Thru the Moebius Strip
By Joe Fordham T o aficionados of the comic book and visual arts worlds, designer Jean Giraud Moebius needs little introduction. From his early comic strips for the French satirical magazine Hara-Kiri, through the creation of his Western hero Lieutenant Blueberry and the co-founding of Metal Hurlant magazine in 1975, Moebius became widely known for his elegant, highly detailed visual style and offbeat sense of humor. National Lampoon's Heavy Metal magazine, an American version of Metal Hurlant, brought Moebius' art to a wider stateside audience, particularly with his science fiction and fantasy stories Arzach and The Airtight Garage. Moebius became part of the design team involved with director Alejandro Jodorowsky's legendary attempted adaptation of Dune. The collapse of that legendary mid-'70s project led Moebius indirectly to a brief stint on Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), whose samurai-armored spacesuits bear a distinctly Moebius feel.

(continued from page 1) In the beginning I had one idea about an original kind of spaceship and it gave me some ideas for a story," Moebius said. "After I met with Raymond, he became the central person in charge of the money on the project and finding most of the people to work on the movie in France. We started talking to Frank and spent 10 days writing the story together, meeting every day with Frank taking notes." "Jean intuitively explained the story in much in the same way as a parent might tell a child a story, to entertain them," Foster said. "My job was to listen and try to help him piece together the various elements. It was magical the way it came together. I drafted that into a rough nine-page treatment, then presented this to our screenwriter, Jim Cox ( FernGully, The Rescuers Down Under ), who used that as the basis for his first draft. Last spring that draft was presented to Jean, who came to L.A. for a week, and he worked with Jim and me, making adjustments. When Jim completed that second draft, we started three months of pre-production."

R E L E A S E D A T E Sometime, 2005 (World premiere in Paris, may include an IMAX release. The release of this film has been delayed several times, dating back to at least the summer of 2003)
C A S T A N D C R E D I T S Starring: (voices) Mark Hamill , Christ Marquette, Michael Dorn Kellie Martin , Jean Simmons, Jonathan Taylor Thomas
Directed by: Frank Foster (dramatic debut)
Produced by: Raymond Neoh, Arne Wong
Written by: Jim Cox, Paul Gertz, Jean Giraud (concept)
Distributor: Currently seeking USA distribution
N O T E S In what is promised to be a brand-new premise not based on any of Giraud's books, the high definition film is about a physicist named Simon Weir, who gets trapped at a distant alien planet due to crossing a space-time portal he created. Eight years later his son Jac finds the portal entrance and rescues his father, but now they need to help dad's giant alien benefactor regain his throne. Think of it as a Jack and the Beanstalk fairytale in a MYST setting. One hundred percent 3D CGI animation started in March 2001 in China, with a crew of 200 animators and a budget of $8 million. Giraud, who supervises the production from Paris, created 400 sketches as inspiration for the animation. GDC Holdings Limited obtained intellectual property rights to the epic film and has developed a large number of merchandising products based on the movie's zany characters.

Moebius Strip Construction
Assembly:
  • Step 0: Have ready glue, paste, or tape to use in connecting the ends of the paper. Step 1: Cut a rectangular strip of paper in which the length is 10 to 11 times the width. In the picture above, the ends of the strip have been labeled so the top edge on each end is A and the bottom edge on each end is B. Step 2: Hold each end of the long rectangular strip in front of you, one end in each hand, so as to almost form a bracelet or cylinder. Step 3: Rather than forming the bracelet or cylinder, hold one end in place and twist the other end a half-twist so the original top edge - A - of the twisted end lines up with the original bottom edge - B - of the other end. Step 4: Tape, glue, or paste the two ends together so as to form a twisted strip of paper. This is a Moebius strip.
Activities:
  • Place the point of a pencil on the surface of the Moebius strip and draw a line (as down the center of a road) until you reach the end. Take a pair of scissors and snip a hold on this line, insert the scissors and carefully cut along the line drawn down the center of the Moebius strip. Construct another Moebius strip. Rather than cutting the strip down the center as in the last activity, cut 1/3 of the way from an edge.

Introduction
A+B=X Macrocosm Braindance ... www.parano.org Printable page The Moebius Strip (2001) The Moebius Strip
Photo: Manuel Vason A Moebius Strip is a two dimensional surface with only one face. A Moebius Strip represents infinity. When you cut a moebius strip in half, lengthways, you get a double moebius strip. If you cut it again you get a triple strip, and so on into infinity. When you ride a moebius strip, it is like going back to the beginning, in space, on a one-dimensional surface. If you cut it lengthways, then you must continue, and continue, and you will never cross your starting point again. Like life itself, it is a perpetual restart, never from the same point. The sound surrounding the 5 dancers is full. The space is vibrating. Their bodies are lines in space. The movements are continuous and fluid. The tension comes from the density of the movement, from the density of the music. The piece is evolving, in a circular way. Always close to the starting point, always different. The Moebius Strip is a journey that starts long before the spectators enter the auditorium. Marker
You can amaze your friends with this piece of paper that has only one side! Here's how to do it: Cut a long, skinny strip of paper. Make a loop with the paper by matching up the narrow ends. Make one twist into the paper and tape the ends together. With your marker, start drawing a line on the piece of tape and continue the line without lifting your marker until you meet up at the tape where you started. You drew a line on both sides of the strip of paper without lifting your marker. The paper only has one side!

This space exhibits interesting properties, such as having only one side and remaining in one piece when split down the middle. The properties of the strip were discovered independently and almost simultaneously by two German mathematicians, August Ferdinand Moebius and Johann Benedict Listing, in 1858. Moebius Strip
By Cherubino Author's note: I was thinking about several things: How did Tyr alone survive the destruction of his Pride? Why his appearance changed several times during "Ouroboros"? And why his attitude towards humans in general and his crewmates in particular changed after that same episode? All this thinking brought me to this story. Great many thanks to Lassar and Andromeda Valentine for their encouragement and support. You all know the drill, the characters of Andromeda are not mine, they belong to whomever they belong, I just borrow them. Alexandra belongs to me. I guess you can call me a wonderer, a muser maybe. My mother labeled me "a free spirit" and my father thought I was a troublemaker. I could never stay long in one place; I could never decide what to do with my life. Correction, I knew what to do with it; I just couldn't make up my mind on location and duration. So all this uncertainty and indecisions had finally got me here. Where *is* here somewhere in the mostly snowy part of Europe where the Institute of Quantum and Temporal Mechanics took residence several years ago. I am their physician. I was their best field medic until I messed up that mission. The Rule is cast-iron - no interferences or interactions of any kind with cultures or people. Dura lex sed lex. And I ignored it. I still carry the scar from the wound - the price of my disobedience. I am not allowed on the field any more, but I am still the best surgeon they have. And besides, I know so much it is dangerous, for them and for me. And here I remain, almost against my will but not entirely. My consolation is that I still get to practice medicine and the fact that this place has the best stables in the whole wide world.

A Möbius strip is made by taking a strip of paper, twisting it once and joining the ends. Now the strip has only one side and one edge. This can be demonstrated by putting a pencil down on the strip, turning the strip under the pencil until the pencil line returns to its starting place. The pencil line will appear on both sides of the strip, which means, in effect, that it has only one side. The Möbius strip was named after August Möbius in 1885. The classic joke concerning the Möbius strip is this: Why did the chicken cross the Möbius strip? Answer: To get to the same side.

In the eighteenth century, Euler (1707-1783) observed that the solids enclosed by plane faces have the number of vertices (V) minus the number of edges (E) plus the number of faces (F) that equals 2, the formula therefore being V - E + F = 2. But this formula does not work for all polyhedra e.g., a polyhedron with a hole so the constitution of a hole in a solid as well as its relation to Euler's formula for polyhedra was questioned. Recent studies of analemma which also mimics the figure eight show that its asymmetry is a result of the sun being projected to the curved surface of the Earth, but purging this deformation [ Symbolically, the eternal revolving is traditionally symbolised by the
