  • FUZZY SET THEORY
  • FUZZY MOLECULAR MODELING Since fuzzy logic is, by definition, imprecise, it is a natural means of representing the imprecision of lattice parameters and bond angles. Fuzzy lattice parameters are created by collecting parameter values from the literature. From the minimum, maximum, and average of these parameter values, a fuzzy number is created that represents the imprecision in that parameter. Then, through the use of fuzzy arithmetic operators and recently developed fuzzy trigonometric functions, fuzzy atom locations within the unit cell and bond angles can be calculated. The benefit of using fuzzy logic in this manner is that it directly enables representation and calculation with the imprecision found in chemical compounds, which arises from measurement variability due to measurement error, structural defects, and thermal and vibrational characteristics.

Seized by Agreement, Swamped by Understanding
Fuzzy Logic: A Key to Shared Wisdom Vladimir Dimitrov and Judith Bihl Dimitrov
Abstract
The ancient mythology could serve as an effective medium for metaphorically conveying complex concepts and principles to a broad spectrum of people. In this paper we show how the fuzzy logic approach can be used to translate the metaphoric language of ancient myths and legends into a 'soft' scientific paradigm which helps us to understand better the social complexity of our time. The Wisdom of Humanity combines in its indestructible integrity both the rationality and irrationality of human thinking and acting. Logic is the torch of rationality in the darkness of unknown and uncertainty. Myths, legends, metaphors and paradoxes are the multifaceted eyes of irrationality - through them we can see in the darkness of unknown and uncertainty without any other torch. On the boundary between the rational and irrational is Fuzziness. Human beings are 'at root' irrational (Williams 1988) - the hidden power of their illogical intuition challenges constantly the constraints and 'norms' of rationality. Any discovery, before it happens, always seems irrational - it challenges and contradicts rationality. After it happens, rationality adopts it immediately - it becomes part of a new rational explanation. Just at the border, just at the edge of this transition, is the zone of fuzziness. How often does that burning feeling of an approaching insight bring us disquiet: the old is not accepted any more, the new is felt almost in certainty - but when we try to articulate it in words it seems so unclear, so imprecise, so fuzzy, that rationality does not tolerate it, attacks it, rejects it.

In the field of fuzzy logic theory basic research work is done on the topics of fuzzy quantors and implications, approximate modus ponens, variants of the compositional rule of inference, correctness and equivalence of the FITA and FATI principles, analysis of rule-based fuzzy systems, fuzzy temporal logic. Another important point are fuzzy logic applications. Our research activities cover methodological work on fuzzy expert systems, decision support, logical programming, hybrid reasoning and classification as well as practical applications. The last ones are worked out in cooperations with partners from the civil engineering, electronic, economic, chemical and medicine faculties. Examples of projects, already finished and still under work, are:
  • an information and consulting system to optimize machine parameters for resistance welding
  • fuzzy control for bending iron sheets
  • selecting bending methods for iron sheet bending
  • determination of parameters for profile bending
  • architecture selection for the design of VLSI
  • self adapting fuzzy controllers
  • support of production management with multiple goals
  • tumor diagnosis based on uncertain knowledge
  • diagnosis of unknown abdominal pain
  • configuration of chemical process lines
Besides these concrete projects several activities are concerned with the empirical analysis of (rule-based) fuzzy systems. Evaluation of existing rulebases is done to test their suitability and to give hints to optimize them. Last not least much research is done to investigate the combination of fuzz logic with neural networks on one hand and genetic algorithms on the other hand.

Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic rank at the top of the list of AI technologies that everybody's heard of and few understand (right up there with Genetic Algorithms ). That's probably becuase these technologies try, in their own way, to solve the AI problem "Mother Nature's Way"through the force of sheer evolution and adaptation. And everybody likes the idea of "playing God" just a little bit...the idea of watching your creations actually learn is pretty darn irrestible for most of us.
Just how useful these technologies are to the game developer is what this page is all about, of course. I've gathered here various neural network and fuzzy logic resources that I've found useful. I hope you do too. If you know of a page I should add, please let me know

Fuzzy Logic Control of Inspired Oxygen Concentration in Ventilated Newborn Infants
Yao Sun MD, Isaac Kohane MD, PhD, Ann Stark MD
Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA The control of oxygen delivery to mechanically ventilated newborn infants is a time intensive process that must balance adequate tissue oxygenation against possible toxic effects of oxygen exposure. Investigation in computer assisted control of mechanical ventilation is increasing, although there are very few studies involving newborn infants. We have implemented a fuzzy controller for the adjustment of inspired oxygen concentration (FIO2) in ventilated newborns. The controller utilizes rules produced by neonatologists, and operates in real-time. A clinical trial of this controller is currently taking place in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Children's Hospital, Boston, MA.
INTRODUCTION
Oxygen toxicity plays a role in the development of chronic lung disease in newborn infants requiring mechanical ventilation. In premature infants, varying levels of oxygen exposure are implicated in the development of retinopathy of prematurity.

Lotfi Zadeh: Fuzzy logic-Incoporating Real-World Vagueness
By Pragya Agarwal
Back to Classics Background Fuzzy logic was first invented as a representation scheme and calculus for uncertain or vague notions. It is basically a multi-valued logic that allows more human-like interpretation and reasoning in machines by resolving intermediate categories between notations such as true/false, hot/cold etc used in Boolean logic. This was seen as an extension of the conventional Boolean Logic that was extended to handle the concept of partial truth or partial false rather than the absolute values and categories in Boolean logic. Philosophers such as Plato had posited the laws of thought and one of these thoughts was the Law of Excluded Middle . Parminedes proposed the first version of this rule around 400 B.C. and stated amidst controversy that statements could be both true and not true at the same time. The Greek Philosopher Plato laid the foundations for the fuzzy logic by proposing a third region between true and false where the two notions tumbled together. In the early 1900s, Lukasiewicz extended on to the conventional bi-valued logic of Aristotle and proposed a tri-valued logic in his paper in 1920 titled On three-valued logic The fuzzy set theory was introduced by Professor Lotfi Zadeh in 1965 and can be seen as an infinite- valued logic. Lotfi Zadeh is currently serving as a director of BISC (Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing). Prior to 1965 Zadeh's work had been centered on system theory and decision analysis. Since then, his research interests have shifted to the theory of fuzzy sets and its applications to artificial intelligence, linguistics, logic, decision analysis, control theory, expert systems and neural networks. Currently, his research is focused on fuzzy logic, soft computing, computing with words, and the newly developed computational theory of perceptions and natural language.

More Notes of a Fringe Watcher
Martin Gardner
At a time when popular knowledge of basic science has sunk to a new low and books promoting angels, parapsychology, and bizarre forms of medicine and healing outnumber skeptical books by more than a thousand to one, we need a voice of sanity. Enter internationally acclaimed science writer Martin Gardner who has compiled his latest collection of columns and recent reviews. Weird Water and Fuzzy Logic The Course of Miracles , which is said to have been channelled by Jesus. Other columns address E-prime, a language that omits all forms of the verb "to be"; Norman Vincent Beale’s beliefs in the paranormal; repressed memory therapy; science blunders by famous writers; the influence of Transcendental Meditation on the career of Doug Henning; a critique of "Klingon" and other artificial languages; and much more. Gardner offers thoughtful reviews of books by such famous authors and scientists as Joseph Campbell, Freeman Dyson, Sheldon Glashow, Stephen Jay Gould, and Heinz Pagels, on a wide range of topics: modern cosmology, superstring theory, mathematical beauty, archaeological nonsense, how to make a Permanent Paranormal Object, the role of symmetry in science and art, and the theology of astronomers. MARTIN GARDNER (Henderson, NC), a fellow of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), authored the "Mathematical Games" column in

GENETIC ALGORITHMS AND FUZZY LOGIC SYSTEMS
Soft Computing Perspectives

edited by Elie Sanchez (Université de la Méditerrannée, Aix-Marseille II, France) , Takanori Shibata (BISC, University of California, Berkeley, USA)
Ever since fuzzy logic was introduced by Lotfi Zadeh in the mid-sixties and genetic algorithms by John Holland in the early seventies, these two fields widely been subjects of academic research the world over. During the last few years, they have been experiencing extremely rapid growth in the industrial world, where they have been shown to be very effective in solving real-world problems. These two substantial fields, together with neurocomputing techniques, are recognized as major parts of soft computing: a set of computing technologies already riding the waves of the next century to produce the human-centered intelligent systems of tomorrow; the collection of papers presented in this book shows the way. The book also contains an extensive bibliography on fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms.
Contents:
  • Foreword (L Davies)
  • Skill Acquisition and Skill-Based Motion Planning for Hierarchical Intelligent Control of a Redundant Manipulator (T Shibata)
  • Automatic Fuzzy Tuning and Its Applications (H Ishigami, T Fukuda, T Shibata)
