CIESIN Thematic Guides
OZONE DEPLETION
AND GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
Welcome to the CIESIN thematic guide on ozone depletion issues. The purpose of this guide is to help you find selected key documents that pertain to the issue of ozone depletion: causes, human and environmental effects, and policy responses. The 1985 report of the discovery of an "ozone hole" over Antarctica focused attention on the idea that humans can have a significant impact on the global environment. This discovery, along with evidence that ozone is being lost at nearly all latitudes outside the tropics, has prompted much research into the causes of ozone depletion and the biological effects of increased ultraviolet radiation exposure. The potential effects on humans and the environment have led to international resolutions designed to gradually phase out production of ozone-depleting substances. As a result, the scientific and industrial communities have collaborated to find safe and economical replacements for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), the manmade chemicals implicated in ozone loss. This guide contains an Overview that provides general background on key concepts and issues related to ozone depletion. In addition, four subsections explore selected topics in greater detail:

http://www.ihdp.uni-bonn.de/
About IHDP The International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP) was initially launched in 1990 by the International Social Science Council (ISSC) as the Human Dimensions Programme (HDP). In February 1996, the International Council for Science (ICSU) joined ISSC as co-sponsor of the Programme. At this time, the name of the Programme was changed to IHDP, and the Secretariat was moved to Bonn, Germany, through a generous grant from the German government. IHDP is an international, interdisciplinary, non-governmental science programme dedicated to promoting and co-ordinating research. Its aims are to describe, analyse and understand the human dimensions of global environmental change. IHDP's programme is designed around its three main objectives of research, capacity building and networking. Increasingly these activities are carried out in collaboration with the international partner programmes on global environmental change: the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the

Global warming is real and underway The mainstream scientific consensus on global warming is becoming clearer every day: changes in our climate are real and they are underway. Now. But we can do something about it. The evidence that human-induced global warming is real is increasingly clear and compelling.

  • Warming in the 20th century is greater than at any time during the past 400-600 years.
    offsite
    trend chart
In addition, changes in the natural environment support the evidence from temperature records:
  • mountain glaciers the world over are receding;
    the Arctic ice pack has lost about 40% of its thickness over the past four decades;
    the global sea level is rising about three times faster over the past 100 years compared to the previous 3,000 years; and
    there are a growing number of studies that show plants and animals changing their range and behavior in response to shifts in climate.

As the Earth continues to warm, there is a growing risk that the climate will change in ways that will seriously disrupt our lives. While on average the globe will get warmer and receive more precipitation, individual regions will experience different climatic changes and environmental impacts. Among the most severe consequences of global warming are:
  • a faster rise in sea level

About the Phytotron Strategic Plan Upgrades and renovations The National Phytotron is a controlled environment facility located on the Duke University campus. It houses 48 plant growth chambers and six controlled greenhouses a total of over 450 square meters of growth space and associated instrumentation and laboratories. Established in 1968 with funds from Duke and the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Phytotron was designed by leading scientists in controlled environment (CE) research and technology. The operation and maintenance of the Phytotron continues to be supported by both Duke and NSF in order to provide state-of-the-art CE technology at an affordable price to scientists in a variety of disciplines. Welcome to the Global Environmental Change Programme, the largest ever social science research initiative in the UK on any issue.
The main feature of this web site is a set of three documents. These summarise, in an accessible form, the most important insights to have emerged from our research. The documents, which can be accessed by clicking on the images below, are organised around the following themes: You can read the preface to the three documents here . There are also PDF versions of the three documents and you can also view a short video documentary on each of the three themes. This site is also an archive of more detailed information about the Programme, with full search facilities. This includes:
  • one page summaries of each of the 150 empirical research projects and Fellowships details of over 1000 publications that have been produced as a result of the research Programme responses to Government consultations and Parliamentary inquiries and a host of other material.
