We humans are about as subtle as the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. Acid rain and global warming show that we hold immense power over life on Earth, yet we wield it indiscriminately. The damage we do is increasing. In the next 20 years, the population will increase by 1.5 billion. These people will need food, water and electricity, but already our soils are vanishing, fisheries are being killed off, wells are drying up, and the burning of fossil fuels is endangering the lives of millions. We are heading for cataclysm. In this section you will find three scenarios - three routes to catastrophe that we face unless we can tackle the evils of overconsumption and the yawning gap between rich and poor. Climate change, pollution and population growth each has surprising and potentially devastating impacts. Aspects of all three will strike before this century is out. QUIZZES: ANGEL OR DEVIL?

global warming
Global warming is real and underway The mainstream scientific consensus on global warming is becoming clearer every day: changes in our climate are real and they are underway. Now. But we can do something about it. The evidence that human-induced global warming is real is increasingly clear and compelling.

  • Warming in the 20th century is greater than at any time during the past 400-600 years.
    offsite
    trend chart
In addition, changes in the natural environment support the evidence from temperature records:
  • mountain glaciers the world over are receding;
    the Arctic ice pack has lost about 40% of its thickness over the past four decades;
    the global sea level is rising about three times faster over the past 100 years compared to the previous 3,000 years; and
    there are a growing number of studies that show plants and animals changing their range and behavior in response to shifts in climate.

As the Earth continues to warm, there is a growing risk that the climate will change in ways that will seriously disrupt our lives. While on average the globe will get warmer and receive more precipitation, individual regions will experience different climatic changes and environmental impacts. Among the most severe consequences of global warming are:
  • a faster rise in sea level

The multidisciplinary McGill Centre for Climate and Global Change Research (C GCR) was created in March 1990. Its current membership is composed of 17 faculty members from seven departments and one school.
The main objectives of the Centre are:
  • To promote research on the interactive physical, biological, chemical and socio-economic processes that regulate our global environment, and
    To provide a stimulating academic environment for graduate and postdoctoral students in the emerging fields of "earth system science" and climate and global change impacts.
