San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge Visual Assessment
The following visual simulations are taken from the Visual Impact Assessment which was prepared as part of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the East Span Seismic Safety Project. These simulations show the possible East Span alignment alternatives and design variations which are evaluated in the DEIS. The Visual Impact Assessment quantifies the visual impact that the bridge variations would have in the larger visual context of the Bay Area. The visual simulations typically show the alignment alternative (either N6 or S4) which is closest to each viewpoint. If, however, the alignment dramatically affects the views from that location, both alignments are shown. For each location shown, you can view:

  • The Skyway Design Variation
  • The Signature Bridge Design Variation (either Suspension Bridge or Cable-Stayed Bridge)

    Environmental Assessment
Environmental assessment is a procedure that ensures that the environmental implications of decisions are taken into account before the decisions are made. The process involves an analysis of the likely effects on the environment, recording those effects in a report, undertaking a public consultation exercise on the report, taking into account the comments and the report when making the final decision and informing the public about that decision afterwards. In principle, environmental assessment can be undertaken for individual projects such as a dam, motorway, airport or factory (‘Environmental Impact Assessment’) or for plans, programmes and policies (‘Strategic Environmental Assessment’). This website provides information on the European Community’s laws on Environmental Impact Assessment of projects and the Environmental Assessment of certain plans and programmes together with other related information. Statement of Qualifications
VFL has over 30 years of experience in the performance of environmental studies and designs. VFL has been a leader in this area having performed the first environmental studies in Pennsylvania after passage of the national Environmental Policy Act. Beginning with the studies conducted for the Pottstown Expressway in 1970 and continuing today with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Schuylkill River Bridge and Diamond Run Viaduct Widening Project, VFL has performed quality environmental analyses for over twenty-five transportation facility projects. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT VFL has successfully completed several Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) or Environmental Assessments (EA) as a part of the transportation project planning and development process. In addition to the EIS or EA document, technical basis reports, prepared by VFL typically included the following:
    • Socioeconomic and Land Use
    • Historical and Archaeological Investigation
    • Natural Resources
    • Farmland Assessment
    • Wetland Identification and Delineation With Joint Permit Application
    • Noise and Air Quality
    • Hazardous Waste Site Investigation
    • Section 4(f) Evaluation
    • Public Involvement
VFL's expertise in environmental engineering is demonstrated by our presence as the environmental subconsultant on the team that won the 1991 Excellence in Highway Design Award in Historical, Archeological and Environmental Highway project in an Urban Area category for our work on the Mid-County Expressway (I-476).
