Our research objectives are to characterize the biogeochemical processes which regulate the distribution of inorganic and organic compounds in order to determine their impact on the environment in the past, the present, and the future. An important component of our research is field-based and includes oceanic cruises, in situ measurements in coastal and deep-sea environments, and investigations in pristine or polluted rivers, lakes, aquifers, and saltmarshes. Besides individual collaborations within EAS and outside the Institute, the Geochemistry group is actively involved in the

Course Description This course explores the fundamental geochemical processes which affect the fate and transport of inorganic and organic pollutants in the terrestrial environment . The course will cover both equilibrium and kinetic descriptions of the processes which affect the fate of pollutants. W will link the effects of these processes on pollutant bioavailability remediation and ecotoxicology Edwards aquifer recharge zone , Austin Texas. Photo B. Herbert. We will conceptualize the Earth as a system, focusing on specific suficial systems such as soils, sediments, groundwater, lakes, wetlands and estuaries. In particular, we will explore the use of a reductionist approach to the understanding of these complex systems.

In the hydrothermal vents "black smokers" shown below, located on a mid-ocean ridge some 3000 meters below the ocean surface, black metal sulfides can be seen precipitating from the water boiling from the vent as it encounters the colder ocean water: Estimate the temperature of the boiling water at this depth. Some data you will need includes: gravitational acceleration = 9.807 m sec
enthalpy of vaporization of water = 44.00 kJ / mol
density of sea water = 1.025 g cm This question was stimulated by a seminar given by Dr. Meg Tivey, RIDGE 2000 Distinguished Lecturer. Email your answer to dcoe@mtech.edu Spring 2004 Fall 2003 Spring 2003 Chemistry and Geochemistry Newsletter ...

Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Kimberlites and Related Rocks from Finland (printed version published in the Proceedings of the 7th International Kimberlite Conference, 1999, p.625-636.) Hugh E. O'Brien and Matti Tyni Geological Survey of Finland, P.O. Box 96, FIN-02151 Espoo, Finland ABSTRACT Farther into the Karelian Craton occur dikes of carbonate-rich ultramafic lamprophyre (aillikite) and a rock which appears to have both olivine lamproite and Group II kimberlite affinities. The latter contains most of the typomorphic minerals of lamproite including phlogopite, K-richterite, low-Al diopside and has a major element composition equivalent to average olivine lamproite. Despite this the rock has tetraferriphlogopite zoning profiles and an accessory Ca-Zr silicate that differ from other reported lamproites and are in fact more typical of those seen in Group II kimberlites (orangeites). Keywords: kimberlite, lamproite, orangeite, aillikite, Finland, Nd-Sr isotopes, petrography, mineralogy, geochemistry. 1. INTRODUCTION

Neil C. Sturchio

Sometimes geochemists can learn something new from looking closely at something old, or something big from looking at something small. New tools for measuring geochemical compositions and structures of geological materials on microscopic scales are yielding exciting advances in our understanding of the Earth.
Good examples are petrographic, geochemical, and isotopic studies of detrital zircons in metamorphosed sediments from the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia (Wilde and others, Nature , v. 409, p. 175-178; Mojszis and others, Nature , v. 409, p. 178-181). These studies revealed not only the oldest ages of any known minerals yet found in terrestrial rocks 4.3 to 4.4 billion years old but also evidence for widespread liquid water at the Earth's surface.
Another example is the insight gained into Phanerozoic seawater chemistry from examination of the compositions of individual primary fluid inclusions from marine halite deposits (Lowenstein and others, Science, 294, 1084-1086). The observed variations in fluid inclusion compositions with time are correlated with seafloor spreading rates, volcanic events, global sea level, and the mineralogies of marine limestones and evaporites.
Scientific exploration of the sea floor led to the discovery of a new type of submarine hydrothermal system, 15 kilometers off the axis of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 30 degrees north latitude near its intersection with the Atlantis Fracture Zone (Kelley et al.
