Education in the Graduate University for Advanced Studies
Lecture for the 2001 fiscal year.
The Graduate University for Advanced Studies was founded in 1988 as a new system of postgraduate education in Japan. The University offers a three-year Ph. D. (doctoral) course. Research and education in the University depend upon close cooperation with the inter-university research institutes (parent institutes).
The Department of Polar Science consists of two chairs grouped as polar atmosphere science and polar hydrosphere and lithosphere science. Polar science requires interdiscipli-nary approaches taken from the sciences that include upper atmosphere physics, meteorology, glaciology, oceanography, geochemistry, geology, geomorphology, solid earth geo-physics, meteoritics, biology and polar regions engineering. The Department of Polar Science aims to educate students and to conduct research on physical, chemical, biological and geological processes and interactions in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. These scientific investigations are associ-ated with studies of the magnetosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and biosphere in a global context.

Microbial viruses in the Hudson River Viruses are everywhere! How important are they to aquatic organisms and what can they tell us about human pollution problems in the Hudson? My colleague, David Domozych and I received support from the Hudson River Foundation to join Marist and Skidmore College students in addressing these questions. We acknowledge additional support in sample and data collection efforts from personnel at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies and at our research sites within the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve

Improving capabilities in microbial ecology at Marist In July 2000, I received a grant from the National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation Program. Funds were provided for the acquisitiion of instrumentation to improve Science education here at Marist. Support from NSF's MRI Program was used to buy equipment needed to implement an integrated undergraduate education/research program in Microbial Ecology. Instrumentation is shared by teacher/researchers within Marist's School of Science. The grant supplied funds for the purchase of: 1) an Olympus BX51F epifluorescent research microscope with digital imaging and image analysis system, 2) a BiOLOG MicroStation TM

Polar Research Becomes a Hot Topic
The following report appears as a News Note in the July 1998 issue of Geotimes. It is reprinted here with permission. The polar regions of our planet may not be the most hospitable places with average temperatures in the sixties (below zero, that is!), but their very remoteness and the chemical record of past climates contained within long-lived glaciers provide scientists with tremendous insights into the rest of the planet. Several recent outreach events have sought to bring the scientific research conducted in these regions closer to home for the public and policymakers alike. Polar research was the theme for National Science and Technology Week and was featured in a congressional exhibition of research funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Because the geosciences play a major role in polar research, these events also provide a showcase for the valuable contributions that earth scientists are making to our understanding of past and present climates. National Science and Technology Week The fourteenth annual National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), an NSF-sponsored public outreach effort, was held April 26 - May 2, 1998. According to NSF Director Neal Lane, this year's theme

Frame Research Programme - 4.6 Other top back to project information Short description (English) See abstract top back to project information Abstract (English) The improvement of climate models and the ability to predict climatic changes caused by anthropogenic impacts needs a better understanding of the mechanisms of global climate changes. Paleoclimatology provides an excellent opportunity to investigate such mechanisms and polar ice cores are unique archives which allow a direct determination of the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases and climatic changes in the past. Europe has leading laboratories in the field of ice core recovery and analyses. Since about 12 years the efforts in polar regions are co-ordinated by European research projects. The Greenland Ice core Project (GRIP) successfully recovered an ice core at the Summit of the Greenland ice sheet and provided a wealth of information especially about fast climatic changes. North-South connections of the climate system remained very important open questions. Therefore, a new project with the goal to investigate past climatic changes by the analyses of two new ice cores to be drilled in Antarctica was implemented. The 'European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica' (EPICA) is supported by the European Union. Ice core drilling has reached a depth of 1460 m at Dome Concordia (East Antarctica) and a second deep drilling will be started at Kohnen Station (Dronning Maud Land) in winter 2001/02.

The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is one of the 16 national research centres in Germany. The Institute was established as a public foundation in 1980 and was named after the geophysicist and polar researcher, Alfred Wegener, who died in the Greenland ice in 1930. It is financed by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (90%),the state of Bremen (8%), stats of Brandenburg and Schleswig-Holstein (1%9. Atmospheric and space research from polar regions
    M J Rycroft
College of Austronautics, Cranfield Institute of Technology, Bedforshire, UK The polar regions are unique laboratories for carrying out research on both the atmosphere and the near-Earth space environment. The relatively undisturbed conditions help us explore phenomena like the greenhouse effect and the springtime Antarctic ozone depletion, the so-called ozone hole. Further out, uv and x-radiation from the Sun produce the Earth s Ionosphere, vital for man s communication network. Yet satellite and polar research is showing us how events on the Sun can adversely affect this near-Earth space environment.
