Abstract. We describe a new data-mining platform, CDMS, aimed at the streamlined development, comparison and application of machine learning tools. We discuss its type system, focussing on the treatment of statistical models as first-class values. This allows rapid construction of composite models - complex models built from simpler ones - such as mixture models, Bayesian networks and decision trees. We illustrate this with a flexible decision tree tool for CDMS which rather than being limited to discrete target attributes, can model any kind of data using arbitrary probability distributions. springer springer 8% GST subsidy on textbooks ended by the Fed' Gov'. 1 July+ students will pay 10% GST on textbooks. window on the wide world:

SIERRA CLUB JOINS ROBERT KENNEDY, JR., REP. PALLONE AND COALFIELD RESIDENTS TO DEMAND CLEAN WATER PROTECTIONS Environmental and Citizen Groups Oppose Bush Administration's Misguided Stream Proposal Washington, DC - The Sierra Club today joined Robert Kennedy, Jr., U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), coalfield residents, and other environmental and citizen groups at a public hearing to protest a Bush administration proposal that would allow mining companies to blow the tops of off mountains and dump the waste directly into Appalachian streams. The administration's proposal seeks to amend a 1983 "buffer zone rule" that currently prevents mining waste from being dumped within 100 feet of streams. The current rule, which is part of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), imposes the restrictions on mining companies that engage in the controversial practice of mountaintop removal mining. The U.S. Department of the Interior held public hearings on the proposal today in Washington, DC, Charleston, WV, Greentree, PA, Hazard, KY, and Harriman, TN, to gather comments about the Bush administration's plan. The public comment period on the proposal ends on April 7.

"GPS Drill Navigation and Data Collection in a Mining Environment"
ION GPS 2000. Salt Lake City, Utah. September 19-22, 2000. The author compares the old manual methods of drill pattern surveying and data collection with the new methods made possible by the implementation of GPS surveying and automated data collection. He describes these new methods and several payback scenarios achieved by the mine using the Aquila system. Using the drill as the surveyor, the mine saved $26,000 per year and now can consistently drill holes to the proper depth. Improper drilling costs almost $200/hole. In summary, these advanced methods eliminate much of the guesswork in the drilling and blasting process, enhancing mine efficiency in both surveying and fragmentation. Under-Mining Environmental Protection in Ontario?
by Tony Weis Sound confusing? While the thought of a quarry in a conservation area may seem paradoxical, this prospect is the predictable outcome of Ontario's Living Legacy settlement, and has the potential to re-define what environmental protection means throughout the province. As such, environmentalists across Ontario have their attention squarely set on Mellon Lake, which they are viewing with a combination of anger and fear. Located about 30 kilometres north of Napanee, the Mellon Lake Conservation Reserve is a very important natural area. Although relatively small (5,540 hectares), its forests and wetlands are home to a number of rare or significant species, such as the little prickly pear cactus (opuntia fragilis), roughly 1,000 kilometres away from the next closest colony, and the five-lined skink, Ontario's only lizard and a species that has recently been designated as vulnerable.

In June 2002, we convened the ‘ Tunnel Vision: Women, Mining and Communities ’ forum in Melbourne, Australia and later produced an anthology of the same name. Oxfam Community Aid Abroad is not opposed to mining, but believes that this activity should only be undertaken in accordance with the rights reaffirmed by the international human rights system, particularly the right of men and women from communities to prior free and informed consent to both exploration and mining activities.

    1. The Issue
Mining has been an important sector of the Peruvian economy since the Spanish Conquest. Traditionally it has contributed about half of the Country's export revenue. After over twenty years of isolation from direct foreign investment, the mining scene is changing. Political and economic stability have brought renewed interest in Peru as a resource rich investment opportunity for foreign companies. Peru has also been very active in pursuing foreign exploration partners and mining joint ventures through a variety of incentives and the removal of restrictions. The mining industry boom is exemplified by the excavation of iron resources. The purchase in late 1992 of the state iron producer by the Shougang Corporation of China resulted in an immediate 35% increase in iron output by the year 1993. As other entrants to the iron mining promise to flood this market, long neglected environmental issues, both past and present, must be confronted by the Peruvian government.

AI Lab Personnel Project Summary Recent advances in high throughput (and often automated or semi-automated) data acquisition technologies, digital storage technologies, computers and communications have made it possible to gather and store large amounts of data on plants. As a result, research groups are generating large volumes of data. In order to translate these advances in high-throughput data acquisition into fundamental gains in scientific understanding calls for development of software tools that allow integrated retrieval and analysis of the individual databases. The design and implementation of such tools has to address several challenges in computer and information sciences:
    • In many instances, the data sources are physically distributed (e.g., at multiple laboratories and data repositories). This calls for the use of
