Fuzzy logic
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Fuzzy Logic is a superset of Boolean logic dealing with the concept of partial truth . Whereas classical logic holds that everything can be expressed in binary terms (0 or 1, black or white, yes or no), fuzzy logic replaces Boolean truth values with degrees of truth which are very similar to probabilities (except that they need not sum to one). This allows for values between and 1, shades of gray, and maybe; it allows partial membership in a set. It is highly related to fuzzy sets and possibility theory . It was introduced in the 1960s by Dr. Lotfi Zadeh of UC Berkeley . Fuzzy logic is controversial. It is widely accepted within the engineering and computer science communities but generally rejected by mathematicians and (in particular) statisticians. Critics argue that it cannot be a superset of ordinary set theory since membership functions are defined in terms of conventional sets. Others argue that it is unscientific by the standards of Karl Popper , since set membership values are not empirically verifiable. Applications: Home appliances and more
Fuzzy logic can be used to control household appliances such as washing machines (which sense load size and detergent concentration and adjust their wash cycles accordingly) and refrigerators A basic application might quantify where a limited range applies to a smooth spectrum, for instance, in temperature measurement for anti-lock brakes to function properly. Truth values derived from the specific temperature are mapped to a series of candidate quantities. These quantities can then be used to determine a separate function in accordance with the graduated value scheme.

Fuzzy Logic
The binary logic of modern computers often falls short when describing the vagueness of the real world. Fuzzy logic offers more graceful alternatives. by Bart Kosko and Satoru Isaka BART KOSKO and SATORU ISAKA are pioneers in the development of fuzzy logic systems. Kosko holds degrees in philosophy and economics from the University of Southern California, a masters in applied mathematics from the University of California, San Diego, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California, Irvine. He is an assistant professor of electrical engineering at U.S.C., a governor of the International Neural Network Society and the program co-chair of the 1993 World Congress on Neural Networks. Isaka specializes in fuzzy information processing in the research and development division at Omron Advanced Systems in Santa Clara, Calif. He is interested in applying machine learning and adaptive control systems to biomedical systems and factory automation. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in systems science from U.C.S.D., in 1986 and 1989, respectively. Computers do not reason as brains do . Computers "reason" when they manipulate precise facts that have been reduced to strings of zeros and ones and statements that are either true or false. The human brain can reason with vague assertions or claims that involve uncertainties or value judgments: The air is cool," or "That speed is fast" or "She is young." Unlike computers, humans have common sense that enables them to reason in a world where things are only partially true.

Fuzzy Logic and Musical Decisions
Peter Elsea, University of California, Santa Cruz Abstract: This article presents some of the core concepts of Fuzzy Logic and demonstrates how they may be applied to problems common in music analysis and composition. Contents:
Representation of pitches as sets
In the max environment, pitches are necessarily represented as numbers, typically by the MIDI code required to produce that pitch on a synthesizer. We must begin with and return to this representation, but for the actual manipulation of pitch data other methods are desirable, methods that are reflective of the phenomena of octave and key. A common first step is to translate the midi pitch number (mpn) into two numbers, representing pitch class (pc) and octave (oct) this is done with the formulas: oct = mpn / 12 pc = mpn % 12 The eventual reconstruction of the mpn is done by mpn = 12*oct + pc In this system pc can take the values - 11, in which represents a C. Oct typically ranges from to 10. Middle C, which is called C3 in the MIDI literature, and C4 by most musicians, is octave 5 after this conversion.

Fuzzy Logic
Overview : Fuzzy logic is a superset of conventional (Boolean) logic that has been extended to handle the uncertainty in data. It was introduced by Dr. Lotfi Zadeh of UC/Berkeley in the 1960's as a means to model the uncertainty of natural language. Fuzzy logic is useful to processes like manufacturing because of its ability to handle situations that the traditional true/false logic can't adequately deal with. It lets a process specialist describe, in everyday language, how to control actions or make decisions without having to describe the complex behavior. See "Fuzzy Logic and Neural Networks - Practical Tools for Process Management" (PC AI May/June 1994, p. 17) for a clear and concise explanation of Fuzzy Logic. Using Fuzzy Logic in Autonomous Robot Navigation
We address the problem of autonomous robot navigation in unstructured environments. By this, we mean the ability to move purposefully and without human intervention in real-world environments that have not been specifically engineered for the robot. In this research line, we inspect the use of techniques based on fuzzy logic to address some of the difficult issues in this field. In a related project , we study the use of machine learning for a similar goal. Pour les lecteurs francophones
Autonomous robot navigation
The development of techniques for autonomous robot navigation constitutes one of the major trends in the current research on mobile robotics. Two motivations underlie this trend. First, current industrial robots lack flexibility and autonomy: typically, these robots perform pre-programmed sequences of operations in highly constrained environments, and cannot deal with unexpected situations. Second, there is a clear emerging market for autonomous robots; possible applications range from intelligent service robots in offices, hospitals and factory floors, to maintenance robots operating in hazardous environments, or rescue robots operating in disaster areas. One of the main challenges posed by autonomous robot navigation is that the information about the robot's environment is normally uncertain, approximate, incomplete, or just wrong. On the one hand, real-world environments contain elements of variability that limit the utility prior information. For example, in a typical office environment furniture may change in position (chairs) and shape (drawers in desks); objects may move with unpredictable dynamics (people and carts); and even topological properties may change (doors may be closed, corridors may be blocked). On the other hand, information collected at run-time by the sensors is affected by limited by the sensor's noise, by the limited field of view, and by the inherent difficulty of the perceptual interpretation process.

Fuzzy Logic is a two-headed, four-legged singer/songwriter also known as Liz Sumner and Michael Cohen. She's the singer, he's the songwriter, and together they'll convince you that two heads are better than one.
Pick a genre. Fuzzy Logic has a song that fits it folk ballad, jazz waltz, tin pan alley torch song, or new age novelty number. As soon as you think you've got 'em figured out they'll surprise you.
In 1988 Michael and Liz formed the band Lip Service along with Bobbi Vollendorff and Glenn Austin. They performed at festivals and coffee houses across the Pacific Northwest. Their music could be heard on radio programs in the greater Seattle area, and they appeared on Sandy Bradley's Potluck, broadcast nationwide on NPR. Michael and Liz have placed highly in songwriting competitions and both were Kerrville finalists in 1993.
In 1994 Michael and Liz decided to move to New England and settled in Marlborough, NH. They discovered the area's thriving folk music scene and became a part of it as Fuzzy Logic. Their first cd as a duo, Doing The Best I Can, was released in May 2000.
