Geographically informed people must understand those impacts and how humans use technology to adapt to phenomena such as fires, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanoes. This lesson is designed to help students understand that the negative consequences of natural hazards can be reduced if we understand our vulnerability to learn to prepare for them. Purchase Natural Disasters and Environmental Hazards Natural Disasters Travelers should be aware of the potential for the occurrence of natural phenomena such as hurricanes, tornados, or earthquakes while abroad. Natural disasters can contribute to the transmission of some diseases, especially since water supplies and sewage systems may be disrupted. However, transmission cannot take place unless the causative agent is in the environment. Although typhoid can be endemic in low-income countries, natural disasters have seldom led to epidemic levels of disease. However, floods have been known to prompt outbreaks of leptospirosis in areas where the organism is found in water sources. (See for information on how to minimize the risk of infection.) Of greatest important in preventing enteric disease transmission when water and sewage systems have been disrupted is ensuring that water and food supplies are safe to consume. If contamination is suspected, water should be boiled and appropriately disinfected. (See .) As a precaution, travelers should have a medical evaluation to determine what additional care may be required for a wound potentially contaminated with feces, soil, or saliva or for a wound that has been exposed to water that may contain parasites or bacteria. Tetanus booster status should always be kept current.

What makes a natural hazard into a natural disaster? Is the seeming increase in the occurrence of natural disasters real? What are the likely causes? What trends are making society more vulnerable to natural hazards? Are there measures society can take to mitigate these disasters or the conditions responsible for them? Are there measures society can take to reduce loss of life and damages? INTRODUCTION: The Honorable Dr. James Baker

Natural hazards and disasters Many small island developing countries are particularly vulnerable to various types of natural hazards and disasters: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, floods, hurricanes and cyclones. To the extent that more than half of the 25 most disaster-prone countries are SIDS.

In terms of ocean-related hazards, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is centrally involved in international cooperation on tsunamis, the giant ocean wave or series of ocean waves produced by a large scale disturbance on the ocean floor. In the mid-late 1960s, IOC took the lead in coordinating the efforts of its Member States and formed the International Coordinating Group for the Tsunami Warning System in the Pacific , whose main purpose is to assure that tsunami watches, warnings and advisory bulletins are disseminated throughout the Pacific.

When asked how the Sept. 11 attacks affected the people charged with responding to disasters, University of Colorado at Boulder sociology Professor Dennis Mileti went to a shelf in his office and brought back a serious cartoon. The three characters in the cartoon are labeled "bioterrorism," "dirty bomb" and "natural hazards." The natural hazards character – representing events such as hurricanes, earthquakes and floods – is saying to the other two: "Welcome to the club." And that's exactly what's happened since the attacks on the United States, Mileti said. The professionals charged with responding to terrorist attacks today are the same people who have been charged with responding to disasters of any sort for decades: firefighters, police officers, emergency managers, planners, engineers, insurers and government officials. Sept. 11 altered the focus and scope of the CU-Boulder Natural Hazards Research and Applications Information Center, of which Mileti is director. The keynote speaker at the center's 27th annual international workshop on disasters last July was the senior director for response and recovery of the U.S. Office of Homeland Security, who also oversaw federal recovery efforts in New York City after the attack on the World Trade Center.

Abstracts of each chapter are available on the Public Entity Risk Institute web site. The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, resulted in a disaster that was unusual in U.S. experience in a number of ways: the densely developed and populated disaster site (in New York City); the type of buildings and infrastructure that were damaged; the fact that the disaster was the result of an intentional act; and the sheer scope of the emergency response that was needed. These characteristics provided an unprecedented opportunity for the natural hazard research community to help better understand what happened through programs such as the University of Colorado at Boulder's Natural Hazards Research and Applications Information Center's Quick Response research program and the National Science Foundation's Small Grants for Exploratory Research. Both programs enabled scholars to enter the field quickly to collect perishable data in the days and weeks after September 11th.

Long-term data from these events, including photographs, can be used to establish the past record of natural hazard event occurrences. These data are also important for planning, response, and mitigation of future events. The National Geophysical Data Center plays a major role in post-event data collection. Natural disasters hazards: be prepared
Floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes can be devastating. Even more devastating are the consequences of not being fully prepared. Below are some of the general suggestions for disaster preparedness. Always keep a supply of food and water available. Choose foods which do not require cooking or refrigeration. Also keep on hand covered containers which may be used to store fresh water. After a flood, discard any food that may have come in contact with flood water. Boil any water for ten minutes before using. bodyOffer(21288) Always keep a battery-powered radio to keep abreast of any warnings or weather alerts. Have several flashlights readily available. Keep a supply of batteries on hand and store in a waterproof container. Keep important papers and insurance policies in a safe place where they will be easy to find if home must be evacuated. If pets must be left behind, make sure that they are put in the safest place possible with a supply of food and water. If not required to evacuate, keep indoors and stay tuned to news and weather programs for updates on conditions. When returning home after evacuation take special care. Live power lines may be hidden under standing water or debris. Do not use open flames when entering the home since ruptured gas lines might be leaking. Be careful when walking since walls and floors may be unstable.
