What are the common types of environmental noise? In our surroundings, there are different sources emitting various types of environmental noise. Type of Environmental Noise Sources Examples Transportation
aircrafts, trains, road vehicles, vessels Industrial buildings factories - machineries, air-conditioning systems Commercial buildings office buildings - air-conditioning systems
restaurants - air-conditioning systems, kitchen ventilating systems Construction sites site formation (e.g. excavation), piling, road work, demolition, renovation Domestic buildings mahjong playing, hi-fi, musical instruments Public places open markets, streets, parks Products intruder alarms of buildings and motor vehicles
The following diagram demonstrates the sound pressure levels of various types of environmental noise. Please click on the demo button to appreciate the noise levels from these sources.

Experts agree that continued exposure to noise above 85 dBA over time, will cause hearing loss. To know if a sound is loud enough to damage your ears, it is important to know both the loudness level (measured in decibels, dBA) and the length of exposure to the sound. In general, the louder the noise, the less time required before hearing loss will occur. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (1998), the maximum exposure time at 85 dBA is 8 hours. At 110 dBA, the maximum exposure time is one minute and 29 seconds. If you must be exposed to noise, it is recommended that you limit the exposure time and/or wear hearing protection. Measure Up and Turn it Down: Decibel Levels Around Us The following are decibel levels of common noise sources around us. These are typical levels, however, actual noise levels may vary depending on the particular item. Remember noise levels above 85 dBA will harm hearing over time. Noise levels above 140dBA can cause damage to hearing after just one exposure.

This document was followed by the Commissioner’s speech in Copenhagen in 1998 , and lead to a comprehensive set of measures, including:
  • The creation of a Noise Expert Network , whose mission is to assist the Commission in the development of its noise policy. A new Directive on Environmental Noise aimed at requiring competent authorities in Member States to produce strategic noise maps on the basis of harmonised indicators, to inform the public about noise exposure and its effects, and to draw up action plans to address noise issues. The Directive on Equipment Used Outdoors that simplifies the legislation about many noisy equipments.

    is more than just a pain in the ear... it is harmful to your health.
    Here's How Noise Hurts:
    Continued exposure to noise damages your hearing. The louder the noise, the less time it takes to cause hearing loss. Cells of the inner ear are destroyed, and hearing deteriorates each time we are exposed to prolonged intense sound. The cells do not regenerate: Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and incurable. It is, however, preventable. 1 out of 8 Americans suffers from some degree of hearing impairment. Noise Hurts Children, too!
    The loud music that children listen to on the radio, on stereos and earphones, in discos, and at concerts impairs their hearing. Studies show that noise interferes with learning and lowers reading and math scores. Children will be deprived of these skills and will be partially deaf by the time they are grown unless we act to lessen noise.
    This delightful new book with 15 color illustrations introduces children to the delights of every day sounds through the antics of a young mouse, and alerts them to the bad sounds that can hurt their ears.

    INTRODUCTION
    Noise, defined as unwanted or excessive sound, is an undesirable by-product of our modern way of life. It can be annoying, can interfere with sleep, work, or recreation, and in extremes may cause physical and psychological damage. While noise emanates from many different sources, transportation noise is perhaps the most pervasive and difficult source to avoid in society today. Highway traffic noise is a major contributor to overall transportation noise. A broad-based effort is needed to control transportation noise. This effort must achieve the goals of personal privacy and environmental quality while continuing the flow of needed transportation services for a quality society.

    FOREWORD
    Noise is an important environmental consideration for highway planners and designers. It can annoy and cause psychological or physiological harm, depending on frequency characteristics and loudness. The U.S. Department of Transportation and State transportation agencies are charged with the responsibility of optimizing compatibility of highway operations with environmental concerns. Highway noise problems have been addressed by numerous investigations, including evaluations of the following:
  • noise sources and highway noise reference energy mean emission levels;

Protection Specific Noise Environments To understand noise and its effects on people, we need to understand specific noise environments. Depending upon the intensity of the sound, the length of time and how often over time the ear is exposed to it, noise affects our human condition in a number of ways from increased stress levels to permanent hearing loss. Excessive noise exists in our homes, in our workplaces and in our recreational pursuits. Many environmental noise levels are unacceptable and on the increase. Rather than working to simply maintain noise levels and stop the increase of noise, efforts must be made to decrease noise both on and off the job. Urban (City) Noise "It's a jungle out there." Our urban environment is crowded, busy and noisy! Jackhammers pounding, sirens whining, alarms ringing, subway trains screeching, aircraft zooming overhead, car horns honking - these are but a few of the annoying and potentially hazardous sounds that city dwellers are almost constantly exposed to.

    Transportation planning and project development must reflect the desires of communities, and take into account the impacts on both the natural and human environments. Transportation projects are closely looked at to see how they might impact the community, the natural environment, and our health and welfare. Before any project can move forward to construction, the FHWA must address and comply with laws related to the environment. These laws cover social, economic, and environmental concerns ranging from community cohesion to threatened and endangered species. To get through this detailed process, FHWA and FTA use the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process to evaluate impacts associated with each individual project. Two Offices within the Federal Highway Administration focus on environmental protection and enhancement. The Office of Natural and Human Environment primarily focuses on environmental programs associated with air quality, noise, and water quality, and on programs associated with the built environment, including transportation enhancements, bicycle and pedestrian facilities and scenic byways. The Office of Project Development and Environmental Review focuses on NEPA project development process as a balanced and streamlined approach to transportation decisionmaking that takes into account the potential impacts on both human and natural resources and the public's need for safe and efficient transportation improvements. Information regarding the full range of FHWA environmental programs can be found on this website. If you don't see the topic you are looking for, check our

    The hazardous substance deca-BDE has been detected for the first time in polar bears and glaucous gulls in the Arctic . Deca-BDE is one of about 70 brominated flame retardants. The discovery is disturbing, because researchers had earlier thought that the substance could not be transported over long distances.
