History of German polar research
Early polar research activities in Germany were concentrated on investigating geographic conditions in order to obtain a first idea of these hitherto unexplored regions of the world. In later years, attention was focused more on geomagnetic and meteorological questions. The huge unexplored polar regions awakened the curiosity of geologists and biologists. Alfred Wegener, considered the most important polar researcher from Germany, led numerous expeditions to Greenland. He died in November 1930 during an expedition to Greenland's ice cap. The polar research institute newly-established in Bremerhaven in 1980 was named after him. As a token of remembrance, the Alfred Wegener Institut has named its stations in the polar regions after the great German polar researchers (Koldewey, Neumayer, Dallmann, Filchner). , the first German South-Polar research ship was marooned for a year in Antarctic pack-ice. The R.V. Gauss was forced to overwinter in the ice, and could only break free after 11 months. Polar research continues to present a technical as well as a human challenge. In Polarstern Germany found a new research platform which reduced the risk to personel considerably, as well as enabling a broad spectrum of scientific studies to be carried out in the least accessible seas on the planet. As a result, polar research is much easier to plan:
As one of the most robust polar research ships in the world, Polarstern is particularly attractive for international science. All cruises are considerably oversubscribed. Usually, the scientists on board comprise one third AWI employees, one third German scientists and one third international colleagues. To date, scientists from 35 nations have joined the ship. Research at the AWI has attained international significance through the possibilities offered by the Polarstern. Polarstern has played an important part in building up German Antarctic research since 1980.
Polarstern is currently

Through a formal merger with Sterling College in December, 2003, the Center has gained accreditation of its program options in education and research on all aspects of the far North. Philosophy Our educational philosophy is founded upon the belief that individuals who help in deciding the future of Northern regions must bridge traditional disciplines. The unique issues presented by the North are inherently complex and must be approached from many angles. The Northern Studies Program at Sterling College emphasizes interdisciplinary study, careful thinking, and the ability to synthesize information into

Introduction
Membership of the SAP Higher Education and Research User Group (sometimes abbreviated as the "HER User Group" or "HERUG") is open to all degree-granting Higher Education and Research Institutions who are SAP customers with signed contracts for the productive use of one or more R/2 or R/3 software modules. Those Higher Education Institutions that are part of the SAP Tertiary Education Program in which R/3 is made available for inclusion in the curriculum for one or more academic modules or courses are NOT eligible for membership unless their institution also happens to be an SAP customer. Attendance at meetings of the HER User Group is open to all members and to HER Institutions that are "qualified SAP prospects." The right to vote at such meetings is restricted to member institutions.

... For Young People Education in Norway
From the time they are six years old, Norwegian children are entitled to 13 years of free education in primary, lower secondary and upper secondary schools, of which the first ten years are compulsory. Government loans and grants are provided for students at universities and colleges in Norway, and for a growing number of students studying abroad.
The Sami minority has its own primary, lower secondary and upper secondary schools, text books written in the Sami language, and its own Sami college in Karasjok in Northern Norway. Moreover, a large number of immigrants receive instruction in their mother tongue.
The International Summer School

The International Summer School in Oslo is an academic center for learning in an international context, and a forum for fostering intercultural understanding. Every summer from late June to early August it welcomes some 500 students from all over the world to its wide variety of graduate and undergraduate courses, mostly within the liberal arts and social sciences.
Information of Norwegian higher education and research
The National Academic Information Center (NAIC) is an an information centre on international education and recognition of foreign degrees which provides advice and recommendations concerning the admission of foreign students to Norwegian universities and institutions of higher learning, and answers queries and provides relevant information regarding the Norwegian educational system and opportunities for study in Norway at post-secondary level. NAIC, however, as an advisory body does not decide on applications.

Add USATODAY.com headlines to your Web site Science, life and travel in the Earth's cold regions By Jack Williams, USATODAY.com For most of us, the Arctic and Antarctic are remote, but this does not mean that they are not important. Think of it this way: The polar regions are Earth's air conditioners. Briefly, more sunlight falls on the parts of the Earth on either side of the equator - the tropics - than anywhere else. If the atmosphere and oceans didn't move this heat away, the tropics would continue growing warmer and warmer. But, the atmosphere and Earth do move the extra heat away to the Arctic, the huge region north of the Arctic Circle, and the Antarctic, the equally large region south of the Antarctic Circle.
