The Antikythera mechanism, used for registering and predicting the motion of the stars and planets, is dated to the first century B.C. It was discovered off the coast of Greece in 1901. Arabic numerals are introduced to Europe in the eighth and ninth centuries A.D. Roman numerals remain in use in some parts of Europe until the seventeenth century. The Arabic system introduced the concepts of the zero and fixed places for tens, hundreds, thousand, etc., and greatly simplified mathematical calculations. John Napier, Baron of Merchiston, Scotland, invents logs in 1614. Logs allow multiplication and division to be reduced to addition and subtraction. Wilhelm Schickard builds the first mechanical calculator in 1623. It can work with six digits, and carries digits across columns. It works, but never makes it beyond the prototype stage. Schickard is a professor at the University of Tubingen, Germany. Blaise Pascal builds a mechanical calculator in 1642. It has the capacity for eight digits, but has trouble carrying and its gears tend to jam.

Since then, "remote sensing" has evolved to include a vast array of sophisticated instruments collecting information from both aircraft and satellites. One relatively recent advance in remote sensing is spectral imaging, which involves acquiring images at multiple electromagnetic wavelengths simultaneously. The wavelength information can be interpreted as spectral "signatures" of materials on the ground, allowing analysts to identify them remotely. How spectral imaging works: A spectral image can be thought of as many images combined, as shown here. For any location on the ground, the measurements of all the simultaneously acquired images are combined to form a "spectrum," whose bumps and wiggles are indicative of different materials. Although HSI provides an "image" such as people are used to seeing, the spectral information is what makes it unique. The more spectral information available, the better defined the wiggles, and the more accurate the identification of materials.

Fascinating facts about the invention of the Abacus by Chinese in 3000 BC ABACUS Calculation was a need from the early days when it was necessary to account to others for individual or group actions, particularly in relation to maintaining inventories (of flocks of sheep) or reconciling finances. Early man counted by means of matching one set of objects with another set (stones and sheep). The operations of addition and subtraction were simply the operations of adding or subtracting groups of objects to the sack of counting stones or pebbles. Early counting tables, named abaci, not only formalized this counting method but also introduced the concept of positional notation that we use today. The next logical step was to produce the first "personal calculator"—the abacus—which used the same concepts of one set of objects standing in for objects in another set, but also the concept of a single object standing for a collection of objects—positional notation. The Chinese abacus was developed about 5000 years ago. It was built out of wood and beads. It could be held and carried around easily. Far from being some gilded cathedral to computer art, complete with gruesome figurines attached to the high corners, the headquarters of Gargoyle Games is on the third floor of a modest, four-floor brick and concrete office block with an insurance company just below it and the smell of disinfectant haunting the cold stairways. The space consists of an office for Ted, who does the selling, a writing room for Greg and Roy, and a stock room with some games and boxes of toys. The toys are important. The computer industry has always been associated with wizzkids who discovered computers overnight and made a fortune but Gargoyle Games' graduation into the home computer market has been a different pan of chips altogether. It all started about seventeen years ago in a computer research department where Royston (his full name, though Roy will do) and Greg worked for a large services bureau. The top area of each abacus is used for fives, and the bottom area is used for ones. Abacuses are used for doing arithmetic. When doing arithmetic, you move the beads. The position of the beads represents the sum, or product, so far. It is how you can remember the partial sum or product. Experts in the use of the abacus can be very fast (and accurate), often faster than an expert with a calculator, especially addition and subtraction. Such an expert on the abacus is especially adept at data entry. In the original version of this article, I mistakenly had the top area of the two abacuses upside down. To start out, the abacus registers zero, with the bottom (ones) beads all the way down, and the top (fives) beads up I won't get deeply into the mechanics of using an abacus. Let me just say, to add one to a number, you either move a bead (in the rightmost "ones" column) up, or move all four beads down then execute a carry into the "fives" area. This carry just involves moving the five bead down (remember that up is a zero and down is a five), or moving it up (to zero) then executing a second carry into the "tens" column. The Japanese abacus, the soroban, is more elegant, as the Chinese abacus has redundant beads. With the Chinese abacus, you never have to use the bottom bead in each column, in both the "ones" and "fives" areas. These extra beads are apparently useful, if you use an extra step every time you carry. You notice that you have all five beads up, so then you know you should execute a carry.

The Chinese Abacus counts in base 10, and has been around for a long time. It can still be seen in use in Chinese stores to reckon the grocery bills, or taught its use in the classroom to the younger generations. With the advent of the pocket sized calculator, in the last couple of decades, the Chinese abacus has still got a place in modern commerce and arithmetic. It does not require any power source, other than human manipulation, and accuracy depends on the proficiency of the user. I am learning by practicing on my wooden abacus . I'd like to show you sone techniques for manipulating it for arithmetic. The little manual that is my guide has been hard to follow since its english is not very clear, and cramps many stages of a process together. I hope that my presentation here using pictorial examples with my own comments will put across the message. Below is a diagram of an abacus (a hybrid of the two I have). It is best to leave any preconcieved notions about beads on sticks behind, as there are things which require a new way of thinking, which hopefully, will not bee too hard to comprehend.
