Ask A Scientist General Science Archive Geometry Applications Sunday, October 27, 2002 name Lisa F. status educator age 20s Question - I am teaching an applied geometry class, and would like to know any projects or hands-on examples and applications of angles formed from intersecting lines. In other words, when could my students use this information other than in my classroom? Lisa, Ask the students if they can figure out a way to divide a rectangular piece of cake into two pieces of exactly the same size without using any kind of measuring instrument. Make the answer a little less obvious by describing the piece of cake as a long, skinny rectangle. The answer: Cut the piece diagonally. You can then discuss the angles and congruency of the pieces. Toric geometry applications to CAGD Rimvydas Krasauskas, Vilnius University Toric surfaces with their homogeneous coordinates (in the sense of David Cox) have several applications in Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD): - many low degree rational surfaces used in CAGD appear to be real toric, or non-canonical real parts of complex toric surfaces; - classical Bezier surface constructions can be naturally generalized to toric Bezier patches; - all rational curves and natural subpatches of toric surfaces can be constructively described using the concept of universal rational parametrization.
