    Constructive Solid Geometry
In addition to all of the primitive shapes POV-Ray supports, you can also combine multiple simple shapes into complex shapes using Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG). There are four basic types of CSG operations: union, intersection, difference, and merge. CSG objects can be composed of primitives or other CSG objects to create more, and more complex shapes.
    Inside and Outside
Most shape primitives, like spheres, boxes and blobs divide the world into two regions. One region is inside the object and one is outside. Given any point in space you can say it's either inside or outside any particular primitive object. Well, it could be exactly on the surface but this case is rather hard to determine due to numerical problems. Even planes have an inside and an outside. By definition, the surface normal of the plane points towards the outside of the plane. You should note that triangles and triangle-based shapes cannot be used as solid objects in CSG since they have no well defined inside and outside. Note: : Although triangles, bicubic_patches and some other shapes have no well defined inside and outside, they have a front- and backside which makes it possible to use a texture on the front side and an interior_texture on the back side.

    Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG)

    Solid geometry
In mathematics solid geometry was the traditional name for the geometry of three-dimensional Euclidean space space we live in. It was studied as a sequel to plane geometry Stereometry deals with the measurement s of volume s of various solid figure s: cylinder , circular cone , truncated cone, sphere prism s, blade s, wine casks.
    History
The Pythagoreans had dealt with the sphere and regular solids, but the pyramid , prism, cone and cylinder were but little known until the Platonist s took them in hand. Eudoxus established their mensuration, proving the pyramid and cone to have one-third the content of a prism and cylinder on the same base and of the same height, and was probably the discoverer of a proof that the volumes of spheres are as the cubes of their radii See also: Archimedes Demiurge Johannes Kepler , planimetry, Plato , Plato's Timaeus ...partly from the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica

In CSG, solids are described as combinations of simple primitives or other solids in a series of Boolean operations, i.e. a CSG model is constructed using a so called building block approach. A user operates only on parameterised instances of solid primitives and Boolean operations on them. Each primitive is defined as a combination of half-spaces. The construction of CSG models is exactly the same as in half-space models, except that only finite sides of the half-spaces are included. Using Boolean operations on finite solid primitives, the resulting solid is always guaranteed to be finite as well. Any primitive for which all the operation procedures can be written can be included into a CSG modeller. A normal addition to a CSG modeller is sweeping primitives. For example, a translational sweeping primitive is defined by a bounded face and the sweeping vector. Typical standard primitives are cone, cylinder, sphere, torus, block and right angular wedge. Operations are union, intersection and difference. Other CSG primitives are swept solids, i.e. a revolution or linear sweep of a planar face which may contain holes. Composite CSG solids may also be subjected to Boolean operations. Using a Boolean operation, a new solid is constructed from two intersecting solids. This technique is common in mechanical engineering since it gives a precise, analytic description of the model. The convenience of a CSG modeller depends on the set of primitives and Boolean operations available. A simple CSG model with a Boolean subtraction is shown in Figure

    Combinatorial solid geometry
This is a method for defining shapes. A number of parameterised families of shapes, called primitives, are given, and others are defined as logical combinations of the primitives. This type of construction corresponds to human intuitions along the line of make a square and cut out a one quarter corner square The primatives are typically a set of basic shapes, such as a cuboid(a,b,c), which is a rectangular prism, with its edges aligned to the axes of the coordinate system. The x-dimension is a, the y-dimension is b, the z-dimension is c. Thus the corners are: (0,0,0) (0,0,c) (0,b,0) (0,b,c) (a,0,0) (a,0,c) (a,b,0) (a,b,c) But rotations and translations can also be defined to place the object exactly where it is required. Other shape could be spheres, elipsoids, cones, cylinders, and tori, as well as the convex hull of a designated set of points. Cones and cylinders might be based on shapes other that circles, and in general there is the idea of an extrusion along a designated curve. In CSG there can be many ways to define an object, and there appears to be no way to obtain a cannonical form that would allow the fast determination of equality of two shapes (even assuming that the information is exact). However, it is very easy to compute further logical operations of two objects, and to determine if a given point is inside the resulting object.

    Constructive Solid Geometry
The method of Constructive Solid Geometry arose from the observation that many industrial components derive from combinations of various simple geometric shapes such as spheres, cones, cylinders and rectangular solids. In fact the whole design process often started with a simple block which might have simple shapes cut out of it, perhaps other shapes added on etc. in producing the final design. For example consider the simple solid below: This simple component could be produced by gluing two rectangular blocks together and then drilling the hole. Or in CSG terms the the union of two blocks would be taken and then the difference of the resultant solid and a cylinder would be taken. In carrying out these operations the basic primitive objects , the blocks and the cylinder, would have to be scaled to the correct size, possibly oriented and then placed in the correct relative positions to each other before carrying out the logical operations. The Boolean Set Operators used are:
    • union - A + B is the set of points that are in A or B.

    Constructive Solid Geometry
POV-Ray supports Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) with five different operations: difference, intersection, merge, union and negation (inversion). While the first four operations represent binary operators, i. e. they need two arguments, the negation is a unary operator, it takes only one argument.
    About CSG
Constructive Solid Geometry is a technique for combining two or more objects to create a new object using the three boolean set operators union intersection , and negation . It only works with solid objects, i. e. objects that have a well-defined interior. This is the case for all objects described in the sections "Finite Solid Primitives" and "Infinite Solid Primitives" CSG shapes may be used anywhere a standard shape can be used, even inside other CSG shapes. They can be translated, rotated or scaled in the same way as any other shape. The shapes making up the CSG shape may be individually translated, rotated and scaled as well.
    Inside and Outside
Most shape primitives, like spheres, boxes and blobs divide the world into two regions. One region is inside the object and one is outside.

    Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG)
It is the concept of CSG to provide solid 3D primitives which are described a set of parameters reflecting the object dimensions (Figure ). The CSG primitives are simple objects such as cubes, boxes, tetrahedrons or quadratic pyramids. They are considered to be bounded point sets in 3D space, and they can easily be combined using Boolean set operations ( union intersection and difference ) in order to represent more complex objects consisting of more than one primitive (cf. section ). In theory, the (bounded) primitives themselves can be considered to be the intersections of half spaces containing all points P for which the inequality is fulfilled, where f P ) is a characteristic function of the point P and f P ) = describes the bounding surface of the point set, e.g. a plane in 3D space ( halfspace models The most natural way to represent a CSG model is the CSG tree which can be defined as follows: where is an instance of one of the primitives of the primitive data base
