Yolo Area Regional Network (YARN) invites you to participate in a special Agriculture, Environment and Telecommunications Summit, Friday, May 15, 1998, at the Heidrick Ag History Center, 1962 Hays Lane, Woodland, CA. Yolo County's economy is primarily based on agriculture. In the emerging Information Age, rapid growth and complex change are effecting this and all other sectors of society. The Yolo Area Regional Network invites you to participate in a free public Summit to explore the ways in which new telecommunications systems and services can be deployed in this region to the mutual service and benefit of our changing agricultural and environmental interests and needs. The Friday morning Summit, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 pm. will feature a facilitated public roundtable discussion, plus panels, and special informational presentations. Organizations are invited to set up and showcase their information and wares on display tables surrounding the meeting space. Issues to be discussed include:

Natural Industries, Inc. offers 100% all natural and safe products that can be used for a wide range of agricultural, horticultural, and turf applications. These products will reduce or eliminate the need for chemicals that are potentially harmful to plants, animals, people and the environment.
In utilizing these products, growers will see numerous benefits in addition to providing a healthier, more natural environment for plants to grow in. These benefits include: larger, more robust root systems, bigger plants, lusher turf grass, more yield and an increase in overall crop health.
Natural Industries, Inc. was established in 1992 by Bill Kowalski. His vision for the company was to use specific microorganisms to reduce and/or eliminate the use of certain harmful chemicals. Though no mission statement was formally written at that time, it soon became obvious to growers that this small company was run by a good and honest man they could trust and believe in. Continuing The Tradition
Today, Natural Industries is a rapidly growing corporation whose acclaimed products are used by thousands of growers. This success is due directly to the integrity of its founder and his dedication to honesty. Employees at Natural Industries, Inc. are deeply committed to operating the company with an adherence to these same principles and ethics.

The Centre for Rural Social Research (CRSR) conducts research into the social aspects of environmental management, especially in agriculture, with specific reference to the Murray-Darling Basin. Qualitative and quantitative methods including Rapid Rural Appraisal, focus group discussions, unstructured interviewing, as well as large scale social surveys and GIS mapping have been undertaken to research, amongst other things, the social basis of adoption of sustainable agriculture. Research projects undertaken by CRSR in this area include:- Australian Farm Families' Experiences of Drought Severe drought has long term economic and social costs to all Australians. Research for this project focused on farm families in the Central Queensland and Riverina areas who have lived - and are still living - through drought, and explored the sociological variables which influence attitudes to drought. The work was conducted by CRSR researcher, Dr Ian Gray, in conjunction with the Rural Social and Economic Research Centre at Central Queensland University. The knowledge gained through the `lived' experience of drought has been analysed and interpreted in order to bring that knowledge to other farm families in Australia. It will also enable an informed long term management strategy to be developed which will assist rural adjustment and counselling agencies in their activities. A report was published by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation and is available at www.rirdc.gov.au.

    95. Welcome To Terraseed Ltd
Provides a new seedmat system for landscaping for agriculture, amenity, forestry and environment. UK.
    http://www.terraseed.com
Terraseed is “advancing crop technology” by offering a major step-change in food quality, assurance and safety, to the benefit of consumers, food retailers, suppliers and the environment.
This is achieved by the use of physical barrier systems, replacing agrochemicals for weed, insect and disease control. Public anxiety about food safety and health is addressed by Terraseed technology through reducing the threat of salmonella and E.coli contamination in fresh salad crops. The technology also has applications in pharmaceutical crops and herbs. Terraseed is proven in organic farming for salad and vegetable production and makes large-scale organic production viable, where consumer demand exceeds the ability of leading growers to supply.
Cos lettuce crop ready for harvest The technology also benefits the production of tree seedlings for amenity and forestry industries, which are under enormous cost and environmental pressure.
Terraseed provides a very positive image in an industry where the technology has often been portrayed as potentially harmful or controversial. The system replaces agrochemicals and is not dependent on genetic modification (GM).

    Welcome to Nizwa.NET
Nizwa is one of the largest cities in Oman and the capital of the interior region. It has a wealth of cultural and ancient landmarks, most prominent is Nizwa fort built over a period of 12 years and located in the middle of downtown. The fort is surrounded by ancient traditional souqs (markets) where the locals trade in traditional as well as imported merchandise, from vegetables to jewelry. Nizwa is an oasis in the enclosed by a series of mountains upon which the famous green mountain ( al Jabal al Akhdar ) lies. The city is also at cross roads that lead to southern Oman as well as the Dhahirah and Sharqiah regions.
Nizwa.NET is educational, public, web site with the purpose of spreading awareness about the country of Oman in the Middle East. Nizwa.NET started as "Nizwa Oasis" and hosted by geocities but due to the popularity of the site, it was often blocked when bandwidth reached its maximum limits. Nizwa.NET was born out of that site with pretty much the same information but with more flexibility and ease of navigation. Besides tourist information, the site focuses on issues related to agriculture and the environment, which reflects my field of study.

THIS CLASS IS A PREREQUISITE for these classes:
    • ES 158/Anth 158/Anth 231 (Crop Genetic Resources) (spring 2004) ES 166BT/Anth 166BT/Anth 217 (Biotechnology, Food and Agriculture) (winter 2004) ES 166FP/Anth 166FP/Anth 266FP (Small-Scale Food Production) (spring 2004)

The challenge to agriculture has never been greater than it is at the beginning of the 21st century. World food production over the last 12,000 years has been able to keep up with the demand for food as farming spread from its centers of origin, and as farmers developed new crop varieties and technologies. Modern industrial agriculture and the green revolution have greatly increased yields. However, the human population of 6+ billion is currently doubling every 40 years, the negative impact of agricultural production on the Earth's natural resource base is increasing, the social and economic structure of agriculture is changing dramatically, and many millions of people continue to be malnourished.
