Institute for Environment and Sustainability [Sun, 06/Jun/2004] Located in Ispra (Italy), the Institute for Environment and Sustainability ( IES ) is one of the institutes that constitute the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. In line with the JRC mission, the aim of IES is to provide scientific and technical support to European Union strategies for the protection of the environment contributing to a sustainable development. IES works in close collaboration with official laboratories, research centres and industries of the EU's Member States, creating a bridge between the EU's policies and the European citizen. A special consideration is given to the EU enlargement process by expanding all IES existing networks to the applicant countries. The combination of complementary expertise in the fields of experimental sciences, modeling, geomatics and remote sensing puts the IES in a strong position to contribute to the implementation of the European Research Area and to the achievement of a sustainable environment.
The mission : The mission of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability is to provide scientific and technical support to EU policies for the protection of the environment contributing to a sustainable development in Europe.

Renaissance Europe Conference
June 14th, 2004 in Brussels This meeting is an initiative of European Partners for the Environment celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and the Regional Environment Center. It takes place within the framework of Renaissance Europe, a joint initiative of the EPE-REC-Progressio Foundation, to catalyse the creation of framework conditions for a participatory, inclusive, enterprising, culturally creative and sustainable Europe that can enable the people of Europe and the world to fulfil their dreams now and for generations to come. The Draft European Constitution expected to be approved by the Inter Governmental Conference by June 2004 states that "the Union's aim is to promote peace, its values and the well-being of it peoples". (Draft Art I-3, §1). The European "reunification" and a new approach to accelerate the transition towards the Well-Being of Society are, in our views, the two pillars of the Second Renaissance of Europe. The "Well-Being of Society" think-tank meeting is designed to provide a forum where agents of change from government, civil society and companies can meet to explore how they can (i) be mutually supportive in improving the well-being of people in Europe and around the world and (ii) engineer new partnerships to accelerate the transition towards a global well-being.
