Hazardous Waste Directory for Businesses
The most common hazardous wastes generated by building owners and managers are paint and oil. You may have a variety of other chemicals to handle, depending on specific operations in your building, the type of tenants, and your arrangements with construction companies, painting and decorating contractors, and janitorial companies. Whether you generate paint, oil, or other chemical wastes in the course of managing the building or find some of these wastes left behind, you become responsible for making sure they are safely managed. Here are three options:
  • Hire a hazardous waste firm to pick up your waste. See the list below.
  • Transport small quantities to the VSQG Program if you qualify; call 415-330-1425 for information.
  • Donate good paint to a nonprofit organization. See paint exchange directory or call 415-355-3700.

Responsibilities
The University is responsible for the management of hazardous waste from point of generation to point of disposal. We need to protect people who work with our waste before and after it leaves UTS, minimise the amount of waste produced and reduce the impact of the waste on the environment. There are a number of laws All staff/students are responsible for following the procedures to dispose of waste safely and to minimise waste wherever possible. The Faculty/Unit waste contacts are responsible to coordinate waste disposal at the faculty level and provide information to relevant staff and students. Deans/Directors are responsible for nominating the waste contacts and supporting action to minimise the amount of waste produced. The EHS Branch is responsible for coordination of hazardous waste management at UTS, including:
  • liaising with the waste disposal contractor to arrange for the removal of waste from UTS
  • liaising with the waste contacts
  • paying for disposal of hazardous waste
  • providing plastic waste containers to generators of waste

Quick and Dirty Fact Sheet on Hazardous Waste
When most people hear of hazardous or toxic waste, they think of big oil spills or dumps of waste from big businesses. Very few think of their homes. Yet much of the hazardous waste going into our lands and waters is coming from our homes. Many of our cleaning products can be hazardous to the environment if improperly used or discarded. Some of the more common products we use that are potentially hazardous include: Bleach Disinfectant Window Cleaner Drain Cleaner Over Cleaner Furniture Polish Spot Remover Nail Polish Remover Hair Spray Car Polish Engine Degreaser Mothballs Bug Spray Flea Powder Turpentine Oil Based Paint Oil/Antifreeze Shoe Polish When we finish with these, the containers or remaining residue should not be dumped into our trash, down the sink or toilet or into storm drains. Containers and any remaining residue should be kept separate and disposed of properly. Some will need to be taken to a hazardous waste disposal collection site for transportation and proper disposal in a hazardous waste landfill. These landfills, specifically designed for hazardous waste, usually have a double liner and other safety precautions to keep the chemicals from seeping into the ground and contaminating water systems and plant life. In addition to proper disposal of hazardous waste, we need to consider using alternative materials that are not toxic. Some substitutions include:

CONTACT Categorias(category); SubCategorias(category, subcategory); In depth I Hazardous waste trafficking Industrialized countries generate an enormous volume of toxic waste, which is either impossible or extremely costly to recycle. The solution for many years has been to export it to third world countries who have more lenient environmental regulations, are in greater need of funds and where concern for the health of the population is minimum or non-existent. Following several waste trafficking related scandals in the 1980’s, on March 22, 1989, the Basel Convention was adopted, with the goal of controlling movement and disposal of all kinds of toxic and hazardous waste.
Initially the Convention -in force as of May 5, 1992- was criticized by environmental groups because it failed to effectively ban toxic waste exports to poor countries, succeeding only in excluding Antarctica as a destination for such waste. In 1995, however, and as a result of pressure exerted by several countries and environmental groups, an amendment to the Convention was introduced, prohibiting all exports of contaminating material. This ban will only enter into force when the amendment is ratified by 62 of the countries party to the Convention (as of May 2003, 36 countries had already done so). In any event, the scope of the Convention is severely limited by the fact that the United States, the largest toxic residue producer in the world, is not among the signatories.

In 1999, Norway generated 631000 tonnes of hazardous waste. More than 90 per cent of this was delivered to approved treatment facilities. This still leaves 50000 tonnes that escaped proper treatment, 20000 tonnes more than in 1994.

Statistics Norway estimates that about 631.000 tonnes of hazardous waste were generated in Norway in 1999. The fate of about 50.000 tonnes are unknown, and may well have escaped proper treatment. The 50.000 tonnes of missing hazardous waste include the following:
    • about 33.000 tonnes of waste oil and other oily waste
    • 6.700 tonnes of demolition waste containing PCB
    • 5.800 tonnes of solvents
    • studies suggest that a typical Norwegian household generates about 4 kg hazardous waste per head per year, and that 20-50 per cent of it is collected by the municipal refuse service.
The graph below shows that about 600.000 tonnes of hazardous waste undergo controlled treatment.

    Program Goal
Minimize public and environmental health threats that result from improper disposal of hazardous waste.
Boulder County investigates citizen complaints of illegal handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste, as per Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment(CDPHE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. We do not have authority to investigate employee/worker health and safety complaints. Employee/worker health and safety complaints should be directed to the Occupational Safety and Health Association(OSHA) at 303-844-5285.
Boulder County Public Health assists Boulder County Government in identifying and minimizing hazardous waste generation and substituting less hazardous alternatives. This project, in its third year, increases efficiencies; improves worker health and safety; and reduces waste to water, land, and air.
Boulder County Public Health collaborates with the Boulder County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, the Boulder County Recycling and Composting Authority, and promotes the use of pollution prevention options in place of hazardous home chemicals.

The Department of the Environment and Heritage administers and implements the Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1989 ('the Act'). The Act was developed to enable Australia to comply with specific obligations under the Basel Convention (Basel Convention on the Control of the Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their disposal), a Convention set up to control the international movements of hazardous wastes. The main functions performed by the Department of the Environment and Heritage in relation to hazardous waste include:
    • Processing of export, import and transit permit applications under the Act; Ensuring compliance and enforcement with the Act; Preparing, implementing and amending legislation relating to the international movements of hazardous waste to, from or through Australia; Formulating and implementing policies relating to the international movements of hazardous waste to, from or through Australia;
