From: php scripts phpeverywhere It takes a snake to prove that .NET is fast for scripting Some language experts have said publicly that scripting languages based on .NET and Java Bytecodes will always perform poorly due to limitations in bytecode design. Jim Hugunin, contrarian to the core, has posted an email which suggests that .NET could possibly be faster than C by comparing Python written in C (CPython) with one written in .NET (IronPython). Jim is the original author of the Java implementation of Python (Jython), so he has the skills to back his claim. If his claims are correct, I think that the push to move scripting languages (eg. PHP) to Parrot or similar bytecode systems which can be Just-In-Time compiled will accelerate. document.write('Click here for great deals on Salvia - IamShaman');

Inquirer News Service
THE CURRENT controversy over the removal by the Metro Manila Development Authority of old trees along Katipunan Street in Quezon City to ease traffic congestion has focused public attention on the importance of trees to human life on earth.
It is now common knowledge that plants and trees serve living creatures in multifarious ways. They prevent floods and soil erosion, give off oxygen, provide food and shelter for both animals and man and a source of medicine to fight all kinds of diseases. But neither the environmentalists nor the average modern individual is aware of the hidden life of plants or of their extra sensory powers. It was the American polygraph expert, Cleve Backster, who first brought up the incredible idea that plants are aware of their environment and have rudimentary emotions or feelings. Subsequently, he proved that hypothesis beyond doubt. He discovered that plants reacted to the death of other living creatures even though the doomed victims were not in the same room.

Subsequently, he proved that hypothesis beyond doubt. He discovered that plants reacted to the death of other living creatures even though the doomed victims were not in the same room.
His original experiment consisted of attaching polygraph electrodes on the leaves of philodendron plants. In another room, Backster set up a machine that would dump live brine shrimp at random into boiling water. As a control the machine occasionally would dump water without shrimp to see if the plants in the other room simply reacted to the mechanical process rather than to the death of the shrimp.

Maxwell Shoe, one of the leading US footwear design and distribution companies has recently replaced their existing systems management solution with the full QSystem Management Suite from CCSS to run on their IBM eServer iSeries network. The CCSS Suite, which includes the performance monitoring and reporting solution, QSystem Monitor, the message escalation and management solution, QMessage Monitor and the mobile systems management solution QRemote Control, now run on an 830 iSeries machine responsible for corporate applications and a 820 iSeries machine responsible for their warehouse operations, from two separate locations near Boston, Massachusetts. Operators at Maxwell Shoe found their previous solution was not sufficiently robust to handle their message escalation and notification needs and also the team required a solution that was able to offer timely system information, such as response statistics, together with efficient visual prompts that would immediately alert them to any potential problems before they became a threat to their systems. Raymond Roy Jr., Head of Technical Services for Maxwell Shoe, cites their other main consideration: ‘Our critical accounting, inventory, ordering and distribution functions depend on the high availability we can maintain with the iSeries. I would say that a quick ROI of solutions like QSystem Monitor and QMessage Monitor can easily be achieved in a demanding iSeries environment and that was certainly a criteria of our expectations.’

In 1936 an American (Alonzo Church) and a Briton (Alan M. Turing) published independently (as is often the coincidence in science) the basics of a new branch in Mathematics (and logic): computability or recursive functions (later to be developed into Automata Theory). The authors confined themselves to dealing with computations which involved "effective" or "mechanical" methods for finding results (which could also be expressed as solutions (values) to formulae). These methods were so called because they could, in principle, be performed by simple machines (or human-computers or human-calculators, to use Turing's unfortunate phrases). The emphasis was on finiteness: a finite number of instructions, a finite number of symbols in each instruction, a finite number of steps to the result. This is why these methods were usable by humans without the aid of an apparatus (with the exception of pencil and paper as memory aids). Moreover: no insight or ingenuity were allowed to "interfere" or to be part of the solution seeking process. No one succeeded to prove that a function must be recursive in order to be effectively calculable. This is (as Post noted) a "working hypothesis" supported by overwhelming evidence. We don't know of any effectively calculable function which is not recursive, by designing new TMs from existing ones we can obtain new effectively calculable functions from existing ones and TM computability stars in every attempt to understand effective calculability (or these attempts are reducible or equivalent to TM computable functions).

Voting machines prove new not always better
By MILFORD FRYER mfryer@theadvocate.com Suburban editor
The problems with electronic voting machines don't seem ready to subside, even though a district judge has upheld an election that was challenged based on their use. That challenge, pursued by a losing candidate in Independence, was in one of the only two parishes with electronic machines Tangipahoa and Ascension. There were problems in two municipalities Independence and Ponchatoula in the March 9 elections. "We have more problems in those two parishes than all of the other parishes put together," Secretary of State Fox McKeithen said after ballots cast in the Ponchatoula elections March 9 failed to get properly posted with the secretary of state's office. "It was a human error," McKeithen's commissioner of elections, Wade O. Martin, said of the Ponchatoula foul-up. "Test votes were not cleared from our computer." Whatever the cause, the machines' problems clearly raise eyebrows.

collision detection send me yours back to collision detection December 16, 2002 Are you human? A new test can prove it There's a cool story in the New York Times Science section about a reverse Turing Test. Instead of the classic Turing test a contest where the computer tries to dissemble as a human it's a test that poses the opposite condition: The humans try to prove that they're actually, well, human. The story begins with Yahoo. A few years back, they were having problems with spambots. Spambots were logging onto free Yahoo mail accounts and sending out piles of crap often hundreds of times a second. Yahoo seemed powerless to stop them; how do you prevent a robot from signing up for an account? By imposing a test that separates humans from robots definitively. After all, there are certain skills humans have that computers have never been able to emulate: ... in many simple tasks, a typical 5-year-old can outperform the most powerful computers. Indeed, the abilities that require much of what is usually described as intelligence, like medical diagnosis or playing chess, have proved far easier for computers than seemingly simpler abilities: those requiring vision, hearing, language or motor control. "Abilities like vision are the result of billions of years of evolution and difficult for us to understand by introspection, whereas abilities like multiplying two numbers are things we were explicitly taught and can readily express in a computer program," said Dr. Jitendra Malik, a professor specializing in computer vision at the University of California at Berkeley.

How To Make Money With Your Answering Machine
Your Answering Machine can be used to make MORE MONEY than you've ever made in your whole life! People with absolutely no business or marketing skills have been successful with Answering Machine Marketing methods. Recently, a young couple in Gossell, Kansas, went from three hundred to three million dollars, marketing money-making information in the form of books, manuals, and reports using a simple telephone answering machine. This can only prove that the American Dream is still alive and well. this couple has also proved that if you have: (1) A Great Idea; (2) Believe in your ability to make it happen; (3) Non-Stop motivation to take action now!, and (4) If you persist...You Can Have It All!
UNLIMITED MONEY MAKING POTENTIAL
The money-making potential of a simple telephone answering machine is almost unlimited. So how do I use my answering machine, and what do I sell? Good question! The possibilities are endless! Many people are making a lot of money selling "How-To" information in the form of books, reports, manuals, directories. Topics include: Home Worker Guides, A Government Job Guide, Making Money As A Free-Lance Writer, Making Money With Your Pick-Up Truck, Making Money At U.S. Government Auctions, and more. However, the telephone answering machine ad approach can be adapted to many, many different products and services: Insurance or real Estate selling, home mortgage reductions, home improvements, Seminars of all kinds, Dating Services, and any kind of restaurant, social events, and 1001 other types of services.

The blue display below is called the Fraudulent Voting Machine.
It is a teaching demonstration that shows why electronic voting machines need to print each voter's choices on a paper ballot before the voter leaves the booth. (This would enable each voter to verify that their paper ballot is correct. After verification, the ballot is stored in a locked ballot box. Later, election officials can use the voter-verified paper ballots to perform independent re-counts and verify that the electronic voting systems worked correctly.) The demo starts by asking you to choose a "machine test" or "real election." Machine tests give accurate final tallies, but real elections might not! This is because, in a real election, one particular candidate is programmed to win. Is it realistic to demonstrate a program that works two different ways? Yes! If you read the news you know that at least one major manufacturer of voting systems does something similar they use one program during tests, and a different program during real elections. And many manufacturers install "patches" which means different programming just before an election.

Machine-tool orders prove economic health
By The Associated Press
NEW YORK Orders for American-made machine tools surged in February compared with a year earlier and reflected strong demand from domestic manufacturers, said a monthly trade report released yesterday.
It estimated domestic orders totaled $562 million, up 22 percent from $461 million in February 1996. For the first two months of the year, it estimated orders totaled $1.145 billion, up 13 percent from the year earlier.
The report was compiled by a joint venture of The Association for Manufacturing Technology and the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association, both based in suburban Washington.
About 70 percent of the nation's machine-tool makers report their orders data to the two trade groups and they derive their estimates of the totals from that information.
Rising demand for machine tools coincides with other evidence that the U.S. economy is enjoying robust growth, marked by expansions of manufacturing, rising incomes, healthy consumer spending and low unemployment.
The machine tool orders report isn't seasonally adjusted and can fluctuate sharply from month to month. But it can be a useful barometer of the manufacturing industry's long-term confidence in the economy.
