Exploring Satellite Oceanography (A set of lesson plans for high school science students)
Lesson Plan #1: Introduction to Satellite Oceanography
Graduate School of Oceanography / University of Rhode Island Amy Schubert and Peter Cornillon
Abstract
This unit is an introduction to infrared satellite imagery and is designed to be used as a classroom exercise. It begins with an introduction to infared satellite imagery and explains two sample images. It then gives some uses of satellite imagery and suggests questions that can be answered with the images provided at the end. You can see blow-ups of the small images by clicking on them and see the images listed at the end by clicking on their date.
An Introduction to Infared Satellite Imagery
The satellite images shown here are of sea surface temperature. The data used to construct these images were obtained with an AVHRR sensor (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) carried on a NOAA satellite (Nation Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). This sensor measures the amount of thermal infared radiation given off by the surface of the ocean. It is called 'thermal' radiation because radiation of this frequency warms our skin. A fire feels warm because it gives off lots of radiation at this frequency. The amount of thermal infared radiation given off by an object is related to its temperature (dying embers give off less radiation than a hot fire and a person gives off even less). Thus by measuring the amount of radiation given off by the ocean we can calculate its temperature.

90. Oceanography ABC Books
You have been asked by the school librarian to create an oceanography ABC book. Use the following internet links to obtain oceanography information
http://projects.edtech.sandi.net/valencia/oceanabcbooks/
Link To Teacher Page Oceanography ABC Books by Lona Davies Introduction Task Resources ... Conclusion Introduction You have been asked by the school librarian to create an Oceanography ABC book. The librarian wants to add your book to the collection of books in the school library. Other students your age will read your book. You will read ABC books, especially The Ocean Alphabet Book and Swimming Through the Alphabet . While reading these books, look at the author's style of writing, the format of the book, and the illustrations. Research the ocean with a group of friends and pick a topic for your book. Your challenge is to create an ABC book that includes items from your chosen oceanography topic using all of the letters of the alphabet. Try to come up with an original idea and format. This is your chance to be an author and illustrator of a children's book. The Task Your task is to create an ABC book about the ocean for children your age.
  • Read the books The Ocean Alphabet and Swimming Through the Alphabet. Read a variety of other ABC books to analyze style, format, illustrations, etc.

Oceanography Resources
Here you'll find links to other collections of links (i.e. metalinks), a list of available numerical ocean circulation models, various educational and enlightening documents, a guide to the scattered and varied data sets available, a list of references or three, and a guide to the graphics and imaging resources available via the Web. There's also the usual list of FTP/Gopher/WWW servers at various oceanographic institutions. Forthcoming will be an expanded (i.e. enlarged and annotated) version of the reference list(s), a more thorough review and discussion of the graphics resources (perhaps with the odd example), hopefully many more educational documents, a searchable data set collection, and much, much more on the subject of ocean circulation modeling. There'll also be an eternally growing glossary of oceanography terms as part of a larger climate/paleoclimate glossary. If you're using a graphical browser then you'll notice quite a few images of sailing vessels scattered throughout these pages. These were liberated from, amongst other places, the Age of Sail Page that contains all sorts of information about sailing past and present. More drawings and pictures of

Global Ocean Data Viewer The Global Ocean Data Viewer is a demo of a project that will access World Ocean Atlas databases to display ocean data in a way that students can visualize how the map and depth plots relate to each other. The Demo shows only annual averaged data, but demonstrates the power of this approach. I have found it to work well on all platforms, except it may be jerky on IE on Mac OSX.
