Grampian Television 2002
Based on the short story by Booker Prize winning author Ian McEwan, Solid Geometry was produced as one of six short films in for the New Found Land film scheme. One of the major points of the scheme is that the films are made using digital technology instead of film. First published in McEwan's First Love, Last Rites (Cape, 1976) collection, Solid Geometry tells the tale of a man who inherits his grandfather's journals and whilst editing them discovers a secret relating to 'the plane without a surface.' After experimenting with the instructions in the diaries he discovers that he can make objects, and people, disappear. An earlier version of Solid Geometry had been due to be produced by the BBC in , but it was cancelled shortly before recording began due to objections over the content of the play. The script was subsequently published in both the UK and USA as part of The Imitation Game , a book of screenplays which had been written by Ian McEwan . Adapted by actor Denis Lawson , and starring his nephew Ewan McGregor, Solid Geometry

Constructive solid geometry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Constructive solid geometry (CSG) is a branch of solid modelling that deals with representations of a solid object as a combination of simpler solid objects. It is a procedural modelling technique used in 3D computer graphics and CAD The simplest solid objects used for the representation are called primitives . Typically they are the objects of simple shape: cuboids cylinders prisms pyramids ... cones . The set of allowable primitives may be restricted; e.g., curved shapes may be forbidden. It is said that an object is constructed from primitives by means of allowable operations , which are typically Boolean operations on sets union intersection and difference Table of contents 1 CSG Operations 1.1 Boolean Union

CSG Operations
In modelling packages, basic geometric objects such as the cube or 'box', sphere or ellipse, torus, and a number of other shapes that can be described using a mathematical formula, are commonly known as primitives . These objects can typically be described by a procedure which accepts some number of parameters ; for example, a sphere may be described by the coordinates of its center point, along with a radius value.

Constructive Solid Geometry
Constructive Solid Geometry is the process of building solid objects from other solids. The three CSG operators are Union, Intersection, and Difference. Each operator acts upon two objects and produces a single object result. By combining multiple levels of CSG operators, complex objects can be produced from simple primitives. The union of two objects results in an object that encloses the space occupied by the two given objects. Intersection results in an object that encloses the space where the two given objects overlap. Difference is an order dependent operator; it results in the first given object minus the space where the second intersected the first.

3.7 Constructive Solid Geometry with the Stencil Buffer
Before continuing, the it may help for the reader to be familiar with the concepts of stencil buffer usage presented in Section Constructive solid geometry (CSG) models are constructed through the intersection ( ), union ( ), and subtraction (-) of solid objects, some of which may be CSG objects themselves[ ]. The tree formed by the binary CSG operators and their operands is known as the CSG tree. Figure shows an example of a CSG tree and the resulting model. The representation used in CSG for solid objects varies, but we will consider a solid to be a collection of polygons forming a closed volume. ``Solid,'' ``primitive,'' and ``object'' are used here to mean the same thing.
CSG objects have traditionally been rendered through the use of ray-casting, which is slow, or through the construction of a boundary representation (B-rep). B-reps vary in construction, but are generally defined as a set of polygons that form the surface of the result of the CSG tree. One method of generating a B-rep is to take the polygons forming the surface of each primitive and trim away the polygons (or portions thereof) that do not satisfy the CSG operations. B-rep models are typically generated once and then manipulated as a static model because they are slow to generate. Drawing a CSG model using stencil usually means drawing more polygons than a B-rep would contain for the same model. Enabling stencil also may reduce performance. Nonetheless, some portions of a CSG tree may be interactively manipulated using stencil if the remainder of the tree is cached as a B-rep.

Boolean Algebra with Solids
Here I want to explain some of the fundamental principals of constructing new and more complex solids by combining primitive shapes. For this we use the technique called 'csg', which allows roughtly speaking the same operations with solids which are custom in boolean algebra - and a little bit more than that. In this case a solid is considered as a special set of points in the three dimensional space. On this set of points we can work with boolean set operations.
csg objects: Such operations may be used with all solids and all shapes which have a clear defined "inside" and "outside". The most important of these are: "box", "sphere", "cylinder", "cone", "torus", "prism". A "plane" must be considered specially: the normal vector points to the "outside" of the plane while any points on the other side of this "plane" are defined as "inside". All csg operations may be combined freely.
The csg operations are in detail: union of sets difference intersection complement opening
