an interdisciplinary project as a consequence of its focus on scientific interfaces between chemistry, biology, biochemistry and ecotoxicology. The goal of this research programme is to evaluate the potential of using biological marker determined in marine organisms as a means of assessment of chemical contamination and to investigate the socioeconomic implications for certain selected zones.

BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS of ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION in Marine Coastal Ecosystems Contract n° EVK3-CT2000-00025 4 PhD scolarships available in Marine Risk Assessment 6th POSTGRADUATE COURSE (University of the Basque Country) POST DOC POSITION OFFER MEMBERS AREA THE PROJECT Contamination of coastal environment by chemical contaminants such as hydrocarbons ( oil spills, wastes ), pesticides ( crop treatment ), heavy metals and various organic pollutants in dredged sediments and waste waters is a major environmental concern.
Biological effects monitoring is an important element in management and monitoring Programes which aim at assessing the quality of the marine environment. Such a monitoring approach is able to detect links between contaminants and ecological responses.
Biological effects monitoring was identified as a topic of common interest by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea ( ICES ), European Environment Agency ( EEA ), Helsinki Commission (

Overview
(up)
Toxicology, chemistry and ecology issues pertinent to the marine and estuarine habitats of the Southeastern U. S. are the focus of Marine Ecotoxicology. A major goal is to establish linkages between land use and the presence of chemical contaminants in the marine environment. Interdisciplinary research is focused on identifying chemical and bacterial contaminants associated with anthropogenic inputs from agriculture, urbanization, dredging operations, and industrial discharges and their resulting toxicological and ecological impacts on marine and estuarine ecosystems.

Welcome to the ECOTOX site within the section of
at the dept. of Ecology (inaugurated by His Majesty the King of Sweden , Nov 1994) , Lund University
in , the most southern region of Sweden.
Chemical ecology and ecotoxicology deals with the chemical background of interactions between organisms, between organisms and their environment, and the influence of chemical factors on the dynamics of populations and ecosystems. The aim is to describe relationships in ecosystems and predict and evaluate changes caused either by natural or anthropogenic compounds.
Scientific expertise covers chemical, ecological and taxonomical disciplines as well as methodology from micro-scale laboratory methods to large-scale outdoor experimentation. The section has well-equipped chemical analytical laboratories with heavy instrumentation such as gas-chromatograph, mass-spectrometers, liquid-chromatograph and electrophores equipments. http://www.ecetoc.org/entry.htm
ECETOC is a chemicals industry association, providing a scientific forum through which specialist expertise is harnessed to research, review, assess and publish studies on the ecotoxicology and toxicology of chemicals
ECETOC (European Centre for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals) was established in 1978 and is a scientific, non-profit making, non-commercial association, financed by 50 of the leading companies with interests in the manufacture and use of chemicals. A stand-alone organisation, it was established to provide a scientific forum through which the extensive specialist expertise in the European chemical industry could be harnessed to research, review, assess and publish studies on the ecotoxicology and toxicology of chemicals.
The Association’s main objective is to identify, evaluate and through such knowledge help industry minimise, any potentially adverse effects on health and the environment that may arise from the manufacture and use of chemicals. To achieve this mission, ECETOC facilitates the networking of suitably qualified scientists from its member companies and co-operates in a scientific context with intergovernmental agencies, health authorities and professional institutions.

    http://www.bio.vu.nl/do/ecotoxicology/
In the Ecotoxicology section , research is focused on the analysis of the response of soil invertebrates to toxicants in soil. Research involves the investigation of uptake routes, internal distribution and effects of toxicants in these organisms and the relation between internal concentrations and effects. Main aim is to unravel the mechanisms organisms use to cope with toxicants and the genetic variability in such mechanisms between populations. On the basis of results from fundamental research, instruments are developed for the assessment of possible ecosystem effects in cases of soil pollution. Finally, research aims at establishing a relationship between effects of toxicants at the individual level and the response of populations and ecosystems. Research projects involve studies on uptake and effects on individual, population and community level in connection with abiotic conditions (including the development of toxicity tests), studies on the physiological effects of PAHs and heavy metals for soil invertebrates related to factors like metabolism and energy budgets and research on the development of biomarkers and on the background and consequences of (genetic) adaptation to heavy metals.
