Applications of Inequalities Here is a simple example of how inequalities can apply to a planning situation. A manufacturer makes two types of product, X and Y.
The factory is big enough to make a total of, at most, 100 items a week.
The number of product X made must be no more than twice as much as the number of product Y. The number of product Y must be at least 25 each week. The profit on product X is more than the profit on product Y. We can solve this by using graphs The first thing to do is to translate the sentences into algebra - let x be the number of product X made in a week and y the number of product Y made. In the order they are given: x y x y y The last one cannot be translated into algebra but will be used later in interpreting the graphs. Any pair of x and y values in the unshaded quadrilateral gives possible numbers of X and Y that can be manufactured according to the conditions laid down. If the manufacturer wants to maximise the profit made, it is better to make as many of product X as possible as the profit is more than on product Y. So we choose the point at the right-hand corner of the quadrilateral, i.e. the point (62, 38). So, the manufacturer should make 62 product X and 38 product Y each week.

Computational Algebra Applications in Reliability Theory
Authors
C. Hartless

IEEE Transactions on Reliability Year: Volume: Issue: Page range: Description
Reliability analysts are typically forced to choose between using an "algorithmic programming language" or a "reliability package" for analyzing their models and lifetime data. This paper shows that computational languages can be used to bridge the gap to combine the flexibility of a programming language with the ease of use of a package. Computational languages facilitate the development of new statistical techniques and are excellent teaching tools. This paper considers three diverse reliability problems that are handled easily with a computational algebra language: system reliability bounds, lifetime data analysis, and model selection.

Linear Algebra Applications for Team Presentations
Team presentations: Prepare a presentation on the application assigned to your team. Your goal is to introduce your classmates to the topic and to prepare them for the homework exercises assigned from the section. You may use examples from the text, or you may find or make up your own. The first presentations will be given in class on Monday, Feb. 14 (A, B, C), and Friday, Feb. 18 (D). Each team member must participate. Section and page numbers are from the text, Linear Algebra with Applications (second edition), by Gareth Williams.

This isn't the easiest linear text I've scene. This also isn't the hardest. The book has a ton of applications, which is good if you're an applied math, engineering, or science major. If your interests are in pure math the applications are still a nice little side note. The book's explanations are explained as clearly as possible without giving up any rigor. At first I didn't like the book, but after looking at several other linear textbooks I realized that these authors did a good job of exp...

My graduate school work was in theoretical quantum mechanics, and was especially concentrated in the group properties of rotations. I can honestly say that I would have been twice as effective if I had this reference available then.Kuiper does an outstanding job of pulling together the traditional matrix-based approach to describing rotations with the less-frequently encountered quaternion approach. In doing so, he clearly shows the benefits of the quaternion algebra, especially for computer ...

On Some Computer Algebra Applications in Bulgaria
M. Spiridonova, A. Gerov, M. Nisheva-Pavlova We present briefly the main results of the computer algebra research group of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in the field of computer algebra applications. The group was formed in 1980 as a part of the Software Department. In 1985 Artificial Intelligence Department of the Institute was established and the computer algebra group became a part of this Department. The presentation includes different aspects of our results: - Use of Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) for solving of particular problems (at the beginning); - Development of special purpose CAS and packages using SAC-2, Reduce, Maple and Mathematica; - Our conceptions of Intelligent CAS and some projects and implementations based on these conceptions; - National and International activities of the group (seminars, conferences, collaboration with JINR-Dubna, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, INRIA-France, etc.); - University courses on CAS, graduate and postgraduate thesises.

Abstract Algebra Applications with Maple
- Book Review, by Klima, Richard E.
Annotation
From the Publisher

Abstract Algebra Applications with Maple opens the door to cryptography, coding, Polya counting theory, and the many other areas dependent on abstract algebra. The authors have carefully integrated Maple V throughout the text, enabling readers to see realistic examples of the topics discussed without struggling with the computations. It includes a first-chapter review of the mathematics required - groups, rings, and finite fields - and a Maple tutorial in the appendix along with detailed treatments of coding, cryptography, and Polya theory applications.
From The Critics
Booknews
This textbook for a one-semester applications of algebra course assumes students have completed semesters of linear and abstract algebra. The authors (North Carolina State University) cover coding, cryptography and Polya counting theory, and provide a Maple V tutorial in the appendix. Annotation c. Authors: Sascha Husa Christiane Lechner
Comments: 5 pages, no figures. To appear in the Proceedings of the Spanish Relativity Meeting (ERE 2002), Mao, Menorca, Spain, 22-24 Sept 2002
We discuss the application of computer algebra to problems commonly arising in numerical relativity, such as the derivation of 3+1-splits, manipulation of evolution equations and automatic code generation. Particular emphasis is put on working with abstract index tensor quantities as much as possible.
