Stanford s environmental Initiative is a consortium of people from the Schools of Earth Sciences, Education, Engineering, Humanities and Sciences, Law
http://environment.stanford.edu/
A global transition is under way in which the world is becoming more crowded, more consuming, and more connected. Meeting the needs of a population of 10-11 billion people at the end of this century implies greater production and consumption of goods and services, and increased demands for energy, food, land, and materials. One goal of faculty, students, and researchers at Stanford University is that this also be a transition to sustainability, in which the needs of the human population are met while protecting and restoring the planet's life support systems, including our ecological, air, water, and climate systems. Stanford's Environmental Initiative is a consortium of people from the Schools of Earth Sciences Education Engineering Humanities and Sciences ... Medicine and the Graduate School of Business , whose research, teaching, and outreach are directed toward interdisciplinary and integrative approaches to solving problems of the environment while meeting the needs of people and the other species with whom we share the Planet.

The scholarly focus of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is the interplay between humankind and the physical, chemical, and biological processes, and other species that regulate the function of both natural and engineered environments. We describe environmental processes to understand their effects upon humankind and consider the reciprocal effects of human activities on these processes. The overall goal of our inquiry is the development of explanatory and predictive capacities for assessing and mitigating consequences to human health or the environment through alternative societal actions and policies. NEW BROWNFIELDS LAW ENCOURAGES FIRMS TO EXPAND If liability concerns have prevented your firm from developing or expanding, a new federal brownfields law may help your firm move forward. On January 11, President Bush signed a law that will promote brownfields redevelopment by providing incentives to would-be purchasers or developers of abandoned, contaminated land. The new law, applicable in every state, protects these parties from federal liability when they comply with state voluntary cleanup programs for the properties they decontaminate and develop. As President Bush stated, the new law "gives protection against lawsuits to prospective buyers and others who didn't create the brownfields, but want to help clean them up and develop them."

Case Study: CBL in a Foundation Course in Environmental Science, Engineering and Management Introduction
[Screenshot]
The content of a first year course in Environmental Science, Engineering and Management at the University of Leeds is now wholly delivered by computer-assisted learning courseware . The multimedia courseware was funded, written and developed internally, within the Environment Centre at the University of Leeds. It is the first time that an entire course in our subject area in the UK has been delivered by this method. The Course The multimedia programme provides the course material for a twenty credit module, at level 1, validated by the University of Leeds (150 hours student study time in all). It is designed to provide students with a comprehensive background in environmental science and environmental issues. It provides introductions to the different physical and biological processes which generate the environment on earth which supports life as we know it. It also provides introductions to the impacts on the environment of human utilisation of resources (pollution, resource depletion) and introductions to resource management options. The courseware was developed initially to provide a common core to the range of different environmental science degree programmes which are offered at the University of Leeds. These are currently eleven such programmes in all, including Management, Engineering and Ecologically focused schemes. It was required that students taking each of these programmes should, by the end of their first year, have a common grounding in the main environmental processes and issues.

Environmental Leaders in the Making
UCLA's innovative Environmental Science and Engineering Program provides practical education for tomorrow's environmental problem solvers. Traditional discipline-based education does not provide students with the skills and insight to solve complex environmental problems. Today's environmental professionals need scientific, engineering, and policy skills to translate our collective resolve and resources into effective environmental action. Such environmental professionals are at the cutting edge of efforts to safeguard the environment. The Environmental Science and Engineering Program trains environmental scientists, engineers and policy makers in a more interdisciplinary manner than is afforded by traditional Ph.D. programs. Graduates who have earned the Doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering now occupy positions of leadership in government agencies, the private sector, the national laboratories, and public interest groups.

The Division of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) at CSM was established in 1981 and began offering Master of Science degree programs in 1984. Since then, the Division has grown rapidly and now includes a Ph.D. degree program. Reflecting CSM's campus-wide commitment to the environment, the ESE Division is one of the largest graduate degree programs at the university with 62 masters students and 22 Ph.D. students (Fall 2003). Starting in the Fall of 1999, CSM added an Environmental Engineering undergraduate specialty in Engineering which has 48 undergraduate students. As a university founded on mineral and energy exploration, CSM has a unique focus on providing students with education and research opportunities that revolve around responsible stewardship of the earth and its resources. As part of this focus, the ESE Division offers a multidisciplinary environmental science and engineering program. Graduate students in the program come from diverse academic backgrounds in such fields as life sciences, earth sciences, chemistry, and most engineering disciplines. The Division's faculty are equally interdisciplinary in their research interests, and they teach basic as well as applied science and engineering.
