Queen Hatshepsut's expedition to the Land of Punt: The first oceanographic cruise?
by Sayed Z. El-Sayed Queen Hatshepsut ruled Egypt from ca. 1503 to 1480 B.C. In contrast to the warlike temper of her dynasty, she devoted herself to administration and the encouragement of commerce. In the summer of 1493 B.C., she sent a fleet of five ships with thirty rowers each from Kosseir, on the Red Sea, to the Land of Punt, near present-day Somalia. It was primarily a trading expedition, for Punt, or God's Land, produced myrrh, frankincense, and fragrant ointments that the Egyptians used for religious purposes and cosmetics. We do not know when the ships returned to Kosseir, but Hatshepsut herself informed us in lengthy inscriptions on the walls of her beautiful terraced temple at Deir el-Bahri, near Luxor in the Valley of the Kings, that "the ships were laden with the costly products of the Land of Punt and with its many valuable woods, with very much sweet-smelling resin and frankincense, with quantities of ebony and ivory . . ." The queens' artists immortalized this homecoming in murals on the walls of the temple, which depict not only potted myrrh saplings and sacks of frankincense, but also fish and other fauna and flora collected during the expedition. The drawings on these walls are so accurate that the famed ichthyologist, the late Carl Hubbs of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, told me that he was "able to identify the fish to the species level" from the drawings!

HINDENBURG REMEMBERED
by LCDR James TenBrink, USN (RET)

Picture Credits: Navy Lakehurst Historical Society
To revisit Lakehurst after nearly 57 years is a personal pleasure as this is the cite of aviation history, and it is also the area of the 20th Annual Reunion of the NWSA from 11-15 May 1994. The "Airship Chapter", as hosts, has great plans for our enjoyment.
To some of you, like my wife Evelyn, this is your first visit; while others can recall events of prior years.
The name Lakehurst became known worldwide because of the Hindenburg disaster, May 6, 1937 on the field of Lakehurst. The students of Aerology Class A-13 received a lasting memory as we were assigned to assist in mooring procedures, and became part of the rescue party. Each one has his own experience in his memory. I will share some from mine relating to Lakehurst. Arriving by train on a cold, dark night in January, 1937, I got my first impression of Lakehurst. The conductor came by and said, "This is where you get off, Buddy." On looking out I saw only a few dim lights, and asked him if I couldn't stay on the train until we got up to the depot. He said, "This is it. Just stand by the railway track and someone will be out to pick you up."

For the Summer of 2004, we are offering three adult courses in union with our teacher courses. We also strive to foster an awareness and respect for all of the environment. Exercises in the development of self esteem, trust and cooperation are woven throughout the program. Our staff is comprised of highly qualified professional educators and biologists who have extensive experience. Two of the most important considerations in choosing staff members are the candidate's maturity and certifications in marine ecology/environmental. Directors Dennis and Orma Bowen are experienced, dedicated educators and have a keen interest in preserving the natural beauty. Related terms include karting camps for kids global education summer camp teach overseas camp holly mount summer camp whale watching from ship , and loganacres outdoor adventure camps . The staff at Whale Camp is recruited from college graduate and professional ranks. In all sessions participants will be spending ample time on both land and water. Make new friends. Together, raise the sails on our fifty-foot schooner. Help plot the course.

    Description
The ICES Journal of Marine Science publishes articles, short communications, and critical reviews that contribute to our scientific understanding of marine systems and the impact of human activities. The Journal serves as a foundation for scientific advice across the broad spectrum of management and conservation issues related to the marine environment. Oceanography, marine habitats, living resources, and related management topics constitute the key elements of papers eligible for publication. Integrated studies that bridge gaps between traditional disciplines are particularly welcome. The scope of the Journal has been broadened to include economic, social, and public administration studies to the extent that they are directly related to management of the seas and are of general interest to marine scientists. Proceedings of ICES-sponsored symposia constitute an integral part of the
