Rainforests are very dense, warm, wet forests. They are havens for millions of plants and animals. Rainforests are extremely important in the ecology of the Earth. The plants of the rainforest generate much of the Earth's oxygen. These plants are also very important to people in other ways; many are used in new drugs that fight disease and illness. Where are Rainforests? Tropical rainforests are located in a band around the equator Go to a rainforest map printout to color
Strata of the Rainforest

Different animals and plants live in different parts of the rainforest. Scientists divide the rainforest into strata (zones) based on the living environment. Starting at the top, the strata are:
  • EMERGENTS : Giant trees that are much higher than the average canopy height. It houses many birds and insects.

    I. Rainforests: What they are and where they're found...

There are two types of rainforests: tropical and temperate.
Tropical rainforests are found in 85 countries around the world. "Ninety percent of these forests are concentrated into fifteen countries, each country containing over 10 million hectares each." (Malaysian Timber Council, 1995) Tropical rainforests are located near the equator, where temperatures stay above 80 degrees Fahrenheit year round. These dense, damp forests occur in Latin and South America, Africa, and in Southeast Asia. "Although they [tropical rainforests] cover just seven percent of the Earth’s surface, they can provide habitat for between 50 and 90 percent of its plant and animal species. In 1990, tropical rainforests totaled some 1.7 billion hectares." (Forest Alliance of British Columbia, 1996) Half of the world’s rainforests lie within the borders of Brazil, Indonesia, and Zaire.
A tropical rainforest has three layers: the forest floor, the understory, and the canopy. The forest floor has poor soil. Mainly insects live on this layer, although large mammals like gorillas and jaguars are also found there. Many smaller animals, including anteaters, lemurs, and tree kangaroos live in the understory. This is also where many small trees and shrubs are found. The canopy, or top layer, is made up of the tops of trees which can grow to be over 200 feet high. Many tropical birds, monkeys, apes, snakes, and other animals live in the canopy.

    Rainforests of the World
Rain forests are like an undiscovered world encircling the globe. They occur in a belt around and near the equator between 20 degrees north latitude and 20 degrees south latitude. The forests are mainly found in Africa, Hawaii, the Philippines and the largest ecosystem of them all is situated in South America. Different countries have different types of rainforests. African rainforests have their own qualitites. Even though every rainforest on the continent of Africa is different they all have similar qualitites. African rainforests are shorter than other rainforests of the world and are less dense. These qualitites make it easier for elephants to travel through these forests. The largest rainforests left in the world are in Central and South America. The Amazonia rainforests of Brazil is home to many unique creatures like the pink river dolphin and the giant armadillo. Asian rainforests resemble huge lollipop orchards and range from the west coast ofIndia to Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea and some of the tropical islands of the Pacific. Here animals like orangoutans and macaques live among the huge trees of these rainforests.

WHAT IS A RAINFOREST Rainforests are the Earth's oldest living ecosystems.
They are so amazing and beautiful.
These incredible places cover only of the Earth's surface but yet they contain MORE THAN 1/2 of the world's plant and animal species!
A Rainforest can be described as a tall, dense jungle. The reason it is called a "rain" forest is because of the high amount of rainfall it gets per year. The climate of a rain forest is very hot and humid so the animals and plants that exist there must learn to adapt to this climate.
Rainforests basically have four layers to them.
As many as 30 million species of plants and animals live in tropical rainforests.
At least two-thirds of the world's plant species, including many exotic and beautiful flowers grow in the rainforests. Rainforests are the source of many items that we all use in our own homes!
We eat several foods from the rainforest and many medicines are made from ingredients found only in these areas. Some of the common products we know of include:
    • chocolate sugar cinnamon rubber medicine pineapples

Forests that receive more than seventy-eight inches of rain throughout the year are generally considered rainforests. There are as many as thirty or forty different types of rainforests, including evergreen lowland forests, evergreen mountain forests, tropical evergreen alluvial forests, and semi-deciduous forests. All rainforests, however, can be broadly classified as either tropical or temperate rainforests.
Tropical rainforests are found in a large belt around the equator, where temperatures and rainfall are high year-round. [more]

      The Disappearing Rainforests
      • We are losing Earth's greatest biological treasures just as we are beginning to appreciate their true value. Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years One and one-half acres of rainforest are lost every second with tragic consequences for both developing and industrial countries. Rainforests are being destroyed because the value of rainforest land is percieved as only the value of its timber by short-sighted governments, multi-national logging companies, and land owners. Nearly half of the world's species of plants, animals and microoganisms will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next quarter century due to Rainforest deforestation. Experts estimates that we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That equates to 50,000 species a year. As the rainforest species dissapear, so do many possible cures for life-threatening diseases. Currently, 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources. While 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients, less that 1% of these tropical trees and plants have been tested by scientists. Most rainforests are cleared by chainsaws, bulldozers and fires for its timber value and then are followed by farming and ranching operations, even by world giants like Mitsubishi Corporation, Gerogia Pacific, Texaco and Unocal.
