This gallery presents images of fossils from the research collections in the Division of Invertebrate Paleontology. We have attempted to showcase display quality individuals and spectacularly preserved specimens from our type and systematic collections. We have also included a sample of faunas from various fossil bonanzas (lagerstatten) represented in the Peabody collections. Specimen and locality information accompanies each image when possible. Photography by John R. Barbour, Krista Carlson, Stephen T. Hasiotis, Herb Meyer, William K. Sacco, Carl W. Stock, and Tom Whiteley. A list of taxa and lagerstatten is available. To return to this page, click on the title bar. We are constantly updating the gallery and adding new specimens, so check back frequently. 46. Strange Science: Timeline
Timeline of important events in paleontology and biology.
http://www.strangescience.net/timeline.htm
This (by no means comprehensive!) list chronicles some of the major events in the history of paleontology and biology. Other significant events appear in purple type. 610-425 BC-Philosophers Thales, Anaximander, Pythagoras, Xenophanes and Herodotus propose that marine fossils found inland lived in the sea, and that the now dry land was once underwater. This correct supposition will be forgotten for centuries. c.400 BC-Herodotus relates the griffin myth. (The myth is probably inspired by Protoceratops and Psittacosaurus remains.) c.78-Pliny the Elder publishes a 37-volume natural history encyclopedia. Containing both accurate and inaccurate information, it will become the basis of many scientific disciplines. 150-The physician Galen travels from Turkey to Alexandria to study anatomy. Galen will establish the concept of humors (phlegm, blood, black bile and yellow bile) that determine both health and personality. Belief in these four humors will dominate medicine and biology for many centuries. c.180-Pausanias records a description of the skeleton of the hero Ajax. (It is probably a fossil mastodon or rhinoceros.)

PREFACE
Greetings from Michael Sternberg . I am an avocational paleontologist with a keen interest in the geologic history of the Northwest. This site is the product of my continuing research and study in the attempt to understand the lands around me. Recognizing that there are others in my situation, far from university resources and academic contact, I present this material as an attempt to make geology more accessible for the public. I am solely responsible for the content and any errors. I wish to thank all the professionals who have in kind and generous manner provided information and clarification. The purpose of this website is to provide information on the geology and paleontology of the Northwest United States and Coastal Western Canada. To this end, both popular texts and professional papers have been used. To ensure accuracy of information presented here, the author solicits additional references and citations from all visitors. Due to the complexity of Northwest Geology, and the extent of the geographical area covered, this work can not pretend to cover all aspects of the geological history of the region. In addition, other topics of interest to the avocational geologist/paleontologist are on hand. It is necessary to divide the region into discrete provinces due to the variety of causative forces at work in the past and simply because there's a lot of ground to cover. This site is dynamic and evolving. Please return periodically to view new and expanded coverage.

Paleontology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Paleontology is the study of the developing history of life on earth, of ancient plants and animals based on the fossil record , evidence of their existence preserved in rocks . This includes the study of body fossils , tracks, burrows, cast off parts, fossilized feces coprolites "), and chemical residues. Table of contents 1 Overview 2 Notable paleontologists 3 Research 4 See also ... edit
Overview
Modern paleontology sets ancient life in its contexts, by studying how long-term physical changes of global geography (" paleogeography ") and climate (" paleoclimate ") have affected the evolution of life, how ecosystems have responded to these changes and have changed the planetary environment in turn, and how these mutual responses have affected today's patterns of biodiversity . So paleontology overlaps with geology , the study of rocks and rock formations, and with botany biology zoology , and ecology , fields concerned with living creatures and how they interact. Palynology is the study of pollens, whether modern or geological. Two major subdivisions of paleontology are paleozoology (animals) and paleobotany (plants). Paleozoologists may specialize in

Welcome to Field Adventures in Paleontology! Let me take you on a personal tour of some of the digs I've gone on in recent years, both scientific excavations and personal collecting trips, and show you some of the fossils that are found there. Click on the green location on the map that you'd like to visit: All literary and photographic work contained in this website, except the few Alaska photos credited to Ed Kazzimir, is my own. My purpose in creating the site is to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of paleontology with anyone who is interested. Therefore, if you find information and/or photos which you would like to use in a work of your own, please feel free; my only stipulation is that they not be reproduced in a for-profit published work. If you do use them, a simple line crediting Lynne M. Clos as the source would be appreciated. Field Adventures in Paleontology check out my new book! Don't see the location here that you'd like to visit, or want to see more? Try the Fossil Sites Page! Also, if you'd like to view a booklet about fossils I've written for children, click here.

These exhibits trace evolutionary thought as it has developed over time, pausing to ponder the contributions of scientists and thinkers including Aristotle, Darwin, Wallace, and many others. Explore the theory of evolution Learn about the history of evolutionary thought
There are many other great places to look on-line for information about evolution. Here are a few of our favorites:
Understanding Evolution , a new site launched in February 2004 to meet the needs of K-12 teachers. The site provides an informal on-line course covering essential science content, as well as a searchable database of resources for the classroom.
Talk Origins Archive , a rich source of information about evolution and the evolution/creation controversy.
National Center for Science Education website, a nationally-recognized clearinghouse for information and advice on teaching evolution in the classroom.
