(Cited in more than 430 publications through August 1995) Written by F. Sherwood Rowland, department of chemistry, University of California, Irvine, for the Dec. 7, 1987, issue of Current Contents. During 1973, I proposed to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)-which had sponsored my radiochemical research since 1956-that we expand our investigations to trace radioactive isotopes in gas-phase laboratory experiments into an examination of the atmospheric fate of the nearly inert chlorofluoromethanes, which two years earlier had been detected in minute quantities in tropospheric air. The actual investigations began when Mario J. Molina joined my research group as a postdoctoral research associate in 1973. Chlorofluoromethanes are inert under most atmospheric conditions, and we soon deduced that they would survive in the atmosphere for an average of 50 to 150 years before being decomposed by very short wavelength solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This UV radiation normally cannot reach the Earth's surface because it is intercepted by ozone in the stratosphere above it. THE SKY'S THE LIMIT : Atmospheric ozone chemist Sherwood Rowland, alongwith coauthor Mario Molina, was named the 1995 chemistry prize recipient.

What is Atmospheric Chemistry?
Atmospheric Chemistry is the study of the composition of the atmosphere, the sources and fates of gases and particles in air, and changes induced by natural and anthropogenic processes. Although a relatively new field, it has received growing attention since many of the environmental problems of greatest importance involve trace vapors and aerosols. Popular examples are the ozone hole , greenhouse gases and urban air pollution
Atmospheric Chemistry has as its foundation the photochemistry of the molecular constituents of air. However, atmospheric chemists also study the formation and properties of airborne particles, cloud processing of materials, transport and dispersion of chemical tracers, and biogeochemical cycles. In practice, these activities translate into the development of instruments and models for studying the atmosphere, and the application of such tools to answer scientific questions. The atmosphere most easily reveals its secrets to those who are willing to think broadly. Atmospheric chemistry is a truly multidisciplinary field that seeks understanding of the environment through broad thinking.

Welcome to the homepage of the Atmospheric Chemistry Group of the Department of Chemistry, University of Leicester. Our research encompasses the broad issues of tropospheric chemistry, stratospheric chemistry, atmospheric composition and photochemistry. The work is directly related to environmental problems such as air quality issues, photochemical smog formation, acid rain formation, but investigates the scientific basis by making measurements in the field and modelling the resultant data in order to understand on a fundamental level the controlling chemical and physical processes. The research within the Department of Chemistry constitutes part of a wider interest in atmospheric and global geoscience within the Earth Observation Science (EOS) program. Images taken from RAL The atmospheric chemistry research group designs, builds and deploys research instrumentation for studying atmospheric chemistry and analyses, models and interprets the attendant data. Measurements are made from ground-based, aircraft and satellite platforms. Information on these instruments and their results can be found within the Projects section.

Atmospheric chemistry is a young field with vital new discoveries being made at a rapid rate. Our understanding of processes such as air pollution, stratospheric ozone depletion, global biogeochemical cycles, and global climate change is limited by the available observational data and by the number of trained investigators in this area. At the University of Maryland our research has focused on building the data base, using these data to improve numerical simulations, using computer model output to identify definitive measurements - through a balance of experiment and theory we can better understand the atmosphere. Collaboration with scientists from other disciplines helps to expand the range of people and variety of tools available to tackle these intriguing questions. Visit also the Chemistry Dept.

COMMON UNITS OF MEASUREMENT AND THEIR CONVERSIONS
I. Composition of the Atmosphere

The earth's atmosphere is made up of primarily two gases: nitrogen (N ) and oxygen (O ). Together they account for almost 99% of the entire atmosphere. Other trace gases (mostly noble gases, carbon dioxide and water vapor) make up the remainder. The following table shows the composition of the atmosphere near sea level.

II. Variations in the Atmosphere with Altitude
The temperature, pressure and composition of the atmosphere varies with altitude. The variation in temperature is especially complex. Based on this, the atmosphere can be divided into four regions. These are shown in the following figure.

The lowest part of the atmosphere, the troposphere , is commonly referred to as the "lower atmosphere". This is the part of the atmosphere we live in. The temperature of the troposphere decreases going away from the surface of the earth, because the earth's surface absorbs radiation from the sun and heats up the atmosphere adjacent to it. The higher up you go, the colder it gets. Becasue of this, warm air usually rises from lower to higher altitude inside the troposphere.
In contrast, the pressure variation is much simpler to understand. This is primarily due to gravity, which pulls gas particles close to the earth's surface, resulting in a lower density at higher altitudes.
