSG is (probably) the only sensible modelling technique. The object rendered in the right-hand image is constructed from the primitives shown in the left-hand image. It is mostly made out of cylinders.
At right, I tried the " Godel, Escher, Bach " treatment on my initials. Unfortunately the letters N, A, and D are not as amenable to this as the letters G, E, and B: notice that the shadow of the N has a slight curve at its top right, owing to the N's intersection with the curve on the D and the slope on the A. Various other arrangements of the three letters were tried, all of which gave more noticable artefacts than this. Each of the letters is a CSG object (the D, for example, is constructed from cylinders and boxes). The final effect is produced simply by intersecting the three letters.
    Exercises
  • Work out how to represent a Lego technic brick as a CSG object. You may assume that you have box and cylinder primitives.

    1. Constructive Solid Geometry
Constructive solid geometry allows new composite objects to be formed from unions, intersections, and subtractions of primitive objects such as planes, triangles, spheres, and parallelepipeds. Representation: CSG objects come from a context-free grammar in which the primitives are atoms and the three operations are binary. This means that it can be represented as a binary tree, which is the approach we took. Each parent node is an operation, and each leaf node is a primitive. This grammar is easy to describe, and we modified the parser and lexer from the ray tracer assignment to accept input of CSG trees. In addition to keeping a list of primitives, we also keep a list of CSG objects (heads of CSG trees). We use a normalization algorithm from SGI's course on Programming with OpenGL: Advanced Rendering to convert a CSG tree into the following normal form: Ray tracing: The key to ray tracing is being able to determine the first point along the ray to leave or enter an object, if such a point exists. This is fairly easy if our world consisted of nonoverlapping primitives, as was the case in the

    Constructive Solid Geometry
When the hardware accelerator provided by Apple Computer, Inc., is available, the interactive renderer can support constructive solid geometry (CSG), a method of modeling solid objects constructed from the union, intersection, or difference of other solid objects. For instance, you can define two cubes and then render the solid object that is the intersection of those two cubes. Similarly, you can define three cubes and render the solid object that is the union of two of them minus the third. For example, Figure 3 shows three cubes ( A B , and C ) together with the result of using CSG to create the solid object defined by the function ( A B C In this chapter, CSG operations are described using standard set operators: the operation A B is the set of all points that are in both A and B (that is, the intersection of A and B A B is the set of all points that are in either A or B (that is, the union of A and B A is the set of all points that are not in A (that is, the

The ingenious and engaging series The Entertainers (BBC2) ended last night, but is clearly a cut-and-come-again cake with great potential. The entertainers were dimming stars, who probably appreciated the attention but did not realise how attentive it would be. It nosed around like an embarrassingly devoted dog. It followed them to work but ignored their act. It explored their underpants with interest. It was always underfoot. Most took it in good part, but not Bernie Clifton. The panto poster called him "TV's Hilarious Comedy Star". No single word of this was accurate. He described his face as very moribund. When not on stage, it fell into pleated folds of melancholy. I was reminded of Mr Partridge, the Punch and Judy man in Hi-de-Hi, who detested children.
