The computer wore a turban and played chess
An 18th century marvel is described in 'The Turk'
The Turk appeared to be all machine, but skeptics thought there was more to its workings than metal and wood. By Todd Leopold CNN (CNN) It was the chess computer Deep Blue of its time, a turban-wearing automaton that defeated all comers. Contemporaries in 18th- and 19th-century Europe were baffled. They examined the intricate gears and precisely wrought machinery of "The Turk" as they called the strange machine and many concluded that it was, indeed, an incredible achievement, a machine that could think. It was an incredible achievement. It was also a hoax. But it was an incredibly influential hoax. Charles Babbage, the godfather of the computer, played two games against the Turk. Edgar Allan Poe, the creator of the modern detective story, wrote an notable essay about it. Magicians based illusions on it. And it provoked questions about what we now call "artificial intelligence." So, even after someone finally figured out how the Turk worked that, yes, there was a man inside this contraption its place in history was secure.

Chess champion takes on computer
Kramnik hopes to avenge the supremacy of Deep Blue Story Tools
MANAMA, Bahrain The world's chess champion is facing the ultimate challenge against the ultimate opponent for the ultimate prize. Vladimir Kramnik is facing a computer programme in an eight-game competition for $1 million. The German-developed Deep Fritz computer is capable of evaluating 3.5 million moves per second. Kramnik has prepared for the "Brains of Bahrain" match, which started on Friday, by concentrating on technicalities. He said it was "quite similar but more technical" preparing for competition with a machine than against a human, and physically tougher. The first game between Kramnik and the computer ended in an uneventful draw. After the game, Kramnik, who was playing black, told reporters, "When we exchanged rooks (on move 23), I was pretty sure it would be drawn." Asked if Fritz's advantage was ever decisive, Kramnik said: "No, I wouldn't allow it.
