About the UNEP Biodiversity Programme
What issues does the Biodiversity Programme Address?
The accelerating loss of biological diversity is undermining sustainable development opportunities worldwide, eroding genes, species and ecosystems that constitute important resources and support systems to human well-being. The challenge is to identify the real socio-economic causes and impacts of changes in biodiversity, and to develop strategic means to use the components of biological diversity in ways which do not lead to their long term decline whilst contributing to increasing production functions which underpin human progress. These issues are the focus of Element 1.2 of the UNEP Programme of Work for 1996-97
How does the Biodiversity Unit operate?
The UNEP Biodiversity Unit addresses four main issues, namely:
  • Biotechnology and Biosafety,
  • Biodiversity Strategy,
  • Forests and other Ecosystems
  • Ecosystem Conservation
Its main focus is on the further development and application of integrated approaches for conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity to support the achievement of sustainable development. This integration is being guided by the sustainability concept in the use of natural resources and by a clearer understanding of the critical inter-linkages within major environmental issues related to sustainable use of all types of forests and other ecosystems, including fragile ones; prevention of soils degradation and wildlife and protected areas management. The integration of biodiversity in other programmes such as freshwater resources, environmental economics, environmental assessment and monitoring, global resource information database, environmental law, ocean and coastal areas, and information are important part of the new UNEP approach, all this in a context of regional delivery of services.

Highlights Biodiversity and Environmental Assessment
Biodiversity
The World Bank is the world's largest financier of biodiversity. Over the last decade, World Bank funding for biodiversity has involved over 226 projects with about US$1.0 billion of IBRD/IDA resources, over US$450 million of GEF funds and an additional US$1.2 billion in co-funding from other donors, governments, NGOs, foundations and the private sector - a total Bank-managed biodiversity portfolio of US$2.6 billion.
Since 2000, a rapidly growing number of 'fast track' projects (involving medium-sized GEF grants) has added strength, innovation and diversity to the portfolio, and has enhanced the Bank's ability to engage new partners. Analytical tools and skills allow us to measure the extent of resource use, translate it into economic and social impact terms, and over time monitor the state of environmental resources and the benefits they generate. Methodological toolkits also seek to improve the quality with which biodiversity is dealt with in environmental assessments. All these activities help to inform policy makers and guide those who design and implement development programs and projects.
World Bank support in the area of biodiversity involves the establishment and strengthening of protected areas (including activities in buffer zones), sustainable use of biodiversity outside protected areas, eradication of alien species, and biodiversity conservation through improved management and sustainable use of natural resources in the production landscape. All of these activities have important links to poverty alleviation initiatives. In the future, it is expected that the Bank's activities in support of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity will further emphasize mainstreaming of biodiversity in the production landscape, including agriculture, fisheries, and other rural development activities.

Research Focus
The Biodiversity and Livelihoods Group (BLG) aims to improve the livelihoods of the poor through sustainable and equitable management of biodiversity.
Millions of rural people depend on biodiversity for food, medicines, income, ecosystem services and cultural and spiritual needs. Access to biodiversity for these people is increasingly restricted as a result of both exclusionary conservation approaches and natural resource exploitation. Current development policies tend not to support biodiversity-based livelihoods.
BLG focuses
  • Linking biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction objectives.

Integrating Environmental and Population Variation: A Model for Biodiversity Studies (AMBIOS)
Areas of study:
  • The relationships between breeding ecology, niche width and biogeographic range, and their bearing on the future dynamics of biodiversity at a time of accelerating environmental change and extinction will be studied.
  • The development of operational concepts for assessing and describing the very basis of biodiversity will be established This will involve evaluating and comparing phenotypic and genotypic features as measures of the buffering capacity of the components of biodiversity with respect to changing environmental factors, and will be achieved by focusing on genetic heterogeneity levels and phenotypic responses in relation to the environment, and on thermal tolerance.
  • The determination of the mechanisms involved in the transition from polymorphic, interbreeding populations to those of species status, and the elucidation of how such changes can be distinguished from phenotypic plasticity, will be addressed.
  • Techniques for the identification of species and 'lower' taxonomic units will be developed, and new molecular methods tested in those species in which the levels of polymorphism are high.

Welcome to the Environment and Sustainable Development action for "Global Change, Climate and Biodiversity" Generic activities: natural and technological hazards and earth observation technologies European network for research into global change The aim of the Key Action on Global Change, Climate and Biodiversity under the Environment Programme of the Directorate General for Research is to develop the scientific, technological and socio-economic basis and tools necessary for the study and understanding of changes in the environment. It emphasises global and regional environmental problems that may have a significant impact on Europe, such as climate change, ozone depletion, biodiversity loss or loss of habitats and fertile land. Priority is given to issues covered by international treaties or conventions where the European Community or its Member States are signatories. Integration and synthesis across global change problems are receiving particular attention. Since the start of the European Commission's Environment Programme under the 5th Framework Programme (1998-2002), the research covered by this Key Action has brought about significant improvement in our understanding of causes and trends in Global Change, Climate and Biodiversity. This Key Action covers a range of research projects which are providing an input to international research programmes. They also help to underpin EU policies related to environmental conventions and treaties such as Kyoto Protocol, Montreal Protocol, Convention on Biological Diversity, Desertification Convention and the Air Pollution Convention.

The MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management will appeal to those wishing to develop the skills needed for a successful career in biodiversity conservation, management and research. more Introduction
Research carried out by members of the Biodiversity Research Group can broadly be defined as an examination of the characteristics, dynamics and impact of environmental change on biological systems. Our interests are diverse, but tend to focus on the response of species and ecosystems to fundamental environmental controls, and to changes in environments on time scales ranging from the ecological to the geological. Spatial scales addressed range from global to local. The group is made up of staff, postgraduate students, research associates and visitors of the Department of Geography and Environmental Change Institute. The group runs a weekly seminar series during full term. If you are Oxford based and would like to be included in our circulation list, please email
