Global environmental change and health
Large-scale and global environmental hazards to human health include climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, loss of biodiversity, changes in hydrological systems and the supplies of freshwater, land degradation and stresses on food-producing systems. Appreciation of this scale and type of influence on human health requires a new perspective which focuses on ecosystems and on the recognition that the foundations of long-term good health in populations rely in great part on the continued stability and functioning of the biosphere's life-supporting systems. It also brings an appreciation of the complexity of the systems upon which we depend. FURTHER INFORMATION Climate change and health

The Global Environmental Change and Human Security Project Office at UCI (GECHS-UCI) was established in 1999 to explore the ways in which environmental change affects the lives and welfare of individuals and groups around the world, especially in developing countries. In 2003, GECHS-UCI was incorporated into the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs (CUSA) at UCI. GECHS-UCI's research and fieldwork on environmental security issues will be a a core project of CUSA. News and Events UPDATE! Occasional papers about unconventional security issues are available at the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs (CUSA) website. Nils Petter Gleditsch, will present "A Resource Curse? Scarcity and Abundance as Causes of Conflict." Thursday, January 22, 2004, 10:00 am in 408 MPAA Building. We participated in the "Conference on Environment, Conflict, and Cooperation: Gaps and Opportunities for Research and Policy Agendas" December 3-5, 2003. This event was held at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC and was co-sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme’s Division of Early Warning and Assessment and the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Environmental Change and Security Project. On November 10, Bryan McDonald presented on “The Controversy over Biotech Food: Implications for Science, Politics and Security” at 12:00 noon in SE I room 225.

Closure of the UK GER Office - 31 March 1998
The Global Environmental Research Office was established in 1990 in recognition of the growing national and international interest in GER issues and the need to coordinate UK responses to research opportunities and challenges across Research Council disciplinary boundaries. From the start it was recognised that as new communities and networks became established, the requirement for central coordination would alter in its nature. The Heads of Research Councils (HORC's) decided that the Office should close on 31 March 1998. However, they recognised that as GER has expanded to address impacts and solutions as well as detection and understanding of change, there would still be an ongoing need to coordinate global change activities across Research Councils within existing mechanisms. A cross-Council working group has been established to consider this and to put proposals to HORC's in April 1998. Only the following publications and information are still accessible from this Website:

The research unit Sustainability and Global Change is devoted to multi-disciplinary research and education on human-induced environmental change that is either global in nature or pervasive across the world. Our research aims to further the understanding of sustainable development and its constituents environmental quality, economic efficiency and social equity. We seek to cross-fertilise disciplines by building bridges between the natural and social sciences. staff offers courses in the economics of environmental resource management to both students of economics and students of other disciplines. Research and education are organised in a number of cooperative networks The Research unit is financially supported by the Michael Otto Foundation for Environmental Protection , the EU DG Research , the Hamburg Ministry for Science and Research , the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research , the Volkswagen Foundation , the Zeit Foundation and the Max Planck Society Semiannual Reports April 2003-October 2003 October 2002-March 2003

Global Warming Trends Atmospheric Change ... Science FAQ
Climate
An Introduction uncertainties exist about exactly how earth's climate responds to them. Go to the Emissions section for much more on greenhouse gases Our Changing Atmosphere Energy from the sun drives the earth's weather and climate, and heats the earth's surface; in turn, the earth radiates energy back into space. Atmospheric greenhouse gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases) trap some of the outgoing energy, retaining heat somewhat like the glass panels of a greenhouse.
Without this natural "greenhouse effect," temperatures would be much lower than they are now, and life as known today would not be possible. Instead, thanks to greenhouse gases, the earth's average temperature is a more hospitable 60°F. However, problems may arise when the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases increases.
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased nearly 30%, methane concentrations have more than doubled, and nitrous oxide concentrations have risen by about 15%. These increases have enhanced the heat-trapping capability of the earth's atmosphere. Sulfate aerosols, a common air pollutant, cool the atmosphere by reflecting light back into space; however, sulfates are short-lived in the atmosphere and vary regionally.
Why are greenhouse gas concentrations increasing? Scientists generally believe that the combustion of fossil fuels and other human activities are the primary reason for the increased concentration of carbon dioxide. Plant respiration and the decomposition of organic matter release more than 10 times the CO

President Bush takes a walk among wild flowers at his Ranch in Crawford, Texas, May 23, 2003. The President and Mrs. Bush are replacing planted grass and landscaping by re-introducing the natural local fauna. “. . .we're right now cultivating 50 acres of little blue stem which was the original prairie grass that would have been there,” said Laura Bush of their efforts during the 2004 Spring White House Garden Tour preview. President Announces Wetlands Initiative on Earth Day
Wetlands Initiative Promotes Increase Each Year
Today's Presidential Action
  • President Bush celebrated Earth Day in Wells, Maine, where he visited with volunteers helping protect a wetland that is home to abundant wildlife and helps cleanse water reaching the Atlantic Ocean.
New figures released today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture show that, for the first time in history, America has reversed the annual net loss of wetlands on our farms. The United States was losing almost 500,000 acres of wetlands per year 30 years ago, but today, that loss is down dramatically. Overall, we are nearing the national goal of .no net loss. of wetlands reaffirmed by President Bush in 2002.
