    About This Document
A Beginner's Guide to Geographic Information Systems came about as a joint project between myself and Mike Creech as part of our respective Directed Field Experiences, in the Engineering Library and the Map Library, here at the University of Michigan. Originally, we were going to put together a guide to GIS resources on the Internet. As we began to view the existing net resources, we realized that there were already many indexes to GIS internet resources. However, there were very few, if any, documents that actually took the time to explain in detail the basics of GIS. Most of the existing resources give only brief definitions. Our goal with this page is to provide a more thorough explanation of the fundamental concepts of geographic information systems to the GIS novice. The guide will also provide some of the best internet examples that we have found representing government, academic and commercial GIS activity. In addition, we will also list some of the most comprehensive and useful guides that we have found for further information on this rapidly expanding field.

Any region of the world could have been studied, and the case of the Urubamba river has been chosen more because of personal than of technical reasons. My familiarity with the region, undoubtedly, biased the selection of the study site, but that does not imply that knowledge of the area is required for identifying the basic spatial hydrologic features of the region.

Welcome to the GIS Jobs Clearinghouse . The most visited GIS/RS jobs site on the Internet. Started in 1992, the GJC has helped thousands of GIS/RS professionals find positions. With hundreds of positions and resumes in our databases, the GJC has resources for both employers and those seeking jobs. The GJC is no longer a free site (it is for posting resumes). We are charging minimal fees to post position descriptions in order to operate the site. As always, if you have any success, questions or just a suggestion or two then please drop us a note Important: If you plan on posting information on this site, then you will need to establish a username and password . You do not need to register if you're not posting information! News: The GJC is now running on a new server thanks to the folks at SMIG The GJC is again named a top 500 job site by CareerXRoads 1/15/04 - Made a couple of small changes to the posting pages and all looks fine. You may now have only one resume online at any time. That should help keep the resume listing a bit cleaner. Please let me know if you problems posting anything. Anyway, lot's of resources being posted every day so check back often! As always, should you experience any trouble please

The Wiley College Homepage I've also included a GIS resources page. This page provides links to other GIS related sites and is divided into five general categories: general resources, GIS vendors, teaching resources, data sources, and jobs. While these are not complete, they should provide ample opportunities to obtain information for teaching GIS.
