Welcome!
Research and teaching in the Department of Systems Ecology at Stockholm University focuses on the study of ecosystems and on sustainable use of natural resources
We study both basic and applied ecological problems, with an emphasis on coastal and marine ecosystems and coupled social-ecological systems.
Research
We have a long tradition of research on the Baltic Sea and its drainage basin. The Department has been involved in the development of the interdisciplinary field of ecological economics, and we perform research in many developing countries, mostly in the tropics. We view humanity as an integral part of ecosystems, and apply a systems perspective in our analyses of how ecosystems are used and abused by humans and on the interplay between societal development and the life-supporting environment.
The Department provides a stimulating research environment and there is close collaboration with the Centre for Transdisciplinary Environmental Research (CTM), the

Salt Marsh Restoration Project
Salt marsh at mid-tide. Noel Shore, Nova Scotia.
Salt marshes are amongst the most biologically productive ecosystems in the world (similar to rainforests and tropical mangrove forests). Found in protected bays and estuaries, and along the shores of tidal rivers, salt marshes serve as a transition zone between the land and sea.
Recognizable for their characteristic plants, cordgrass in the lower marsh and salt meadow hay in the high marsh, salt marshes have the appearance of a grassy meadow complete with creeks and ponds (pannes). The daily ebb and flood of the tide has a significant influence on the form and function of the salt marsh and is crucial to its health. Salt Marsh Home Why Are Salt Marshes Important?

Cave Ecology
Surface / Subsurface Relationships:
Caves and the land in which they are located are closely tied together. What happens on the surface can affect the subsurface including groundwater and caves. Groundwater pollution in cave country is a serious problem. It is often more serious than surface water pollution. Several types of groundwater pollution occur frequently. The most common form of groundwater pollution is human waste (sewage), followed by industrial and hazardous waste. All too commonly, poorly planned sewage systems (such as septic field systems) contaminate nearby wells and springs. Entire towns may contaminate karst groundwater systems if they discharge waste water to surface streams which sink into the ground and feed groundwater supplies. Whatever the source, groundwater pollution is the result. The key to preventing these problems is sound planning which places major emphasis on the protection of groundwater quality. If sewage enters karst groundwater systems, it can seriously deplete the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water. Without this oxygen, aquatic life will die of suffocation. When serious oxygen depletion occurs, the underground waters exude offensive odors.

Phases of the Cardiac Cycle
The cardiac cycle is the cycle of events that occur as the heart contracts. There are two phases of the cardiac cycle. In the diastole phase the heart ventricles are relaxed and the heart fills with blood. In the systole phase the ventricles contract and pump blood to the arteries.
