AIR INFORMATION CENTER Today's Air Quality Ozone Forecast Ensuring the air is safe to breathe for all who live in and visit Maryland is a primary goal of the Maryland Department of the Environment. Air pollution contributes to illnesses , including cancer, detrimentally affects respiratory and reproductive systems and can cause mental impairment. Ground-level ozone daily ozone forecasts The national ambient (outdoor) air quality standards are established for six common pollutants that are produced in substantial quantities throughout the country - ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen, and lead. Maryland meets five of the six federal ambient air quality standards and is considered to be in attainment with respect to them. The exception is the low-level ozone standard. Control strategies include preventing and reducing emissions of air pollutants from stationary sources such as industries, utilities, and small businesses, and from mobile sources vehicle emissions ) through a variety of regulatory ( permitting and compliance ) and educational activities.

What's the air quality like where you live? Find out by following the Air Quality Monitoring link. You can find the location of air monitoring stations throughout the province and take a tour of the Mobile Air Monitoring Laboratory. Air Quality Models are an important part of the regulatory approval process to determine whether emissions from a facility, as designed, will not exceed the Ambient Air Quality Guidelines. Go to this link and you'll find the guidelines and more information about air quality modelling. Air Emissions Inventories are compilations of estimates of air pollutant releases. Use this link to view estimates of air pollutant emissions from industrial operations, transportation, and commercial and residential buildings. The Clean Air Strategic Alliance Data Warehouse is a central repository for air quality and ecological data collected by the provincial monitoring program in Alberta. Indoor Environmental Quality
Almost seventy percent of the U.S. work force approximately 89 million persons work in non-industrial, non-agricultural, indoor work settings, referred to here as indoor environments. In the last 20 years diseases and health complaints related to these indoor environments have received increasing attention. "Indoor Environmental Quality" refers to the interactions among many factors in indoor environments, including the quality of the air (e.g., air flow, the presence of chemical or microbiological agents), physical conditions such as temperature and humidity, ergonomic factors, and stressors from social/psychological or work organizational factors. The most common health complaints attributed by building occupants to their indoor environments are generally of nonspecific symptoms, such as eye, nose, throat, and skin irritation, headache, and fatigue. Specific causal exposures or known diseases usually cannot be linked to these complaints. Available evidence relates these acute symptoms to multiple factors in the indoor environment. NIOSH investigators have found IEQ problems caused by ventilation system deficiencies, overcrowding, offgassing from materials in the office and mechanical equipment, tobacco smoke, excessive moisture, microbiological contamination (e.g., mold), and outside air pollutants.

The goal of the Air Quality Program is to achieve and maintain reasonable levels of air quality to protect human health, safety and welfare and the National Ambient Air Quality Standards established through the Federal Clean Air Act. The department implements this goal by staffing ambient air monitoring and permitting sections. To determine the quality of our air, we conduct ambient air monitoring at potentially high air pollution areas across the state. Once an air quality problem is identified, it is addressed by the rulemaking process, permitting process , or outside of the regulatory process. We permit minor, Part 70 (Title V), Acid Rain, and PSD sources. There are no nonattainment areas in South Dakota, therefore, we do not issue NSR permits.

In a January 2004 letter, Reps. Barbara Cubin (R-WY) and Jim Gibbons (R-NV) accused EPA of inappropriately linking to web sites of extremist groups, including the Environmental Defense Scorecard and OMB Watch's RTKNet. Read the article
EPA's current policy lauds the use of external links as an efficient way to use other resources and foster an electronic environmental community. It is unclear if the letter from Cubin and Gibbons will influence how EPA views links to such pages as RTKNET or Scorecard.
