Thunderstorm electricity is the main focus for the Atmospheric Physics Group.
    A Thunderstorm in New Mexico
This subject has been investigated by many people over the last 250 years, ever since Benjamin Franklin's experiments first showed that thunderstorms are electrified. However, surprisingly little is known of the electrical structure of storms or how storms become electrified. We investigate this scientific problem primarily through observational methods. (In other words, we go out and get wet!)
Along with our collaborators from other institutions and l aboratories
we launch instrumented balloons into storms.
Our primary research area is in determining the electrical, dynamical, and precipitation characteristics of thunderstorms. We broaden these studies in many ways and dabble in other things, as described under

    and evidenced in our

About the Atmospheric Physics Research Group
Faculty: Marshall , Rust, and Stolzenburg Thunderstorm electricity is the main focus of research for the atmospheric physics group at The University of Mississippi. Although this subject has been investigated by many people over the last 250 years, surprisingly little is known of the internal electrical structure of storms or the processes by which storms become electrified. Our group investigates the electrical, dynamical, and precipitation characteristics of thunderstorms mainly through observational methods. During field campaigns, instrumented balloons are launched into thunderstorms to measure the electric field and other internal parameters of the clouds. Our observations are also contributing to a better understanding of fundamental questions in atmospheric electricity. Our electric field data have helped identify a possible lightning initiation process, and they are proving useful to scientists studying sprite and other high-altitude luminous events. In addition, we are collaborating with researchers at Russia's Institute of Applied Physics on studies of the contribution of thunderstorms to the global electrical circuit. Our unique database of nearly 200 soundings through many types of thunderstorms is a rich resource for various extended studies in atmospheric physics. For more details on this research program, see the

Radome of the ETH C-band Doppler-radar Visit the Website of the ETH Doppler radar at www.radar.ethz.ch The Radar Meteorology group works with two radars, one of which is mobile. These radars are used to study wind and the different precipitation types in complex orography such as thunderstorms but also weak convective and stratiform rain. The microstructure of solid and liquid precipitation is studied in detail with several different in-situ instruments which are partly developed by the group themselves. An important part of the activities of the group are field experiments. The Group for Experimental Mesoscale Dynamics is headed by Prof. Hans Richner. It investigates primarily wind fields in complex terrain, e.g., in the Alps. Local wind systems (e.g. mountain-valley wind systems) as well as synoptically driven flow (e.g. foehn) are primary targets for observations and analyses. Investigations into smaller scale flow fields are carried out, in particular in view of transport and dispersion of air pollution.
Closely related with this primary topic is the development of new in-situ and remote sensing instrumentation (e.g. wind profiler, radiosondes) and novel analysis tools.

    Atmospheric Physics I: ENV-M563
    Introduction
Atmospheric physics is a cornerstone of the study of the Earth's climate system. This introductory unit will provide an integrated approach to atmospheric physics via links with meteorology, oceanography and atmospheric chemistry.
    Learning objectives
  • Identify the physical processes that govern atmospheric physics
  • Formulate physical and mathematical models of these physical processes
  • Apply these models to find quantitative solutions to atmospheric physics problems, in the fields of meteorology, oceanography, and atmospheric chemistry
  • Analyse and interpret these solutions to environmental problems
  • Design and conduct experiments to test these models and analyse the observed data.
  • Critically assess these physical models using observed data
    Teaching and Learning
A lecture course will introduce the physical concepts and equations of atmospheric physics. Students will be expected to expand on this material through reading of the recommended text books and the research literature. Practical work will involve data analysis and problem solving, and students will work together in group seminars.
    Timetable
10 credits. Taught in first half of Autumn semester, weeks 1-6 (DL slot).

    Introduction
Research is carried out in the area of atmospheric radiative transfer (mainly solar) and remote sensing.
    Radiative Perturbation Theory
One major area of research is the development of radiative perturbation theory as a computational tool in radiative transfer calculations and modelling. Applications include aerosol variability (both loading and optical properties), ozone depletion, photochemistry, clouds (including microphysical and morphological variability) and gaseous absorption spectra.
    Aerosol Optical Properties
A second area of research is the ground based monitoring of atmospheric aerosol optical properties for both climate and visual air quality purposes. This involves the use of automated multispectral radiometers and other monitoring equipment, and the development of advanced inversion algorithms. We plan to cross-correlate the resulting data with other environmental and meteorological data.
    Satellite Remote Sensing
We plan to merge these two research areas into a third area of satellite remote sensing of atmospheric aerosols, and make an active contribution to POLDER on ADEOS, and (later) NASA's EOS Program. (Dr Michael Box is a Principal Investigator on this international project, and Dr Gail Box is a Co-Investigator.)

    Atmospheric Physics and Meteorology
For atmospheric structure studies the main variables are latitude and season. Unfortunately, all three sets of entry measurements will be made at the same time in the martian year, and this time will be determined by celestial mechanics and safety factors. This leaves the selection of latitudes. The wider the latitudinal coverage of the network landing sites, the higher the scientific return on the martian atmospheric structure will be. Ideally, landing sites located 45 of latitude apart would allow to compare pressure, density and temperature profiles in extreme martian atmospheric environments:
    One near-equatorial profile.
    One mid-latitude profile.
One high-latitude profile, preferably in winter hemisphere.
The number of surface stations needed for meteorological investigations ranges from 12 stations for characterization of the CO cycle to over 100 for forecasting purposes. Even a small number of Landers enables an effective exploration of the atmospheric boundary layer and mesoscale phenomena. Each Lander provides also ground truth for Orbiter-based measurements. For the triad of INTERMARSNET stations, the landing site selection criteria for meteorology include, in preferential order:
Maximal latitudinal coverage to enable global studies.

    • To develop general circulation models for understanding the interactive three-dimensional radiative-dynamical-chemical-hydrological structure of the climate system from the surface and troposphere to the upper stratosphere and mesosphere on various time and space scales To employ meteorological observations in conjunction with models for diagnostic analyses of atmospheric processes, and for evaluating and improving parameterizations employed in weather and climate models. To model the interactions between clouds, convection, radiation and large-scale dynamics and understand their roles in climate and climate change.
