This is the first article in a six-part series about programming computers to play chess, and by extension other similar strategy games of perfect information. Chess has been described as the Drosophila Melanogaster of artificial intelligence, in the sense that the game has spawned a great deal of successful research (including a match victory against the current world champion and arguably the best player of all time, Gary Kasparov), much like many of the discoveries in genetics over the years have been made by scientists studying the tiny fruit fly. This article series will describe some of the state-of-the-art techniques employed by the most successful programs in the world, including Deep Blue. Note that by the time the series is completed (in October), I will have written a simple implementation of the game in Java, and the source code will be freely available for download on my web site. So if you want to see more code samples, be patient; I'll give you plenty in due time!

How Chess Computers Work
by Marshall Brain Table of Contents Introduction to How Chess Computers Work Computers and Chess Three-Level Tree Diagram Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices If you have ever watched a person first learning to play chess, you know that a human chess player starts with very limited abilities. Once a player understands the basic rules that control each piece, he or she can "play" chess. However, the new player is not very good. Each early defeat comes as something of a surprise "Oh, I didn't think about that!" or "I didn't see that coming!" are common exclamations. The human mind absorbs these experiences, stores away different board configurations, discovers certain tricks and ploys, and generally soaks up the nuances of the game one move at a time. As the level of skill develops, the player will often read books to discover patterns of play used by the best players. Strategies and tactics develop to guide the player through each game. For a human being, therefore, the game of chess involves a great deal of

GM Roman Dzindichashvili has made several series of chess videos under the general heading of "The Roman Forum." GM Roman Dzindzichashvili (or "Dzindzi" as he is popularly known) was twice US Chess Champion (1983, 1989) and at his peak as a competitive player was in the world top ten. He has put out three series of Roman Forum chess videos. Many of these videos deal with original opening repertoires designed with club and tournament players in mind, and endgame training. [More.]

Negamax Search
This is the fundamental structure around which the rest of chess tree searching algorithms are based. To put it simply, Negamax tree searching implements the idea that "The worse your opponent's best reply is, the better your move."
Implementing this is surprisingly easy. It uses the fact that chess is a symmetric game, and that therefore the analysis function must give symmetric scoring. That is to say that at any point, the score for white is exactly minus the score for black, or equivalently the sum of the two scores always equals zero.
This is quite straightforward to understand. If white is winning by one pawn, then clearly black is losing by the same amount. This principal can be extended to positional advantages, i.e. if white has doubled rooks on one file, then white has a bonus score, whereas black's position is weaker by the same amount because of this.
Negamax simply implements the following rough search steps;
