Soil and Environment Activities
The following activities are designed for you to study how sol and the environment affects agriculture. Try some or try all of the tasks. Some of these ideas are taken from the Agriculture Saskatchewan series by Saskatchewan Education.
Activity 1: Soil Texture Recognizing soil texture and its related characteristics is very important in production decisions made by producers every year. Obtain dry samples of sand, silt and clay. Record your findings in a journal writing format.
Using the samples of sand, silt and clay, rub a pinch of each between the thumb and forefinger? Which is the smoothest? the coarsest?
Place a pinch of one of the samples in the palm of one hand and add two drops of water from an eyedropper. Use the forefinger of the other hand to mix the water with the soil. Describe how the sample feels when wet. Repeat with the other two samples.
Place no more than three to five grains of salt in the palm of one hand. Using an eyedropper, add five drops of liquid laundry starch. Use the forefinger of the other hand to mix the salt and liquid starch. Add three drops of white glue and mix. Compare this mixture to the mixtures produced in part B. Add two more grains of salt and mix. Describe the effect of adding more salt.

Multi-Billion Dollar Mississippi River Plan Slammed
A coalition of environmental, agriculture and taxpayer groups detail fundamental flaws in a $2.3 billion proposal to expand locks on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers. A new report, Twice Cooked Pork: The Upper Mississippi River-Illinois Waterway Navigation Study, concludes that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers revised study is based on "an unprecedented combination of mistakes, miscalculations and misstatements." Increasing navigation efficiency
through non-structural measures
Proponents of navigation expansion have long maintained that the only way to eliminate traffic delays on the Mississippi River is to expand the locks, a project that would cost over $2 billion, take decades to complete and do little to benefit small farmers, rural communities or the environment. On the contrary, a number of non-structural measures exist that would increase navigation efficiency immediately, cost much less to implement and better benefit everyone involved. Three new publications explore these non-structural measures.
  • Read the IATP press release
  • Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterways: How to Reduce Waiting Times of Vessels While Using the Current Infrastructure : A report by the University of Missouri-St. Louis' Center for Transportation Studies and commissioned by IATP examines the cause of traffic delays on the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers and recommends strategies for reducing these delays.

HERE! Home Calendar Jo Stuart ... About us Scammers use name of I.R.S. to steal data By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Another identity theft scam has surfaced in Costa Rica, and this time the Internet is not the source. A local real estate broker said he received a FAX transmission that said it was from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, the tax collecting agency. The document, identifying itself as I.R.S. Form W-8BEN, asked for such detailed personal information as bank account numbers, passport numbers, mother’s maiden name and Social Security number. The document is supposed to be the way foreigners and non-resident U.S. citizens report tax liability to the I.R.S. and the scammers have been known to warn recipients that a big penalty will be assessed if they do not fill out the form. In fact, the form is a doctored I.R.S. form, and the Utah telephone number to which it was supposed to be Faxed when completed is that of a scammer. The broker wasn’t fooled. He did an Internet search and found out that the scam has been around since 2002.

agriculture and the environment Introduction toagriculture and the environment.
http://www.agr.gc.ca/policy/environment/home_e.phtml
Canadians are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact agricultural practices can have on environmental and human health. Agriculture's long-term vitality and prosperity depend on its ability to co-exist sustainably with the natural environment. This involves a blending of environmental, social, and economic opportunities that strives to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Because of the many benefits associated with a consistent approach, the Ministers of Agriculture have committed to work together and with industry towards a set of common goals for improving environmental performance on farms. These meaningful and measurable goals aim to achieve improvements in the quality of our water, soil and air, and in biodiversity. Specific areas where progress towards these goals could be demonstrated are:
  • Air : Reduce agricultural risks to the health of air and the atmosphere. Water : Reduce agricultural risks to the health of water resources. Soil : Reduce agricultural risks to the health of soils.

Newsworthy: Environmental stewardship is the foundation for the sector's long-term health and vitality. Canada's success in agriculture is based on a foundation of industry innovation, scientific research and public policy that encourages farming to be more productive while keeping the land healthy. Since the first experimental farms were established over 110 years ago, Canada has become one of the world's most important food producers with a world-wide reputation for effective environmental management.
