Arctic Resources The Institute for Arctic Studies has maintained for several years an index of Arctic Resources named 'Arctic Roadmap'. With the explosion of the Internet, however, this has become a virtually impossible undertaking. Therefore, we decided that the most effective way to provide Arctic Resources would be to link you to sites featuring good collections of Arctic-related links and databases. 'Arctic Roadmap' is still available if you are looking for some resources that were listed there. Arctic Links Arctic Information and Data: A Guide to Selected Resources - ARCUS

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument was established in recognition of its many remarkable geological, paleontological, archeological, biological, and historic features. The Monument constitutes an enormous outdoor laboratory for research into these various fields. Encompassing 1.9 million acres of rugged and primitive land in the Colorado Plateau, the Monument is comprised of three major physiographic regions; the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau, and the Escalante Canyons. Each of these regions has a distinctly different topography, and is recognized for its own unique attributes.
The Grand Staircase region is a series of multi-colored cliffs which begin at the rim of the Grand Canyon, and ascend nearly 5,500 feet across the southwestern side of the Monument, to end with a final stair of pink cliffs in Bryce Canyon National Park. These stairs consist of "risers" of resistant and non-resistant rock formations up to 2,000 feet high, and "treads" which are valleys or plateaus up to 15 miles wide. The stairs include the Chocolate Cliffs, Vermilion Cliffs, White Cliffs, Gray Cliffs, and Pink Cliffs

ABOUT ACUNS
Association Background
The Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS) was founded at Churchill, Manitoba, in 1977 and was incorporated in 1978. Registered as a charitable organization, ACUNS is a voluntary association of thirty-five Canadian universities and northern colleges with northern programs and interests. Programs vary widely in scope and size, from full-fledged northern centres and institutes to informal groups of scholars with interests in the polar regions. The Association was established because of the need to link these scholars with each other, with northern communities, with governments, and with national and international agencies concerned with northern science and development through education, professional and scientific training, and research.

The Research Unit Potsdam of the Alfred Wegener Institute
The Research Unit Potsdam began work in 1992. It is financed at 90% by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology and at 10% by the State of Brandenburg. In 1996, the annual budget was 6 million DM, and the staff comprised 70 people. The main fields of research of the Potsdam Research Unit are terrestrial geoscience studies in the periglacial regions at the margins of inland ice sheets and in permafrost areas as well as model and experimental investigations of atmospheric processes in the polar regions. These studies complete the programme of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, which previously had been mainly concerned with marine studies. In particular, the polar researchers at Potsdam concentrate on the Arctic, the key to an understanding of European climate. The Research Unit is part of the science campus "Albert Einstein" located on the historic "Telegrafenberg" in Potsdam. Following institutes are located on the Telegrafenberg, too, and a close cooperation in the field of climate research exists: Fields of Research of the Research Unit Potsdam:

Threats to the arctic environment
The natural surroundings of the Arctic are very fragile, and even minor encroachments can cause lasting damage. The Arctic environment is coming under growing pressure from human activity. Tourists are heading deeper into the wilderness, and more and more people want to experience the untouched nature that can only be found in polar regions. Concentrations of environmentally hazardous PCBs in polar bears in Svalbard have been found to be up to six times higher than in polar bears in Canada. Because of the difficult climate and other natural conditions and the large areas involved, monitoring the environment in the Arctic is a major undertaking. Svalbard
Svalbard is part of the Kingdom of Norway, but the Treaty of Svalbard from 1925 also gives other countries extensive rights. Citizens from signatory countries to the Treaty have the same rights as Norwegian citizens to engage in industry, mining, fishing, hunting and other maritime and commercial activities. All visits to Svalbard are subject to strict regulations regarding the protection of nature and historical sites, as well as ensuring the safety of the visitors. The tour organizer must inform the Governor of Svalbard of all tour plans well ahead of the start of the season, as well as present proof of insurance to cover any search and rescue operations should the need arise. Individual travellers must notify the authorities of any planned trips.

The Topic:
Polar Regions Easier - The polar regions are the icy areas around the North and South Pole. The Arctic and Antarctic are in the polar regions. Polar bears, penguins, seals, whales, and walrus are a few of the wildlife that live in these very cold regions. Harder - The cold polar regions are found on the far south and north ends of the globe. During the winter the sun never rises and the during the summer the sun never sets. When the sun does shine, it is very weak. The weather is very cold year around. The polar regions were the last places on Earth to be explored. There is much debate over the valuable oil and mineral resources available in the polar regions. The southern polar region is called Antarctica. This ice-covered continent is larger than the United States and is surrounded by ice and water. It contains a 16,000 foot mountain. Even in the summer, it rarely gets above freezing. Although it is dry, cold, and very windy, scientists and visitors live here. An international treaty allows people of many nations to live together. The northern polar region is called the Arctic. The Arctic is a huge ocean surrounded by land. Most of the ocean is frozen, but there are areas where the Inuit people live. The Arctic fringe is tundra covered with low grass plains.

Environmental Issues in the Polar Regions Regional Layers: Low-Tech Geographic Information Systems Complete Index Environmental Issues in the Polar Regions Overview: The polar regions are frequently neglected in discussions of the environment, but they shouldn't be. The environment of the polar regions is particularly susceptible to human impacts such as pollution and the depletion of the ozone layer. Moreover, the effects of global warming on the polar regions are likely to have major repercussions in the rest of the world. Students will learn about how environmental problems affect the polar regions, and they will create magazine ads to educate the public about these problems and to convince people to pay more attention to human impacts on the Arctic and Antarctic.
